I'm surprised josh didn't comment on the hidden tutorial in the beginning of the game. He has said he likes it when tutorials are done in an authentic way that doesn't take you out of the game, and FNV has probably the most authentic one there is. The game literally teaches you every important mechanic in that first quest line. How your skills affect dialogue, faction reputation, different ways of doing quests, how to craft, how to scavenge, how to lockpick, how to hack, that choices have consequences, all these things and you don't even know you are being taught that the rest of the game will use these same mechanics in varying ways.

Just wanted to say how much I've been enjoying these vods lately, especially this stream and the Morrowind playthrough (although I'm still making my way through that one). Cozy, relaxed vibes with some silly jokes that become familiar friends throughout the stream, some groan worthy puns and one liners (a mark of true pun quality) and just an all round nice time to be had. I only found this channel fairly recently despite being an occasional watcher of the JS plays channel for a while and it's been an absolute delight to watch you experience New Vegas for the first time (even with your rather unconventional approach to leveling - I'm just glad you're enjoying it).
I agree. I love fallout 3 and New Vegas equally. Is it just me or do the xbox360 era graphics suit the game way more than the newer fallout 4 graphics? I find it way more immersive for some reason.
What josh missed (and so do most players me included the first time) is that every quest usually has between 2 and 4 ways to solve it. You can succeed the primm sheriff quest by either getting the pardon for Meyers, convincing NCR to take over the place or hacking a robot to act as a law enforcer.

25:45 I know this is almost 2 months old now but there is literally no better game for going like "Oh hey its *that* guy!" than New Vegas. it has a wonderfully eclectic voice cast of B-C list actors that knock their roles out of the park
A lot of them are A list too! Like Yuri Lowenthal. He does loads of the miscellaneous male character voices (including the grunts of the male Courier and the voice of Oliver Swanick), and nowadays he's the voice of Spider-Man in the new Insomniac games! He was also the original voice of Ben 10.
I know it might seem like "you shouldn't use mods the first time you play the game". But 1) Viva New Vegas compilation is genuinely important for fixing issues with stability of the game, and bugs that you might encounter in it. And 2) if you really do feel like "DLC items make you overpowered for the start of the game" (which i 100% agree with), then you should download "Jsawyer Ultimate Edition", a version of the mod that was made by Josh Sawyer (the project director and designer of New Vegas) for the original release, but done in a way to work with Ultimate Edition. It does change a bit of the game's balance, but it makes it better, where it genuinely feels like you're even more in the post-apocalypse setting than before, while not making it too challenging for a new player. The mod actually scatters the Pre-order/Pack Items around the world where it makes sense to encounter them. I really do recommend two of these things for every New Vegas player old and new, it's just must have in my opinion.
I think my favourite game of all time may have lead me to a new content creator to follow. The insightful comments about conflict and relying on other people, followed by a "That's what she said" is just the right level of tonal whiplash for me.

Iron sights isn't always accurate, it depends on the gun. So don't trust it 100%. Caravan is actually an easy source of money once you figure it out.
You mention the survival mechanics just being "eat and drink at certain times". While i generally agree, there is one change to survival mode which makes a huge difference: stimpacks don't heal instantly. That's a reason why survival mode really spikes the difficulty. Not just more HP for enemies and eat/drink more than a human can consume in a day, but an actual mechanic change which makes the game harder. You take damage in combat, you'll slowly heal it with a stimpack instead of just ramming 7 needles in whatever bodypart is closest and coming out on top. ;)
In Morrowind, Vwardenfell was a settled area with descriptive landmarks so getting directions is easy and understandable. On the other other hand, this is a wasteland. What can people tell you? "keep going north until you find the third tumbleweed"?
4:29:47 this is where JESawyer's mod is fantastic. paired with hardcore mode it rebalances the whole game and makes it a fair bit more difficult in a number of ways, from making stimpacks come in different varieties to changing the values of armors throughout the game and more. He was one of the head writers/producers (ofc with a prolific twitter presence now) and it just enhances the vibe of the game to a huge degree imo.

The +1 in all skills meme is really damaging the run. Dont get why he does this when he clearly enjoys roleplaying. Will miss out on so many cool dialogue options, which is one of the things new vegas does best, giving every skill a use in dialogue at some point..
It always surprises me how few people understand how to play caravan, it was basically the only way i made caps until i got to the strip. You can always just check the rules online if you get confused
My favorite thing about Josh's "Milkman Build" is that the vanilla level cap is 50. Meaning by Lv50 he'll have around 65 - 80 skill level in all the skills. Which, on paper sounds great but he needs to get to Lv50. The second things is, he doesn't know about the exploit where if you re-do character creation upon leaving the Goodsprings area, if he chooses the Skilled trait again it stacks with the first time he took it. Giving him a +10 to all skills instead of +5. Thirdly, due to starving himself of skill points, he won't be able to really take any decent perks. So he'll have below average skill levels in everything, and no perks to show for it either. Which is fine, NV is easy enough to where you really don't need to worry about building optimally. But it's just such a terrible but amusing setup.
Concerning Hardcore mode, the survival aspects of it are really underdeveloped and more of a chore. However, the more important change is how stimpacks work and ammo weight which actually forces you to play differently, more prepared and cautious, and since spamming stimpacks doesnt work other healing items are much more valuable. I wouldnt recommend hardcore mode for the survival aspect to anyone, but if you have experience in new vegas then a hardcore mode run on max difficulty is great.
4:35:26 glad you were set on ignoring that regardless but damage threshold doesn't get solved simply by using a more damaging weapon. ammo type and strength is a factor as well.
I've been trying to figure out what's so familiar about Josh's cowboy voice and it's finally dawned on me that it's the same cadence as Jon Richardson as "The Countdown Kid". Reason why looting inside the correctional facility garners bad karma, is because technically, the stuff belongs to the NCR.
