The problem of Firefighting isn't that people are not applying but for Paid on Call firefighters there are alot of people applying it's the way they do the hiring process. Stop letting the psychological people be the one's to determine who should be in or out. They have no flipping idea on what it takes to be a firefighter. And also 85% percent of the dept's calls are medical and alot of them a fire truck isn't necessary. And I have 20 yrs as a EMT and been working on a ALS/BLS since and even at my job we cancel fire when we don't need the fire dept.
Yup! Start paying your fighters and stop crying about it! That’s how you are going solve your issue. It’s absolutely insane that any department in the metro area is not full time. We are not crazy for asking to be paid we are one of the worst states in the country with the most volunteers compared to full time.
alot of fire depts don't want to change the way they hire but also try new things to where the tax payers don't have to pay more. And alot of fire dept calls now are more medicals than anything.
Start hiring and paying full time firefighters. The issue is not that people don’t want to volunteer their time, it’s that they don’t want another full time job that they aren’t getting paid for. The time takes away from their families in the moment and ultimately at the end of life. When you make firefighting a career like any other state I promise you will have people who want to do that career. Quit complaining and look at the faults of Minnesotas fire departments across the state there are solutions. On the basis of money, I’ll offer two things ask the government fund more because half of what other states fund will not cut it and county-wide fire departments. You can pool money, have less stations, and have full time firefighters that even with less stations will make it to calls faster than the volunteer departments.
They need to, sure, but, will local budgets allow it is the big question. Not all towns and villages will be able to do it because they don't have that kind of money even with grants like SAFER. Somewhere along the line, something has to give. I'm not against full time because I know people who do it. It's just that places can and should only spend within their means.

How is the 4th largest city not all paid full-time fire fighters!?!?

Well, about time. Fire departments need to be full time.
