I believe that the Power Windows songs you have done are helping you realize there is so much more to RUSH than just their 70's prog Era. Far Cry from Snakes & Arrows is VERY relevant to the state of the world today and would be a great next RUSH tune for you to do. 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🙂
Neil was asked about the song in an interview and in his reply he said he wrote it as an exercise in not using the snare. He added it in a couple parts of the chorus, but without a snare beat, it takes on a very Eastern sounding rhythm :)
Ah - Rush's synth era. Heavy synths on 1984's Grace Under Pressure, 1985's Power Windows & 1987's Hold Your Fire. Rush was doing Rush and left some of their fans behind in this era. They pushed the synths back for 1989's Presto and 1991's Roll The Bones. I think they were minimized in 1993's Counterparts and never returned to the forefront. The lyrics are still great, the instruments all more technical/subtle and in retrospect so so good. Interesting that you are so into this era. This album and especially Hold Your Fire was derided by many Rush fans at the time. I happen to like all of the eras... Very fun watching your Rush journey! Keep going - so much more to discover. And don't quit until you finish the catalog. 2012's Clockwork Angels might be their best album. Working Man in Cleveland is amazing, especially when you remember they were in their late 50's and regularly performed almost 3 hour long concerts. Working Man was the last thing they played after almost 3 hours on stage!
People think of this album as a keyboard and orchestral album, but Alex just crushes the guitars on every track. Also Neil’s drum part here is the spiritual preview for 1989’s Scars.
Yeah as someone who loves guitar, Alex is incredible on this album. The way he uses his instrument to create the sound effects for the songs is amazing. Takes so much innovation and talent. Any real guitar fan should be able to point out his wisdom here
I never got this era being a "synth album" period. Yes they added them, no they didn't usurp Alex in any way. On that same note, people think Hold Your Fire ended this period and Counterparts saw them change it up... um.... so I guess Rush never released Presto or Roll the Bones then? People who don't like this era can simply say they don't like change, and leave it at that. It has nothing to do with Alex's playing, keyboards, electric drums pads, Geddy's hair style or anything about Rush.
Yes, another RUSH reaction from the best reaction channel! I agree Alex upped his game in this era, probably thinking, "I will not be upstaged by these synths." Mystic Rythms next for the Rush army, pls!
Alex’s guitar sound just jump out of the song in this and on Grace Under Pressure and Hold Your Fire 🔥. So inventive in his approach to finding a unique guitar sound that cuts through the synth sound. Yes, Alex, the soul of the band, is as much a musical genius as Neil and Geddy. So incredible for us that these 3 guys found each other!!
Musically you are taken to different territories, you have African, Asian influences against a modern western sound of the day. Just like Spirit of Radio, a lot is said in the music.
I gotta say, I really love all your analogies about this song... the drums, guitars, and the opposites of the lyrics/music. I never thought of the "bongo" and the different territories aspect of it. Thanks for that, as that's a really cool perspective! Well done video, "D"... love it.
This is my favorite song off the Power Windows album. Geddy Lee’s bass playing is pure brilliance on this track. Neil is Neil and Alex brings rock to the forefront in a multi-cultural tune. Territories.
My top 5 favorite Rush album. Magical songs on this album. Love the sound of Neils drums on this album. #1 song of this album is "Middletown Dreams". Love the middle synth solo on this one. I will listen to Rush until the day i die. P.S you better change the title, otherwise you get raided by Rush fans. The song is "Territories".
Just thought I'd add that since you seem to appreciate pinch harmonics, Jacob's Ladder has them for days! Also, it's a song about battling storm clouds. :-)
The best way to describe the music not matching the lyrics. Polarized contrast. They are are heading the lyrics to the chorus where then it rips. So in effect they are creating two different vibes. One sort of more innocent in feel then the darker truth of the lyrical content. That's how I see and feel from it
Dunno if I'm overthinking this but this song does have a kind of samba beat to it at the beginning before the drums really do kick in. Always makes me wanna shimmy anyway! Ha ha! 😆
Good pickup on the "bongo" style drumming, Neil actually spent some time in Africa, one of his books called The Masked Rider details his cycling adventures there, and in it he tells about having a little jam session with with a tribal drummer, and no doubt African drumming has influenced him.
This is 1 of my favorites off this Album for it's uniqueness 🤯 even for Rush! This Live "off our new Album" ☺️ made me immediately go out and buy this tape. Sony Walkmans were "a new thing" and I got one for Christmas. 🙄😏 Gosh, I feel old. 😒 I still remember being "amazed" at iPods! 😒 Yup, feeling old.... 😋🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
I think musically they were going for an eastern sound with Alex’s beginning parts and the tribal drumming of Neil throughout. Much more emphasis on his toms and less on the snare. Geddy is playing some bass parts with his foot pedals in the more prominent keyboard parts and then the reverse in the bass heavy parts. That’ probably explains the switching that you were hearing. To finish this album you may as well react to Grand Designs and Big Money.
