Do you know what a Nashville tuned guitar is? In this video I'm going to challenge your ears. And if they're good enough, you could end up winning a guitar (or other cool prizes). All you have to do is figure out when I'm using a Nashville tuned guitar (with a 6-string) and when I'm using a 12-string guitar. Easy? Watch and find out.
Did you know that many of your favorite 12-string songs don't actually use a 12-string? That's right, many producers use a Nashville tuned guitar coupled with a 6-string to achieve a more "controllable 12-string sound.
The challenge (contest) is simple: I perform a section of five classic 12-string songs. In each, you need to figure out if I'm playing a 12-string or a Nashville tuned guitar and a 6-string. Don't let the video fool you. Email the answers to markaranalli@gmail.com. At the end of December 2023, I will pick a winner from the correct entries...if there are any! You only get one guess so listen carefully!
If you'd like to support the channel, please consider purchasing the Rok-Lok. It's a revolutionary new strap lock that works with every guitar's original hardware*, doesn't require any tools, and easily installs in seconds!

I will be in the air, but I will listen as soon as I can.
You can fly. Awesome. Teach me!
Logging in....travelling today, hope i have connection
No connection is a godsend. That's why I love cruises....and rehab (they take your phone). LOL
Ready 2 Rock🤠
Thanks Johnny. You have been so supportive for such a long time. What can I say other than thank you!
Mark, thank you for exposing me to Nashville turning, I was never aware of it. Nice playing
I've exposed a lot of things. lol
Interesting video Mark. I honestly couldn't tell, so I look forward to finding out and listening again when you tell us which was which 🎸🎸🎸🤔🤔🤔🤔🙂
Don't overthink it and don't use the video for clues. Listen. :)
I didn’t not know about Nashville tuning. I’m going to try it even though I have two 12s.
Learned something new today. Thanks Mark.
I'm a late comer to it as well. I just recently found out that Sam Shepard the actor and Sam Shepard the playwright are one in the same. Sad thing is that I'm a fan of both. I never knew. It was a big ah ha moment for me. LOL
This is an interesting video, Mark. And fun! Gonna need to listen a couple more times before I guess which is which. 😊
Yes Carl. Don't worry about the video. It's all in the recordings. :) good luck!
This is a tricky one, I listened with eyes closed and still I am not absolutely sure!
Frequencies and luck is going to win it. :)
Great video Mark. Nicely done. I'm not going to hazard a guess but will say Nashville tuning is fun to play around with even on its own. I once put the octave strings from a set of D'Addario 12 string acoustic strings on an Art and Lutherie Legacy just to see what it was like and was quite pleased with the effect. I believe D'Addario markets sets of strings for Nashville tuning.
Hey Ross. I feel like I haven't heard from you in a while. Always a pleasure. Thanks for always supporting. I'll check out the DA strings (I'd rather do that then have to either scrounge em up or break a 12 string set. Have a great weekend. Mark
Hi Mark - interesting challenge! Recently StringJoy had a "lesson" on Nashville tuning that was pretty interesting. They offer custom string gauges for Nashville. Now I would have guessed ALL the studio versions were ALL 12-string though I do recall TP may have been Nashville...IDK but I DO know those opening chords to "Free Fallin'" sound super powerful on a 12-string! I guess I will be surprised won't I?
You're the third person to mention that today. I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the tip. I appreciate the incredible support. Have a great weekend and take care. Mark
Wow , never heard of it. #2 for my vote 🗳 🙏 Happy Thanksgiving To You and Yours.
Happy Thanksgiving to you to Sal. I'm a relative newcomer to it myself. Certainly no foul! :)
another kick ass video. I think I know...
Thank you sir. Slow start. We shall see what happens tomorrow.
Rok-lok looking good.
yes
Yesterday I was thinking, what is the difference in sound between Nashville tuned with 6 string vs 12 String. Then this video comes out, perfect timing. Thank you 😂
That's awesome. I get those things sometimes. I think we are all a lot more alike then we'd all like to think. that was a mouthful. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time and comment. Have a great weekend. Mark
Have a feeling 1,3,&5 are the Nashville tuned tracks because of what seems like clarity of each note/chord in the higher and lower frequencies.
You are on the right track. Frequencies is the key. The video and listening for space in between notes won't do it...at least I don't think so.
Songs 1 and 4 were regular 12 string. Others used Nashville tuning.
