UPDATE: One thing I didn't realize is that if you have DuckDNS set up, it can do the Let's Encrypt set up for you. So if you are using DuckDNS you can skip the Let's Encrypt section IF you fill out the Let's Encrypt parameters in the configuration. If you want to handle Let's Encrypt separately, then you can install that add-on. Sorry for the confusion!!

@@ThisSmartHouse In India there aren't any reputed brands that provide zigbee/wifi devices at competitive prices. I've decided to go for Sonoff Zigbee bridge and the sensors they provide, and integrate them with Alexa. Although you have some really helpful videos on HomeAssistant but, I don't feel going that deep right now😅
If possible, can you make a video/share your views on how to integrate sonoff Zigbee devices and sonoff Zigbee bridge with Alexa and setting up routines.

Great video, thank you. We just bought a new house and move in next month. Planning to use this guide to help me dive into the world of Home Automation. One question: Does HA support a 128-bit Raspeberry Pi? I can't find info anywhere and am hoping to discover before purchase.
Always fun to dive into automation. It will hurt the wallet though. Which Pi are you talking about? Do you mean a 64 bit OS?
Thank alot for grreat videa. I just have general question, do we need raspberry pi to be connected to the internet to make Home Assitant running? Becasue I need to set a home Assitant instance for an environment in which we couldn't have internet connection for the raspberry pi (we can have a closed network) because of the security issues. So I was wondering if I can intilize it first, perhaps at my home, and then take the raspberry pi to the desired place with no internet connection and make Home Assistant running?
That is a good question. Home Assistant (the core components and most of the add-ons) operate 100% without internet. Of course if you have something cloud based, it requires the internet. You could absolutely build it at home and take it somewhere else.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I've gotten better with better equipment over the last year. I find when I watch a lot of RUclipsrs it's hard to normalize audio across all of your clips.
Great video. However, there are a couple bits that I am missing, so here are my dumb questions:
1) I read your comments below and used the Raspberry Pi Flash as it put HA on straight away, and I read the link to the wifi set up as well. This is when I realised that from my Windows 10 File Explorer on a Microsoft Surface I could not see the hasso folder on the flashed SD card, in my D: drive. In fact it says the D drive is empty.
I am using a Samsung 64GB SD card, and I have reformated it, but this was showing only 0.99MB being reformated. I managed to see that the SD is partitioned and it has hasso directory but I cant access it (this might be from when I tried doing this back in May unsuccessfully).
Havent been able to figure out how to reformat the whole SD card to start again. I have connected the Pi 4 to a monitor with power just to see if there is any activity and none.
I am on the verge of going out and buying another 64GB SD card, if I cant do a complete reformat.
2) I am going to try the wifi route.
However I could try the ethernet cable route. So here is the second dumb question:
a) I am connecting the Pi4 to the router directly or to the computer that I used to flash the SD? [Slight problem with the Surface is that is wifi only, but I have a Pi400 next to me which I could connect to the ethernet connection there]
b) If as I assume it needs to be connected to the router located a few metres away in the Utility cupboard (I have ten metres of ethernet cable for this brought previously). My router has the following ethernet connections - 3 marked as gig ethernet and 1 marked as WAN. So which one do I use?
c) I can ultimately but the Pi4 next to the router in utility cupboard with a cable connection.
3) I have Hershel Infrared heating panels I want to connect plus bluetooth electric towel rails.

There are no dumb questions!
1a. When you open the Raspberry Pi flasher you can hold down ALT+SHIFT+x to bring up the advanced menu. You can define your wifi network there.
1b. This is because only the boot partition is readable by windows. You need to open the Disk Management on windows and delete all of the partitions. Then you should be able to reflash. Or you can find some free tools that can read Linux partitions.
2. You need to connect the pi directly to the router, not the PC. Then it will get an IP address . If you can't find it on your network you can connect an HDMi cable to it and it should display the IP address. You can also go to home assistant.local
3. I am not familiar with those. Did you find a Home Assistant integration for them?

Yes, you can. You need to store it somewhere accessible (either in your www directory or host online). Then you can use the service media_player.play_media to play the file over your Google Minis. You can do this in a script or automation.

It looks like it isn't supported when using Home Assistant (Hassio or Hassos). But I found this set of instructions that you might want to test out: gist.github.com/enegaard/a57af286205914bd912270c89650fb1b
I haven't tested it (I don't have a pi camera). But let me know if it works.
GREAT presentation and content. I am new to HA and just installed 2022-12 on a NUC. The SUPERVISOR and CONFIGURATIONS options are NOT in the SIDEBAR! How do I fix this? Thanks David
Hi David! Glad you enjoyed the video. This was made on an older version of HA and they moved the menus. Everything is under the settings Menu. I think the supervisor stuff is under the system.

