- After years of talking Dodge & SRT Viper with us, friend of the Show & Dodge Viper Chief Engineer for Engines, Dick Winkles opens up his garage to gives us a brief TECH REVIEW of his very American Muscle car collection. He starts with his first ever car he bought and has continuously owned, a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and takes us through the car we recently drove, the 1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV, and culminates with his 2008 Dodge Viper Convertible - one of the Vipers he designed the engine for. Along the way he shares the very unique personal history of each car and then MotoMan comes on camera to share the Engine God’s deep, dark classic car secret . . .

Thank you for this episode Moto Man. Thank you indeed
I'd like that man to know that it is his Viper that started my love affair with cars.
I remember distinctly never caring at all about cars. They were so bland and boxy, or they were the Corvette, which also never caught my attention (Except the opening scene of Heavy Metal, with the Vette re-entering the atmosphere. That was always cool).
Then one day Mr Davis of MotorWeek popped on my TV talking about something called THE VIPER.
I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a super hero car. A space ship. An ultra unattainable thing I had to have.
I was hooked. I read everything ever made available about it.
Watched every show... Yeah, even the series.
Nothing has ever compared to the Viper for me, and nothing ever will.
When it finally comes time for my Viper purchase, it will be a 93-95 RT/10. The top of the mountain.
All the Vipers are a special level of cool and sheer badassery to me... But none of them stack up to the RT.
The pinnacle. The one that started a serious obsession.
I remember seeing Dick drive this car around the town in Davison Michigan. We all loved cars. It was a hot rod town. Now own a WS6 Trans Am.
He is a FOOL for selling that super duty!!!
He already made the most important decision and that was to keep the Camaro.
I own a 77 in the exact same colour and these things are really starting to climb in popularity & value.
In my eyes it’s certainly the best looking of the 3 in this video, but I’m sure many will disagree lol
so amazing!
He done right getting the Hellcat!
Luv the Z28 👍
Of all the cars in the world, it had to be a Super Duty T/A. That is my favorite classic muscle car, so it's very difficult to give an unbiased answer. Not one Super Duty, but two with 4 speed manual?!?
He was right to sell it if he wanted to drive more than detail it I suppose. At the end of the day, he'll have more fun on the track with the Hellcat than the SD.
love helcats but 2 supers in the driveway is a dream come true
Live life with no regrets. That was a great decision!
Give him some space! You're choking the guy! Lol!
I would have kept the Super Duty however you got what you wanted in the Hellcat so good for you! I'm sure you're enjoying it.
If the other Super Duty was a 73 model, I would have kept it. They look much better than the 74 does.
Yes he made the right decision challengers rock!
he made the right decision for him.
The bold graphics on the 74 Z28 were an option. When the customer decided not to purchase the graphics the fenders and rear spoiler received the ‘Z28’ badges. If the bold graphics were purchased the badging was deleted. This car is wearing both which is incorrect.
The 74 Z28 never had a badge or emblem on the rear spoiler. They received a thin foil Z28 decal on the right rear tail panel, placed directly below the Camaro emblem and Z28 fender emblems. This applied when the bold graphics package option was not ordered. Yes, wearing both is incorrect.
Bad decision! You had 2 of them and let them go?!? (Climatic) Noooo!!!
I'd of never sold either super duty till they were at peak market value! Yet I must confess having a hell cat doesn't suck either!
Like Christ Harris and how he sold his GT3RS 4.0, he did it to experience another car...as many cars as possible... if I could I would do the same as a car enthusiast.
Did the engineer said he made modifications to the Viper engine while it was being manufactured at the plant?
i bought a new 74 z28 when i was 17. same thing , before the warranty went out i had new headers, edelbrock intake with a holley 750. the car was loaded. a real lead sled. looking back, i should have left the poor engine alone because it only had 230 hp. i should have just put a 4:11 gear in the rearend and left it at that.
Great story
Do you still live in Flint area? I like your videos and im in Flint.
You're such a cute gay couple at tye beginning, lmao.
the*
No worries on selling the SD's. Life is short and you can't take it with you.
I would have said "Don't touch me dude, you're creeping me out." 😖
I have always thought the vipers engine wasnt that "good" i mean it makes hp because its such a huge engine. 8.4L??? On the current one, Yes it n/a but I'm sure much better engineering could of gone into to it from the beginning. Maybe higher revving less liters and lighter but still making the current hp/tq #'s
Good episode though! Ive always loved the viper! Used to watch the show viper when i was a kid! Used to be my dream car! Because of that show
right decision for him.
Bad decision to sell the SD 74 Pontiac Trans Am 455! Should have kept one.
Anyone out there who doesn't know about 1973-74 T/A SD need to take 30 minutes, & go research it ASAP! Keep in mind from 1972 all the way until the 1986-87 Buick GNX the 73-74 T/A SD were the only TRUE BONE STOCK 13sec 1/4 mile cars sold in America..I think he made a huge mistake by selling it "just to go buy a hellcat"..Hell, are you telling me that Ralph Gilles, or someone at SRT couldn't just give him a hellcat?
you sold the sd 455!!!
Should've kept the Trans Am
He made the right decision
For that we want to see the hellcat
well he does have the 2nd one right?
