Hey Guys. Your fridge can be off all night without losing very much temperature at all. I have my fridge in my tiny house on a timer. It switches off at midnight and switches back on at 07h00. I make sure not to open it during that time. This is especially true if your fridge has a freezer compartment INSIDE the fridge. So install a switch and get into the habit of switching it off when you switch off the lights before bed.

    • @KiwisFlyTheCoop
      @KiwisFlyTheCoop 2 года назад +4

We agree about switching the fridge off overnight especially in winter (so long as you don’t open it). We have similar solar set up and inverter and in the South Island in NZ, we probably have the similar winter temps. Makes a huge difference in overnight power consumption.

    • @nicolae6173

I agree, I generally turn the fridge off overnight unless it’s really warm. I don’t enjoy trying to sleep with the noise the fridge makes!

You can get quiet generators that you can run for a couple of hours in the day that will be much more efficient than driving as you have to cover the cost of the fuel used during this time moving the van.

When we go in the van in winter we switch the fridge off at night and don't open the door it is fine and every three days we go on a site for hook up and empty
the casette as well . we are not full timers like yourselves but we go out all the year round . Love watching you both as you are so down to earth and love the tours .

I just watched this with my lithium battery currently on 18%! 😂
I’m stationary at the moment and don’t have the option of charging from running the truck so I’m just about to disconnect it and take it for a ride in the car to charge it up on mains power at my parents house. 😉
Also I switched my compressor fridge off around Autumn Equinox and don’t expect to turn it back on again until Spring Equinox, it just serves as a cool box staying cool from cold things I put in there in the winter. I also don’t have a diesel heater, I heat my home with a woodburner which obviously requires no electricity and don’t have any hair products etc. I use candles in lanterns and fairy lights with AA batteries. The only things I use the power for at this time of year are charging up our phones, tablets and headphones.
Only 3.5 weeks until Winter Solstice and the hours of sunlight will begin to increase again! ☀️🙌🏻

We had the same problem as we are always Out travelling, and always try to wild park first.
We have got solar, and one leisure battery, but as you said the solar, is not reliable in the winter time, but now, we are no longer dependant on Solar. We have 60 amp battery to battery charger, installed in our van , which charges the battery in a hour when engine is running.
We have just come back from the New Forest, we stayed a week there trees everywhere , no hook up just using this set up . We went for the odd drive.
It has been a game changer for us .
Just thought we would share that with you.great video both.
    Enjoy your travels.

The separate power bank will be really useful. I got a small generator, But you cant use that outside peoples houses and that doesn't mean you get a good charge quick enough . I always thought why have a power bank. Why not just get more batteries, But of course its not that simple, Never is. Understanding batteries and charging is a lot more complex than i ever realized. Thanx guys for getting cold, cramped and doing without So some of us can learn best from you. 👍👍

power bank is definately the way to go, and it really helps in winter with lack of solar etc. i think a max of two days in one place is good practice if wild camping with a decent drive to let the alternator do its thing. unfortunately the traveling is not the cheapest option with the price of diesel at the moment, but it is better for the mind and soul to move on and explore.

I've been full timing for six years and have 620 watts of solar and 360ah lithium. I bought a 90 amp charger (charges at about 60-70 after 20 mins) from the alternator but have to drive nonetheless for 4 hours or more for just 2-3 days. Bought a generator, but you can only use it far away from people. Soundproofing with them is very limited because the exhaust has to remain unrestricted. Good luck to you both. Enjoying your videos!

Good luck with camping at sites throughout the winter, most campsites were closed for the winter season between Dec and March (well in lreland) and ones I did find open, I was the only one in! I did the one day a week thing, and stealth camped in church carparks(church is sanctuary) and beaches by camps. And yes supermarket carparks but never more than a night, but I'd camp in middle of carpark to get most daylight in solar. Hope that helps!

