''Pure Evil''... ''Travel In Stygian''... ''Desert Rain''... ''The Path I Choose''... ''My Own Savior''... ''Coming Curse''... ''Iced Earth''... ''When The Night Falls''... I repeat, by ''Alive In Athens'' album, not studio version.

iced Earth is definitely a power metal band, but their older stuff (like this song) borders on the thrashy side of the genre. Jon Schaffer only did vocals on this song...their singer was John Greely but he was replaced for their 3rd album with Matt Barlow who was replaced in 2004 with Tim Ripper Owens, but returning again from 2007-2011, replaced again with Stu Block (ex-Into Eternity). Jon also did a side project with Hansi (Blind Guardian's singer) called Demons & Wizards. Cheers!

  • @craven1927
    @craven1927 4 года назад +4

Iced Earth is a band that could fall into a couple of different categories. In general they would be considered power metal because of the vocals and lyrical content. But a lot of their music crosses over into straight thrash as well. One thing to keep in mind when listening to their older material, they had 3 different lead singers on their first 3 albums. It wasn't until their third guy, Matt Barlow, that they really started to click and find the sound that they became known for. For most Iced Earth fans, Barlow is considered THE voice of the band. The Alive in Athens cd is a great performance of the band during the Barlow era and they cover a few of the older tunes with him on vocals including this one. Barlow was eventually replaced with Tim "Ripper" Owens (ex-Judas Priest) for two albums, before returning to the band. Barlow eventually left again, and was replaced with their current singer Stu Block. Much like Megadeth, the one constant has been guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer. While the "voice" of Iced Earth may be up for debate, there is no doubt that Schaffer is the heart and soul of the band.
Also, keep in mind that just because a band is labeled a certain way, that doesn't mean every song they make falls into that category. Metallica is thrash. For Whom the Bell Tolls, not a thrash song. Megadeth is thrash. Symphony of Destruction, not a thrash song. Iced Earth combines a lot of thrash elements along with a lot of power metal elements, so which style they fall under greatly depends on the individual song, and not even necessarily a whole album or era.

@@DethThrasher1 In my opinion the Alive in Athens live version of Travel in Stygian and Angel's Holocaust are superior to the originals.

He had a unique and interesting tone.

Iced Earth is one of my favorite bands ever!!! They have so many amazing songs and albums and they are one of the most consistent bands I have ever seen. In my opinion Iced Earth has very few filler songs and the majority of them are amazing quality. Jon Schaffer the head songwriter and only original member left is an amazing musician. Iced Earth in my opinion are extremely underrated. In my opinion they should be as big as Iron Maiden and Metallica. They are that PHENOMENAL to me. I love every Iced Earth era and lead singers that they have had. Matt Barlow will always be considered their classic lead singer, but I love all of them. Stu Block their most recent lead singer in my opinion is perfect and I love all three albums that he sings on especially Dystopia and Incorruptible.

That's cuz this was originally the style of "Purgatory" Jon's first band from the late 80s. After Matt Barlow joined it become more power cuz of his type of vocals, it changed yet again when Tim Owens from Judais priest joined on temporarily while matt took a break to become a New York firefighter after 9/11 for a few years before coming back for one last album. then band changed once more after Stu Block (current singer) from "into eternity" joined

Iced Earth is a great band because they mix the best of Power metal and Thrash metal, and cranking all of it up. This album was before Matt Barlow, so the vocals were a lot more in the Metallica or Slayer style, whereas Matt originally started emulating Greely's voice but eventually took it in a much more Power style with more soaring notes and emotional register.
But Jon Schaffer the guitarist has always been a riff master, the lord of the galloping guitar. His hand is rock solid, never missing a note and just driving these nasty riffs that make Iced Earth so good. They absolutely love to write transitions, and as you can see their music is very rarely the same twice in the same song, meaning they go on long runs of transitioning into variations on the same riff with melodies and tempo changes.
The irony is, live the singer is actually Shaffer, rather than Barlow. And honestly, it works great, Jon is a really decent singer and backing vocalist. It's so hard to get people to go on the Iced Earth journey, but one song really can't give you a great idea of who they are as a band.
I would say that Alive in Athens is required viewing. It is an amazing concert, probably the best vocal work Matt has ever done live (even with the redubbing of parts) and it hits all the best songs from before the Ripper era, which means all the classics. Of course, Gettysburg is an amazing song trilogy too, Ripper did some of his best work ever with this band, and then Crucible of Man is Matt returning and I think putting some of his best vocals ever onto a CD. I'm not a fan of the Block era, so that's more a personal thing.

