When Composers Think Instrument Changes are Super Easy Barely an Inconvenience

  • First time doing a "skit" of any kind. I've seen many people ask "how long do you need for an instrument change?" or "Is this [example] enough for this instrument change?"
From a clarinettist's perspective, I tried to illustrate what kinds of things we go through between instrument changes. It's not as simple as picking it up and playing. For clarinets, some people move the mouthpiece between instruments, others both the mouthpiece and the barrel. This way, the reed remains the same so you don't have to deal with that. But still, tuning can be a big ?? and the new instrument won't be warm. A cold clarinet means a flat clarinet!
Similar things can be applied to percussionists moving around, timpanists retuning, any other woodwind doubler, etc.
    Hope you had fun watching!

Which is why it is a very good idea to play the instruments one write for, or at least have some idea of how they work. And thanks for the laugh bud.

Yeah, even just sitting in on orchestral rehearsals to observe can be a great help. Especially with percussion. We just see staves, but they have to walk so much distance to the next instrument and stuff

@@DIDCHOI I see how lucky I am being an improvising musician, but even then it happens I must throw some flutes to reach my accordion before the bass! Studio sessions are the thing. "Now it's that flute part, quick!" "Nah, let's do it tomorrow"

It really comes with too much details… it feels based on experience ;)