I am just getting into this - I liked your video - is there any way to have a wall unit in my house - Which pulls together all my connections - ie see the weather forecast, Sonos speakers I can control, lights, door locks, cameras, Wemo plugs - I love the idea of pulling everything together but feel like I am missing something - i see you can do it all on your computer but is there a way to get a wall mounted touchscreen and control everything? Like an iPad but specific to this stuff ?
I have two Amazon Fire tablets in my house that run an app called Fully Kiosk Browser. Those load my Home Assistant webpage and wakes the tablet up when someone walks by.
Just a note that the piflasher make this all even easier. Home Assistant I’m on it under other. It also does the boot order change for SSD in just seconds.

@@headerahelix you simply download the piflasher program and run it, it lets you choose your operating system, including but not limited to home assistant, and then it installs it. Also, if you want to boot your raspberry pi 4 onto a SSD, it will also modify your booting in like 2 seconds.
Hello, I installed a clean image on mg Pi4b, with Pi4b 64 bit image. On my first boot (and on following boots) I am getting "[WARN] Home Assistant CLI not starting! Jump into emergency console". I made some internet search which points out that the pi may not be getting an IP or insufficient power support. I am using original Pi power unit and I see that pi has an IP on DHCP. Do you have any suggestions?
Flash the SD again. If that doesn't work maybe different SD card?

You might want look at installing the supervised docker version of home assistant. Then you would still have access to the base Pi OS. I think I showed how to do this in my Raspad and Home Assistant video.

Just go to: Supervisor (it is a tab on your left toolbar), System tab, under the Host section click *Change* next to your current IP address. When you get the _Network Settings_ pop up, click on *WLAN0*. Then at the bottom is a toggle you can click on *Wifi*, press *Scan for Access Points*. Then select your Wi-Fi AP and set up the security.

Can you run the system completely locally or does the system require a persistent Internet connection? I would not want anything able to send any of my data anywhere.
Home assistant can be ran 100% locally. But some of the devices that you integrate with it might require internet connection. But there are a ton of local only options available for things like switches, plugs, etc.
Is it a safe assumption that any device I have that works with Alexa will work with this? I’m wanting to build a control panel using a fire tablet.
Not everything but I would assume most things would work. I usually just Google "product home assistant integration" to see if someone has made it work.
Do you have a video for absolute beginners? I can install software. What I need to know is what sort of hardware I need to set up a smart home. I know I need a computer to run the Home Assistant OS. Great. What then? How does that computer communicate with my lights? How does it communicate with the doorbell? Do I need a hub of some sort? And if I do, what hub can I get that will work with Home Assistant locally -- without any use of the cloud?

I am not sure. The pi can only boot off of certain adapter chips.

May I know should I install let’s encrypt? I can now access my HA server with HTTPS using only Duckdns add ons, why? Am I doing something wrong??
I do think that DuckDNS recently added Let's Encrypt to the Add-on. So you are correct, you do not need Let's Encrypt in addition to DuckDNS. When I started making the video last year, you had to have both. You should be good to go!!!!

Did all steps up to download but once I put it in the raspberry pi nothing happened. Don’t see that screen you brought up, just at the generic screen
Probably means a bad flash. I would try it again or maybe use the official raspberry pi Flasher.
When I install the sod in into the raspberry I, after boot up I am left at a command line prompt. What do I do next.
You might try a reflash. It sounds like some files are missing.
I get to thr log on screen either through Windows file explorer, or the DuckDNS, but there log in credentials I use do not work. I se when you typed homeassistant / homeassistant that it did not log in either, but did with a different password (at about 20 minutes). What should be used here?
Are you having issues with the login to Home Assistant or via file explorer?
Ok now I see what you are asking (at 20 minutes in the video). You need to define your username and password in the SAMBA plug in. If you go to Supervisor > Samba > Configuration (at the top). In there you will see the config for username and password. Let me know if that does / doesn't fix it.

Now it uses the new Lovelace interface so the dashboard will look different. If you go to settings > devices & services > integrations. You should be able to add it there if it isn't already.
Ok, I set up the letsencrypt when I put the url from duckdns into my browser it takes me to my gateway. Is that correct or did I mess up something like the port forward??
You have the port forwarding going to the wrong IP address. You need to have the port (443) forward to 8123 on your Home Assistant IP address.

