  • As a follow up to my Home Studio Makeover videos, I do a comparison of my recording space to find out which setup is better, recording into the sound tiles or the hanging clothes in my closet. I also do a comparison of the Rodeo NT1 Signature Series vs the Blue Yeti USB. #voiceoverartist #microphonecomparison #homestudio

Love the intro and the A-B comp! I managed to call it right too! Woop!! The conclusion you have arrived at is also fair. There are some MUCH better USB mics other than the Yeti that are gaining more respect, like the Audio Technica AT2020 series. Perhaps this video should have been called Rolling Thunder!! That made me howl! Neither of us was not expecting that!! 😆😆 Great work, Robert! Keep on keepin' on! 💪🏾💪🏾

@@TrueNorf hahaha yeah the anti-USB thing is interesting. Even the NT1 5th Gen, when connected to USB, has equal sound quality compared to when it’s connected tot XLR. So who knows.
I figured I’d leave the thunder in also. Have a little fun with it. Haha

Thanks for creating and sharing this comparison. Interestingly, to my ears the Yeti sounded fuller and - again to my ears - a bit better than the NT1. Regarding the clothes closet, speaking toward the clothes sounded slightly better to my ears. One suggestion: If you haven't done so, try recording without the isolation shield. I quite using an isolation shield years ago and I prefer the sound sans the shield. You have a pleasing, natural sounding voice that will work well with a good number of reads. You also have the added benefit of being fluent in English and Spanish. Best of luck with your VoiceOver work.

@@StephenCarterStressExpert thanks a ton for the feedback, Stephen! Regarding the shield, yes, I’ve definitely considered that. That’s honestly more of a sentimental thing because it was a Father’s Day gift from a very supportive wife. But thanks a ton. This is all still so very new and I feel like I’ve not scratched the surface.

Awesome comparison! The blue Yeti sounds great and the gap between it & the NT1 isn't as large as one would think. As for the test facing the clothes, I completely agree. The recording facing the clothes sounds boxier while facing the tiles sounds clearer to my ears. I also have the NT1, due to the reputation behind it as you mentioned. It picks up so much sound that I was shocked at how loud the noise floor is in my closet 😭 I'm now working on getting that down to -60dB or close enough to remove it in editing without affecting the audio quality too much. I'm open to suggestions if you or anyone else has any.

@@SolariaLoranala thank you! The difference was closer than I thought and I think that’s a testament to putting effort into the recording space.
As for noise floor, I’m kind of stuck there. Audacity in the iPad is supposed to show a live meter but there’s a glitch that prevents it from showing on my specific laptop, which is frustrating. And I haven’t used an app on the iPad yet to show me a live meter either. If you have an idea on checking the noise floor another way, I’d love to hear it. From there, we can work on reducing the noise floor itself. Haha.

@@DayOneVoiceover Not very familiar with audacity since I use adobe audition. Is clicking multi-view the correct option for audacity? I saw a video that recorded a “quiet” room and then he pressed “audio” and then “multi-view. ” Not sure if that’s the same meter you’re referring to though 🤔 I’ll do some more research and share any findings 🫡 😁

I would love to see you do an audio edit using DaVinci Resolve. I’m new to VO work and downloaded DaVinci after you mentioned but the audio editing is daunting and RUclips videos go through it like you should already know the basics.

@@duanecuster7166 man, I’m working on it. The thing is, the iPad version is not set up for it. I even called Blackmagic to ask. The closest I could find is recording your audio elsewhere and bringing it in to DR. It’s not a horrible workaround but still a necessary one nonetheless. I may switch my efforts to Logic Pro.