Good guess but not quite. Only emailed answers count so you're still good to go. Have a great weekend and thanks for supporting! Mark
Loved the pictures of Jeff Lynn and Terry Brown ! What a great exercise for those wanting to develop an inner ear for sound. Great video Mark and a great conversation topic as well !
Great video
Great video! Good Job Mark!
great one my pov #1 nashville tunning #2 nashsville #3 both #4 12 strings #5 6 strings
mark, i thought we were friends, and now you're trying to trick me haha! i'd hazard a guess that they all were nashville [except for 4], but i have a bad head cold and i keep hearing the telephone ringing! otherwise, i certainly can recommend that people get a rok-lok - i got two!
Your head cold has you damn close.
I have a Fender Telecoustic I keep Nashville strings on. I can get pretty close to banjo and mandolin tones acoustically and a sort of harpsichord sound with a little amp.
Mark is a good guitar player and can track 2 different guitars very near identically which helps! 😊 I’m sure I am wrong but thought 1 & maybe 4 were the 12 strings.
It's tough and I worked hard on separating the 12 string string sets and trying to match the Nash and 6 as closely as possible. I did have to shift about three transients that would have been giveaways for the sake of time. don't tell.
This Mark is a Cool theme for your video. I of course have a Nashville tuned Guitar. I have had numerous veteran players pick it up and say WTF is this. There's no Base sound at all. I always tell them strum G-C-Am-D while I do the same on a regular tuned 6 string. Mostly their jaw drops. Personally I rarely use it its probably 23rd least played out of my 24 guitars. I just think its so much easier to just play a 12 string instead of two Guitars. As far as the five songs I'd guess just Free Falling and maybe Closer to the Heart were in were recorded using Nashville tuning. Sorry I missed this live . Dad passed 2 years ago today had a busy morning with his widow.
You are very close to being exactly opposite. Guess again and email it this time. 24 guitars is admirable. Do you know that before I had the channel I never owned more than 5 guitars at any one time in my life. That includes electrics, acoustics, and basses. And I believe in 35 years, I only owned 12 various guitars. I have three times that right now and it only took four years.
“Overproduced three chord songs with bad lyrics”. 😂😂😂
Who said that. Not me. :o
Great video! I've entered! :)
Actually actually regardless of whether you are right or wrong and one could sense the difference between the two?
Yes. In the frequencies. Good call. It's still hard to pick though. I couldn't do it if I wasn't the one who played them. Thanks so much for checking the video out. I appreciate your time and thoughts. Have a great weekend. Mark
Well I can’t tell the difference not used to my new hearing aids yet and can’t hear anything without them so I will have to sit this contest out, good video though you rocked it
Robert. Honestly, if you take your hearing aids out and just guess, you'll be the most accurate. :)
@@8MinuteAxe I will give it a shot
Damn hearing aid(s)! My hearing is shot too. Gigs were too loud as a kid. Listened to music with the volume waaaay too loud and my headphone volume so loud my wife would hear it clearly. Most frequently uttered word is "what?".
37 years around fighter jets took its toll on my hearing 😮
Love my Rok-Loks.
It makes sense; it's a little hard to finger-pick a 12... if you can get the same sound with a Nashville tuned 6, why not?
Landet in schiphol.....and im in :)
Im def going to try, this was new 2 me. I will string my old Yamaha with Nashville tuning. Many thanks.
I couldn't have said it better myself (take out the word better)
My friend hashis backup guitar in Nashville tuning says has helped his song writing ....should be interesting.
I am thinking of changing my VOX 12 string to Nashville tuning....(just bought a BURNS 12 string electric) .but should I keep the top 3 strings paired...is it over the top. Would it damage the guitar?
The joke was a cheap shot. I'm not a country fan but guys like Brent Mason and Guthrie Trapp are jaw droppingly good. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I wouldn't be allowed to deliver water to the studios in Nashville.
Sounds the same to me. I would eliminate the extra guitar and player and be very happy with the singular 12 string. I would get a real 12 string instead of that Taylor.
I agree. I would always eliminate me. When I do, things usually sound much better. LOL. Thanks for your time and comment. I do appreciate it. Have a great weekend. Mark
On this pale horse I ride!
nice. great lyrics
@@8MinuteAxeWasn’t your first riff, Wanted Dead or Alive? I thought you would finish the lyrics like the last 2 times 😀
You pointing this out it is Mark right?
Don't try to use the video. That was just for fun. You were on the right path with the other comment. :)