I would increase solar, you must be using massive power.
You can't beat a generator, used one when off grid , will give you 240v and charge your batteries.
I may seem odd but will not use a power bank as you still have to charge them. Have been ful timing for years, and now turning to more solar and lithium .

We don't have massive solar issues in Africa, however what you should look into is upgrading your alternator to allow fast charging whilst you drive.

The limit is from the battery-to-battery charger not the alternator. It's worth taking advice on whether a 2nd unit can be fitted.

@@alanhat5252 thought the concept of DC to DC is that once your starter battery is charged(14v) then the alternator charge changes over to the house battery(maybe that's a smart charger)... Something to investigate.

I used to have a Hymer Swing, I found a must for me parking up on grass sites were off road waffle boards to inch onto either the front or rear wheel drive. Most camp sites of course will have a vehicle to pull you off in such an event. But for private cheap camping I found them useful on many occasions as you can gain the momentum to get you moving. Some can be quite light so they don't increase the pay load to much. Great video as always guy's :o)

Hello to both of you I've just bought two large solar panels from a chap that had leftover from fitting on his house the panels on your van look the same are they the 44volts about 10amp tilting mine into the sun just testing them was disappointing they were only producing 2 amps each at this time of the year about 40volts.

🤣 I was chuckling away to myself when you were both sat in the Love Brownies store in Windsor... Where Liam was informing viewers that it was going to cost £15 per night with an extra £3 for an electrical hookup totaling £18.00... Then when you both realised that you only had twelve minutes left to get back to Morgan and leave... Otherwise you were going to receive a £15 fine for your car park overstay... The mad dash to beat the clock was so funny... 🤣 You should have sped up the footage with the Benny Hill music playing in the background... 🤣 If you hadn't gotten back to Morgan in time... Both the fine and the cost of the two Hot Chocolate drinks you'd had... Would've cost you way more than the price charged for the campsites £15 per night stay with the extra £3 for the electrical hookup too... It would probably have been way less stressful as well... If you had returned to Morgan first... You could've covered about half the price of the campsites cost... Simply by making yourselves a Hot Chocolate drink back in Morgan instead. 👌☕ But i do understand that you were just giving yourselves a little treat though... 👍 All the best guys... Cheers. 🍺

It's Cold , turn the fridge off and or buy non fridge food , root veg don't need a fridge for example, the Jackery will be a usefull addition but it's just another battery in a box with an invertor built in the charging will have to come from what ever supply you have, car , mains, solar so not much change .

I dont recall whether you have 1 B2B charger or 2? If you only have 1, then adding a second victron orion would be the best thing you could do and really not that expensive. It will double your engine run charging from 30A to 60A. At the end of the day, power banks, and leisure battieries can only give you the power that they have stored up. You need to equip the van with the means to give you that charge on the worst case scenario (ie, UK winter). Personally if you want to use a power bank, then I would keep it charged and only use it in circumstances when you need to. The rest of the time you just need to manage your power usage. One thing we did, was to fit a remote switch to the inverter. Its easy to leave it on even when you are not using it, but you are probably looking at 20A per day just in idle!
    cheers Ed

@@ThoseHappyDays I honestly can't think of a van we have built over the past year where we haven't fitted 2. You may need to run a bit of extra cable from the main battery, but otherwise it's the easiest fix for you. An hour's drive is then going to give you around 60amps charge.

Great video. Interesting about the jackets but don’t forget that using it to charge your laptops is essentially using it’s built in inverter. You may as well just get more lithium batteries for your main energy storage. Of course it does depend on how efficient your inverter is. And also, you can get DC-powered laptop chargers. They normally run off a cigarette lighter and will overall use less energy than converting to 240v with an inverter and down again.

Hi, just a thought...you mentioned the fridge/freezer so please consider this...its winter, your freezer storage capacity us small as compared to power used (24/7). Your fridge temp is probably not far from external temperatures...so here is an idea...for the duration of deep winter months....turn the fridge off completely. Use it as a big insulated cool box.
Just an idea. Love you both dearly. ROD UK