And do you not enable "start addon at system boot"? I got a bit lost on the bit you couldn't show us as you had it already set, but got there in the end lol. I used an old 3b to practice on, If I like it all, and I do so far lol, I'll get a pi4 8gb. Already having this old pi which used to be used for a 3d printer it's already forwarded I noticed.. so it's a handy practice run. I'm coming over from smartthings. :) liked and subbed :)
I think the letsencrypt is only called when needed, I don't think it "runs" like a regular add-on. Thanks for the like and sub!! And welcome to the family. You will find a lot more you can do with Home Assistant. Let me know if there is a topic you want covered.
hi there, I'm new to Home assistant and raspberry pi. I managed to complete the steps to install HA OS into my SD card and plug it into my raspberry pi. currently my raspberry pi is saying " waiting for supervisor to startup..." and I could not log into the provided HA URL to proceed with the onboarding. Did I miss anything somewhere?
How long did you wait? It could take up to 20 minutes. If it still doesn't work, reflash the SD. A file could have been missed.
@@ThisSmartHouse i have reflash the SD and it is still the same. my pi has complete running and show HA command line page but I do notice that the "Kernel time synchronize" was mark as fail when my pi is running. not sure if this has any impact. i have tried inputting the HA URL provided from my pi and also my pi's ip address:8123 but it is still not working (site cannot be reached; DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN) and could not proceed with onboarding step
Maybe try flashing the SD card with the official raspberry pi Flasher (there is an option for home assistant).
I installed belena Etcher for Windows as described (I have used it several times in the past without problems). used URL option, pasted RPI github link (hassio/install gives you the link, not like in your video), selected my 32GB SD drove and Flash! I always get an ECONNRESET error. I tried another SD card, same result. Any suggestions?
Yeah they URL option wasn't available back when I recorded this video. Are you seeing this when connecting to the Pi via HDMI? Or are you trying to SSH in?
@@ThisSmartHouse I am running etcher on my Windows 10 laptop with the SD card plugged into my laptop UBS connector. So no HDMI, SSH nor DuckDNS.
Quick question should the SD card be empty? Currently I have the PI os on it and whenever I flash it, it will not work and say flash failed?
I should also say I tried another SD card that is empty and it said the same thing.
The flashing tool should partition and format the card, deleting everything on it. Which tool are you using to flash the SD?
@@ThisSmartHouse so I ended up cleaning everything off my sd card and reformat it. Ran Etcher like you did in the video and it said flash failed. Tried it again, rebooted computer took out SD card nothing flash still failed. Got a brand new SD card and ran it, flash failed again. I went back to my old SD card, cleared it one more time flash failed again. However I noticed there are always files on it. Since the flash doesn't work until the end, anyway I just proceeded to use the rest of the steps as if flash was successful and now it works. SO not sure why it was not saying successful? Bottom line is I got it working, next stop is automation.
Hmmm that is weird. I have shifted over to using the Raspberry Pi Flasher now, which seems to work well.
Great vid, but darn! I followed and installed the first 2 addons. Then when port forward I realized that I already have my business website on 80. Is there a way to have it on anything else than 80, without using the dns challange?
Never mind! I realized that I just can of course add the port to the url :p
You can also try using nginx proxy manager. I use that now in forward all SSL traffic based on the hostname of the domain you're trying to visit.

Well MQTT isn't required for Home Assistant. What are you struggling with on MQTT. I would be happy to make a video. I use it mainly for Zigbee2Mqtt and some other devices.
@This Smart House Thanks for the reply. I recently got my home assistant server running on a pi 4 and I did manage to get 2 d1 minis enrolled through MQTT. One is a light switch. One will be a heat only thermostat. Both running tasmota.
Most of the hassio tutorial videos I've watched on youtube assume you're using or already familiar with MQTT.
One video topic I'd be very interested in would be an exploration of if you need MQTT. What are the pros and cons, etc. That could be a great video for noobs like me.

im stuck at letsencrypt. im using mac ios and the terminal not giving me the same prompt. what am i typing wrong?
Did you see my note about not needing LetsEncrypt if you are using DuckDNS? What prompt are you getting?
@@ThisSmartHouse nope. I didn't. I did the https// domain name .duckdns.org and it said my internet wasn't secured so thay kinda got me worried. Thinking I messed something up. I'm a noob at computers so skipping some steps screwed me.
Make sure you set up the duckdns add on. It will request take care of the ssl cert for you. You might just remove the let's encrypt add on and start with duckdns.
Can home security systems be controlled by Home Assistant?
Depending on your panel, yes. There are a variety of options out there.
I'm sorry but I still didn't understand it. Can you please walk me through with baby steps as I'm not tech savvy as you are 😅 so that board sends signals or something trough Bluetooth or infrared? Whats the rang ?
This is just the "brain" of your smart home. You still need to connect your devices via bridge of some sort (ZigBee/Zwave Stick, etc). What devices are you wanting to connect?
How you connect raspberry to laptop? Wifi?
Typically you just flash the micro SD card on your computer then connecting it to the Pi. Then the Pi gets connected to the network with Ethernet or WiFi.
How does the Rasberry Pi find your smart devices? I'm super green and struggling to understand this.
It depends on what type of smart devices you are working with. If they are WiFi and Home Assistant is on the same network, then it should be able to find them in the integrations tab. If they are using a different technology (Zigbee, Z-Wave, etc), you will need a hub or a stick to communicate with them. Some 3rd party hubs (like Philips Hue) can be connected to HA over your network, others can't.
What type of devices are you wanting to connect?
@@ThisSmartHouse firstly, thanks you so much for this, i've really been struggling to get my head around it. Initially it'll be smart light switches (lutron) and my heating system via nest thermostats linked to a heatmiser hub. I also want to integrate a security camera system, smart washing machine, smart speakers (sonos) and link directly to my spotify. Then blinds, intercom and gate entry system as a start then build up from ther. I also would like to have a dashboard and tablet setup. I'm going to start small and try install the system and will buy some hue lightbulbs to start and use my existing smart speakers.

