First mission of the New Year at my favorite zone. This was during the 5th Annual Maui Sporting Goods Jigging Tournament. I didn't enter but I'm definatly entering next year. I'm starting to really like jigging.
I launched around 4am. Right away I caught one Menpachi (Soldier Fish) and a huge Akule (Bigeye Scad) I hooked up to something on a dead Opelu but whatever it was, bumped into my kayak and spit the hook.
Right around sunrise I caught about 20 Opelu (Mackerel Scad) This is my absolute favorite bait to use. Choke bait on the day where everyone was jigging Haha!
I caught a good size Nabeta (Peacock/Razor Wrasse) using Ono belly as bait.
I caught a small Uku (Blue-Green Snapper / Green Jobfish) on my Fluorocarbon Leader to Single Circle Hook with a 4oz Egg Lead to drop it down. Uku is in my top 5 favorite fish to eat. It makes the best sashimi. Especially the smaller ones.
On the way in I hooked up to a massive Kahala (Amberjack) At first I thought it was a Shibi (Ahi - Yellowfin Tuna) because that first initial run was intense. Then it started to feel more like a shark. After about a 30 minute fight I noticed it got extremely light at the surface. Then I saw a cloud of blood and knew then that the "Tax Collector" took her share. She bit about a third of the fish clean off. I was surprised because the shark was only 4 feet long. The Kahala was almost as big as her.
The weather stayed nice the whole day. Everyone caught fish to bring to the weigh-ins. Solid session to start the New Year!