Iced Earth is really a power/thrash band, their main two influences are Metallica (Hetfield's rhythm playing particularly) and Iron Maiden (their sense of melody). They were based in Tampa, Florida at the time when the death metal scene was flourishing, rehearsing right next to Obituary and Morbid Angel - and they were recording in Morrisound studios, so they got a lot of aggression from that side of things, esp. on the first three albums I'd say (Stormrider is from their second one). From their on, the power metal really gets more prominent (it was also the time of its peak, the 90s) and Horror Show is their most power metal album really, reminding of Blind Guardian (they toured together at the time, then of course there was the Demons and Wizards project with Hansi Kursch, by the way, please react to Fiddler on the Green!).
Jon Schaffer is an amazing rhythm guitarist, he writes some really nasty riffs. He took the Disposable Heroes picking and really went away with it... I prefer their earlier days (Burnt Offerings is my favorite) but they have a solid discography...

The song Pure Evil has more of that power metal sound on that album. I'd say Iced Earth are a mix of Power Metal and Thrash. They sometimes crossover more into either genre. The vocals on this aren't even done by their standard vocalist. Their guitarist did the vocals on this one. They normally go for more classic metal sounding vocals with a little bit of thrash edge. Would have recommended some Blind Guardian for a Power Metal introduction. They're iconic.

Iced Earth is American Power Metal as opposed to European Power Metal. It's a bit more thrashy than Euro power metal as you can tell. But with Iced Earth specifically the band is essentially Jon Schaffer's band. He is the rhythm guitarist and he has a signature riff style that is prevalent throughout most of their songs. The band has gone thru a lot of line-up changes, but Jon is the mainstay and founder of the band. He's a real cool dude and he runs a historical relic shop in Indiana I believe. At least he did for a while anyway. But he's a Civil War buff and Iced Earth does several Civil War songs.

It's probably been said numerous times, but you shoulda done this song from the Alive In Athens DVD, with Matt Barlow on vocals. Therefore please do "Desert Rain" from that DVD.

Jon Schaffer sings lead vocals on every version. The clean intro is the exception with this one by John Greely (sp?) and Matt Barlow on the Days of Purgatory compilation the requestor mentioned

In my mind, Jon Schaefer is the tightest rhythm guitarist of his metal generation.

Original version was sung by rhythm guitar god Jon Schaffer and still is to this day. He sings backup on a few other songs (and a key part in Gettysburg's final song in the trilogy). I rather like his voice. Not much in the way of range but he has a cool sound. As much as everyone loves Matt Barlow (who would join the band after this album), Jon Schaffer IS Iced Earth and Stormrider is one of the best examples of their thrash influenced power metal sound. If you look at where and when they started, its no shock their sound is heavier, more aggressive and more raw than most power metal, as the tampa bay scene at that time birthed alot of legendary death metal bands including the legendary Death, Morbid Angel but also other power metal bands like Savatage.

Super underrated band, as years went on they got more melodic with the vocals. When people ask me what they sound like I just say they’re a heavier version of Iron Maiden

Iced Earth = If Metallica, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden had kids that started a band! Jon Schaeffer is a master at his sick riff craft!

Ok I'll just say this, although Iced Earth isn't exactly my cup of tea they have one of the best metal album ever made: Horror Show.
Of course it's just my humble opinion.
Again thank you guys for another great reaction video.

this is an earlier album 1991 they became more power metal on or after their album Dark Saga I had the privledge to play with the lead guitar player Randall Shawver. One of the best!!
also the remake Matt Barlowe just sings the intro to the song John Schafer sings the lead vocals again.John Schafer consider his sound Heavy Metal.

Iced Earth is probably my favourite power metal band (them or Edguy).
They’re just as much thrash as they are power though imo. Check out Dante’s Inferno and Dracula.

Actually, if you want an IE make sistah cry, try “Watching Over Me” which Jon Schaffer wrote about his friend who died in a motorcycle accident.