I was one of those "alienated" Rush fans, who, raised on the '70s prog-Rush, felt a little betrayed by the embrace of "New-Wave Synths." I was unsettled by the fading of Alex in the mix in "Signals," but was heartened by relics like "Analog Kid," that showed Lifeson was still in the band. Then along came "(Dis)Grace Under Pressure," which I just couldn't reconcile with my love of Rush as the ultimate GUITAR band. "Power Windows" seemed more of the same. "Hold Your Fire" went even deeper into that synthetic mid-range keyboard wash filling every available space and leaving Alex a puzzle just to fit into. Alex IS NOT Andy Summers, and to relegate him to that "color commentary" role seemed counterintuitive and counterproductive. I faded off from Rush until "Presto," but didn't fully regain my fanaticism until "Vapor Trails." However, now, with the mellowing of time, I have learned to accept those three albums as a noble yet failed experiment. I actually really dig the songs now, but do indeed dream of those three albums stripped of synths and crackling with up-front Alex riffage. I like the "New Wave 3" for what they are, which seems to me to be a sort of stylistic cul-de-sac - the lyrics, drums, basswork, and guitar (when it is fitted in) are all top-notch, but the production choices, and those damned swooshing synthesizers, styill make the 3 my least favorite of the boys' whole catalogue. But even "bad" Rush is better than the best work of most other bands. Keep up the good work, Detrucci!
I wasn't thrilled with the songs of this era when they came out - - Grand Designs and Marathon were the exceptions (I loved them from the start) - - Territories, like most of the rest, has grown on me over the years, and I really like it now - - I enjoyed your take on it, you pointed out stuff I'd never really noticed - - Of course, I don't play an instrument, so there's a lot of things I probably don't have an ear to appreciate ... I just listen to the overall sound ... and the great lyrics - -
Thanks for pointing that out Santiago :) I recorded Territories a few days ago, but I also did Grand designs last night. Looks like I uploaded the wrong video due to them having the same album cover haha. Its all good though, I will upload Grand Designs over the next few days ^^
You get it brother! Rush is so great please post more rush videos try vapor trails the remixed version it’s sooooo good I know you will enjoy it! I enjoy watching you enjoy it.
Detrucci should watch the official video for The Big Money when he gets round to that one I think. Wanna see what he thinks of the band in their 80's phase visually. It's a fab video in any case! 😎
That slap bass... Another kick ass reaction to a kick ass tune. My only critique is the tune was a little quiet. Rush fans don't want to just react to you, we want to jam with you! In terms of complexity I think this song was one of their more straight forward simplistic tunes (for Rush). Great Vid! Was getting a little tired of hearing all the YYX/ Tom Sawyer reactions out there. As far as reaction suggestions, Yea Natural Science is good, but I would love to hear Neurotica, Dreamline, Working them angels, Red Barchetta, god so many....
Neil is playing his concert toms, not bongos, but yes the playing style is and ode to Eastern or African cultures in some of the sounds. Same with Alex's guitar in the intro. Why did u pause and talk right at the end of the song with just a few seconds left?
By definition, half of their songs are going to be below their average … that's a depressing thought. I love this one for the kick drum, the tempo is mesmerising to me and everything else branches off of it in all sorts of strange ways.
You liked Rammstein Bück dich So I think you should react to the Finnish band TURMION KÄTILÖT - Naitu (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) ruclips.net/video/ltsVs2_HIBc/видео.html
Hmmm. You rated Territories as below average. I'd have to disagree with you there. I'd put this one at #2 after Marathon on this album. PW does have some below average tunes, but this isn't one of them in my opinion. Great reaction tho.
The awesome thing about music is everyone likes different styles of songs. Territories is a fantastic song, I just feel others on the album are more my taste is all. I still love this one along with all the other RUSH songs I have reacted to! 😊
I think as time goes by the masses will start to appreciate the synth years. LOVE THIS ERA!!!!!
This era is Lit!
Except for Geddy's raccoon hair, of course.
80's Rush, particularly, the Power WIndows album, is my favourite. Love it!
I believe that the Power Windows songs you have done are helping you realize there is so much more to RUSH than just their 70's prog Era.