So I actually have used MySensors in the past. But I have moved those sensors into ESP8266 and ESP32s using ESPHome. I haven't checked out the MySensors project in a while, but it was foundational for these new projects. What are you using the NRF24 integration for?
Confused why everybody recommends 32+GB cards when HA is only 200mb? I can’t imagine the database would even come close to filling a 16GB
You also have to factor in all the other things. Like add-ons and integrations that take up space. Plus people like to be able to store custom image files on their SD card.
Databases can grow really fast depending on the size of your networks.
I'm unable to ping my hassio.local. Am I doing something wrong?
Try homeassistant.local. I think they updated it over a year ago.

I don’t understand why we can’t install home assistant directly on a smartphone. All of us have many old smartphones that take dust and would be powerful enough to run home assistant…
That is a good idea. I did find an article where someone installed home assistant on an old Nexus 7. community.home-assistant.io/t/home-assistant-core-on-android-tablet/250174
Now this is only home assistant core, so you don't get the supervisor and add-ons.
But frankly the raspberry pis are so cheap, you will get up and running faster with a more powerful version of HA.
How you get the IP address of the pi and the wifi credentials?
If you have a monitor connected, it will display in the terminal. If not, you can open terminal / command prompt on your PC and type "ping homeassistant.local" that should find you the IP address. The last place to check would be your router or firewall's DHCP table. This all assumes you are connected via Ethernet.
Setting up directly to WiFi is a bit more difficult, you can follow the method outlined here: pimylifeup.com/home-assistant-raspberry-pi/

Raspberry pie or a mini PC for home assistant?
That is a big question! I am running my whole house on a Pi 4 8GB w/ SSD. I have had no issue with speed. But a mini PC is probably overkill if you are just dedicating it for HA.
Pi is easier to set up and quicker to get started. The mini PC will be more powerful, but you will only really need this if you are going to be doing something like Frigate for video processing.
I would say start with the Pi and if you come to a point where there is a need for more power or a different processor, then move to a mini PC. You can always back up your config and transfer it over. BUT, if you go with a mini PC, I would recommend using it for more than just HA. I have an Intel NUC that runs my file server, Plex server, drone mapping software, logging server and my HA test environment.

Well i just wasted a whole night trying to get it to run,
tried forums, online, docs, chat gpt,
multiple issues but the big one now is it seems it wants ethernet, I can't boot using wifi, why not, why isnt this a choice.
All this just to turn alight on and off.
Where are you stuck? Once you get into Home Assistant, you should be able to set it up offline. Then go into settings and add the Wi-Fi information.
The 192 subnet is class C and not class B
You aren't the only one who commented. I use multiple VLANs so that is where the confusion came in.
It's not as straightforward as suggested here. I'm pretty savvy about tech. I program in 3 languages and have done so for many decades. I thought this would be easy. I have a Raspberry Pi 4 and 32GB MicroSD card. I followed all the instructions and nothing worked. There are too many "missing" steps from start to finish. Too many assumptions about installing all these files, OS systems, how to set up the parameters, software to use, etc. I'd love to have a detailed step-by-step instruction guide. I'd make one myself but can't get any of this stuff to work like they say. On top of this video, I've watched at least a dozen "walk-through" videos and none have had all the information. Some are so out of date that the links to the programs and products don't even exist anymore.
What step are you stuck on. I know somethings have changed due to updates to the application and process. I have had a number of beginners who have followed the guide without issue. Let me know where you are stuck.

Hi there, i have completed the Flash part and installed the SD card into the Raspberry PI, i have connected it up to the ethernet and power and left it for 20 mins, however when i try homeassistant.local:8123 is cannot seem to get any connection. any suggestions. Any ireland home assistant beginner
Do you see anything new on your firewall/router? Have you connected a monitor to see what comes up on screen? You might want to flash the SD again, sometimes it fails the first time.
192.168.x is class C btw
