This is the best explanation of XR I've ever seen, and encourages me to continue my activism. Thank you Bristol University.

Thank you for this well produced and thought provoking film. I think it should be more widely viewed. Agree or disagree that non-violent civil disobedience is justified in tackling climate change, we need more people to be aware of the arguments and reasons for it, and its historical context.

We should be using this in our XR talks instead of the section on civil disobedience. Excellent.

Do you have a similarly well-produced video from this year too? Thank you for this - it was really great. SO many good videos and so little airplay for them outside of our own networks, most of whom are already dwelling somewhere on the scale of concerned, alarmed, terrified and unfortunately, overwhelmed. Look after yourselves

When philosophers discuss justified civil disobedience then it involves breaking the law which is held to be unjust. So, for instance, not paying the poll tax because the poll tax is viewed by the protesters as unjust. Or a woman not wearing a hijab in public whilst resident in a country where it is illegal for a woman to not wear a hijab in public.
What Extinction Rebellion are generally doing is qualitatively different. They are, for instance, breaking traffic laws even though they are not claiming that the traffic law - eg forbidding sitting down in the middle of the road - should be repealed. They are simply breaking the law to gain attention.

They are following in the noble footsteps of global change makers such as the suffragettes who broke windows and caused disruption for the sake drawing attention to an issue. Someone who lives next to waterloo Bridge ventured over to talk to some of us. He said he was really angry at the disruption we caused, and then after a few days began to notice how peaceful it was without the constant traffic, He then thought about what we were doing, and what the climate emergency actually means so he decided to come over to join us for a few hours.

Well there seems much to support in this video but why then do I have a hesitation over the colourful actions of Extinction Rebellion? Perhaps its my feeling that for many in XR it is a game, a way of being attached to an anti-establishment action group. We have to take global warming, biodiversity loss, and the destruction of the environment and nature seriously. For too long the human being has put itself first rather than the wellbeing of everybody on the planet. Is it a failure of the human mind that has lead us so close the cliff edge with its 'me' first attitude? Its not about getting everybody to do what you want them to do its about understanding ourselves and finding out what it is in each one of us that drives us to want everybody else to do what we want.

Mate, as an older XR member (50), I can promise you that NOBODY in XR thinks its a game. Every member, young & old, takes it VERY seriously. We still have fun rebelling though - a sense of humour is essential, otherwise it's all too depressing.