Far Cry from Snakes & Arrows is VERY relevant to the state of the world today and would be a great next RUSH tune for you to do. 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🙂

Haha that it does :) Interesting how taking away 1 drum can change the entire dynamic
Speaking of Grand Designs, that should be next. Hope you stay on the Power Windows train:)
Ah - Rush's synth era. Heavy synths on 1984's Grace Under Pressure, 1985's Power Windows & 1987's Hold Your Fire. Rush was doing Rush and left some of their fans behind in this era. So many Rush fans criticized their change in direction, but as you point out, it was Rush just being Rush and exploring new concepts and sounds.
Lewis Bernstein I like all the eras too. The only album I dislike is Vapor Trails.
In power windows, Alex Lifson was unbelaviable guitar work!

"Better the pride that resides in a citizen of the world, than the pride that divides, when a colourful rag is unfurled"! Neil at his lyrical best. 🥁
Thanks man - you do an awesome job, and I appreciate that you are covering some of the more obscure songs!
Hey D, keep up the great work! "The Big Money" MUST be your next listen on this album.
Well I did a reaction to Grand Designs already, just need to upload it. But I am sure Big Money will be the next one I will record from this album
Yes, another RUSH reaction from the best reaction channel! I agree Alex upped his game in this era, probably thinking, "I will not be upstaged by these synths." Mystic Rythms next for the Rush army, pls!
Aww you are kind :)
They all play lead at times Detrucci and showcase their proficiency on each of their chosen instruments
Thats a good way of describing it
This song is rarely reacted to for some reason, but it’s an excellent song. 👍👌
I have always felt that there is a little bit of anger in the pre-chorus, a lot of energy and power. Geddy's bass riff conveys that emotion.
Musically you are taken to different territories, you have African, Asian influences against a modern western sound of the day. Just like Spirit of Radio, a lot is said in the music.
Yes :)
Rush= Very Complex.
My favorite song off of “Power Windows”. If you watch the live version off of “A Show of Hands”, you’ll be BLOWN AWAY.
Considering he likes this era, that entire concert would be an ideal show for him to watch!
Have been waiting for you to do this song! Patiently waiting for The Big Money :)
I love how they captured an 'Eastern' sound to this song. Great reaction man.
Love Neil's play on words again -
In different circles
and
Indifferent circles
Love your commenting on the actual guitar sound and tone, something that most don’t even hear!
He! He! Different tastes and all! Glad you still liked it!
This album is Epic
If the worst thing that happens today is I Listen to a grand designs reaction that instead was territories
That’s a pretty great day
Thank you for giving Alex his props! He’s the best Period
I gotta say, I really love all your analogies about this song... the drums, guitars, and the opposites of the lyrics/music. I never thought of the "bongo" and the different territories aspect of it. Thanks for that, as that's a really cool perspective! Well done video, "D"... love it.
The production, still amazing.
I agree
This is my favorite song off the Power Windows album. Geddy Lee’s bass playing is pure brilliance on this track. Neil is Neil and Alex brings rock to the forefront in a multi-cultural tune. Territories.
My favourite rush song along with yyz. :)
A good term for the drum riffs would be "tribal", which fits the overall theme very well.
Love it, Detrucci!
Rush fans are so nice though ^^ Respect to you all
Always love this song, great reaction, thanks
First! Absolutely amazing album! Props for stickin' with it! I'll be stickin' with this channel!
The real Grand Designs react coming up next in a few days Chris :)
@@Detrucci It's cool... I knew what you meant 😉
Thanks for the Good Rush music! I'm happy!
Great reaction and insight, as always. Thanks for continuing the journey. Hoping you can get around to Jacob's Ladder at some point. RUSH ARMY!
Just thought I'd add that since you seem to appreciate pinch harmonics, Jacob's Ladder has them for days! Also, it's a song about battling storm clouds. :-)
Also, if you dig this era you should check out New World Man from the album Signals. Another "synth era" hit.
One of my all time faves from that album, along with The Big Money and Middletown Dreams
You must view the live version from Clockwork Angels tour. Sublime
I will. I actually really like the look of the stage on that concert so I would love to jump in to that
Territories

Yes, I just didnt want to use the word Bipolar for obvious reasons :) But it does describe it perfectly haha
Beautiful rock and roll !
The lyrics are so sad and so true..
Don't feed the people but we feed the machines
Geddy Lee has bass peddes down at on the floor at his feet, and low keys up at key board!
Play " BIG MONEY "
Dunno if I'm overthinking this but this song does have a kind of samba beat to it at the beginning before the drums really do kick in. Always makes me wanna shimmy anyway! Ha ha! 😆

Greg Cormier there is also an extra keyboard helping Geddy on this album, I forget his name. But, Power Windows is a underrated masterpiece imo.
Cody&Abbie I believe it was Andy Richards helping out on keys in the studio for this album
#EmotionDetector next tune from Power Windows
Pure genius
