  • Healing is messy. In this stoic, powerful talk, Carine Kanimba, explores the tragedy, shock, shame, connection and forgiveness associated with her experience in surviving the worst genocide in modern history in Rwanda. Ultimately, she believes that empathy and kindness will prevail and that people become stronger and learn to forgive if they can share their story.
With special thanks to core the TEDxPortland organizing team, 70+ volunteers and cherished partners - without you this experience would not be possible. Our event history can be found TEDxPortland.com
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Carine was born in Kigali, Rwanda shortly before the genocide of 1994. She survived the Rwandan genocide thanks to her adoptive father, Paul Rusesabagina, whose story is portrayed in the movie Hotel Rwanda. Growing up in Belgium and the U.S., Carine completed her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and masters in Law and Economics from Aix-Marseille University, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, and University of Bologna. Today, Carine works for Flat World Partners, an advisory and investment intermediary focused on impact investing. Video Description: “She survived the Rwandan genocide thanks to her adoptive father, Paul Rusesabagina.” Not quite. Listen to her again or you can even just watch the movie itself. This is what she says:
7:50 “While everything was going on at the hotel, my sister and I were ALREADY at the refugee camp [at Kabuga], rescued by a friend of the family. This is where [at Kabuga] if you saw the film, my sister and I are reunited with Paul and Tatiana.”
Tatiana was her paternal aunt. Just like she had adopted Rusesabagina’s children from his previous marriage, Rusesabagina also later adopted Tatiana’s two nieces. The speaker is one of the two.
She indicates that she and her sister were sheltered at Kabuga until the end of the genocide. Rusesabagina didn’t even know they were there. They and the rest of the refugees at Kabuga were protected by the only forces that actually put their own lives on the line to fight the genocide. Those forces were called the RPA (The Rwandan Patriotic Army).
Many of them lost their lives or limbs on the battlefield; others from their ranks suffered the same in the course of highly risky operations to rescue genocide victims from behind the genocidaires’ lines. They too deserve recognition for giving their own lives in order to save other people’s lives.
The people they were rescuing were almost always strangers, totally unknown to their rescuers, who often had to carry them literally on their shoulders under enemy fire.

“Celebrating rescuers also may incentivize undeserving individuals to misrepresent their actions. The case against Rusesabagina demonstrates that upstander narratives aren’t always simple or clear and that supposed heroes might also or instead be villains.” (Z KAUFMAN, Assoc prof of law and political science, The University of Houston Law Center - New York Daily News | Oct 27, 2020)

“Rusesabagina’s conduct both during and since the genocide has come under scrutiny, particularly by his fellow Rwandans. Survivors who took refuge in the hotel have denounced Rusesabagina, claiming that he exploited their desperation to extort money and that he collaborated with genocide perpetrators. Based on Rusesabagina’s activities since 1994, the Rwandan government has also accused him of terrorism, arson, kidnap, murder, and redirecting donations intended for his humanitarian foundation to fund terrorist activities.”

Now her adoption father is facing Terrorism charges in Rwanda, A serious case that is now even implicating some African presidents, 2 U.S. senators as well as various NGOs in Europe and U.S.
Hotel Rwanda was a Hollywood fiction story that helped Rwanda to get the world's attention.
But the truth with in the play is scarce, both the Canadian general who lead UN troops which actually were responsible for the protection of people who were at Hotel des Mille Collines and people who took refuge at the hotel have said that the movie was more of a fictional story than being a real tale.
Rusesabagina had no anyway to save anyone.
The story of Hotel Rwanda helped to draw the world's attention, that's what Rwanda's liked for but not the fuction story in it.
The genocide in against Tusti in Rwanda was a very complex tragedy that involved many countries, directly like France and Belgium and indirectly like South Africa, U.S. and more.
    Today new revelations still come.