Everything has a price...I.m sure the person that bought the SD455 paid dearly for it! Cash in the bank and a drivable car that's fun and not a trailer queen...great decision!
I would have sold the '74 and bought a '72 SD.
There wasn't a 72 SD. The 455 SD was an option in 73 and 74 with a rumored very few making it into early 75 models.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO... how could you, Love that Goat though...
Never sell an appreciating asset to finance a depreciating one......especially a Chrysler....ugh....
"You Are Not Getting 455 Anything" bahahahahahahaha, growing back in 2000 when I was kid, I told my father I wanted a Lumina SS & he told me "You Are Not Getting SS Anything" so I can relate with that one lol
Cccccccmmmmmooooonnn!! I was looking forward to the infamous Hellcat & kitchen …. Can you at least tell us what color is it?
That's a quite collection & I hope I can have something similar in the future….
I have to agree with you, outside of the Challenger, Chrysler's designs were meh … especially 71 models & after.
I really wanna be upset & call Dick wrong for selling the SD, but I have to give him a pass because he is the Viper's father.
As you always say: it's not just the car, it's the story behind it (paraphrasing of course). And as Dick showed here with the GTO & the Z28
are you guys going to review batman v superman?
What was behind the viper? looks like a acr.
+Ducksauce Good eye! So Dick is never one to sit around and go play golf . . . He does some work for Arrow Racing engines and that white Viper you see behind his car is his engineering test car - basically, they have the guy who designed the engine from Chrysler originally working on modifications to said engine - really doesn't get much better than that . . . and, I can say, it sounds INCREDIBLE!!!!
+MotoManTV That is cool! You going to do any videos on that story? These videos featuring the guys by the scene are awesome.
+Ducksauce No, as you may have seen in other episodes, we no longer feature cars from FCA Auburn Hills on the show. For the full logic behind our decision, have a look at the comments here: ruclips.net/video/Rh-z-0aeEhg/видео.html
700HP thats all that needs to be said about his answer. lets just hope he got all the options available lol. side note these retro reviews and the stories.
Yeah why not. You only live once. It was the right decision. 'tis better to love and lost then never to have loved at all.
IMO, I think it may have been better to keep at least one of the T/A SD, considering the rarity and that he had 2 four speed cars...but in his defense he got to recapture that joy but he moved on, sometimes when you buy that car from your youth you just have to get it out of your system.
MM, being a Pontiac guy, I'd say it was a mistake. But, I would love to drive a Hellcat, just once v
I would have bought a '69 sYc Camaro, or a '70 LS6 Chevelle with the $ from the SD455.
super duty > hellcat
As much as I am surprised that he sold, not one, but two! SD-455s, it sounds like he did it with good intentions??? He wasn't going to drive them, so hopefully their new owners actually get some use out of them.
That said, swapping a T/A for a Challenger or a Viper? What the hell? LOL
Shouldn't have sold either SD455. That was just a misinformed decision. But too late now. Or is it?
Life is about...No regrets. It's okay to move on from the Super Duty.
Don't believe they came with both stripes and decals. so probably its not a original d88 stripe car. check mine out.
should have kept the super duty
I would have kept all cars just find a way to finance the other two dodge's. the one with the most toys wins.
Let's hear them run at least.
Should have never sold the Super Duty 455 super rare car you should go buy it back
Dude at the beginning looks so uncomfortable about how his hand is grabbing his shoulder...
Heck no, should have kept the SD!!!!
FOR A HELLCAT?!?!
Hell no it's not a good decision. That's like selling a first generation Macintosh to buy a gaudy Alienware monstrosity.
that was really a bad decision in my opinion.... i dont think he needed the money to get the chally why he did that
should have kept the ta. hell cats are nothing great. #team chevy
Wrong decision. Hellcat shmellcat.
bad decision, but his to make.....
Sold an SD for a Fangs? wtf. I'm a straight up Viper guy, but metal is abit more satisfying. Not all about hp. Of course an SD455 '74-'76 Trans Am will go for 30-40k perfect cars, but wtf. Hellcat is a handicap for the new generation. What adult buys a hellcat?
Trans Am SDs are going for WAYYYY more than that . . . I believe that's why he sold it:(
MotoManTV Could've been a gift. Who knows. :/
Just sell one at the most
why didnt he just buy the hellcat and keep the super duty. im sure he got the hellcat super cheap
Hey if he's not that into it anymore why not let someone else enjoy it. Also if no one buys new muscle cars they'll stop making them.
So more Pontiacs on the market and more Hellcats.. Why am I supposed to be disappointed?
U should have just sold one
wrong decision...
What about the GTO 1970? Not much story telling about it? Must be the best of tbem all, even the egine must be nothing to improve on?😆
Great cars and enjoy your collection.
Rgds

From Sweden
nope sorry
You made a big mistake the Trans Am is a lot nicer than a hellcat are at whatever it’s called Kaiser I hate Chrysler dodge the worst ever ever made I love Camaro Z 28 out of 70 6974 I had up to 369Z 2870 brand new 70 I paid 4400 for it brand new I loved it but I had to stop because I have to have surgery
These cars fit this nerds. Weak!
Terrible foolishness decision
