I wore a pair of sealskinz for the first time today. They stayed dry initially but within an hour they were soaked through

Especially the socks are amazing, no drop comes through by heavy rain.
For gloves I've chose Roeckl because my hands tend to feel sweaty in Sealskinz.

they look massive considering they are a small, i would use large myself but after watching that i am not so sure the large won't be a foot too long

These gloves are shit, I wore them on Friday last weekend in dreadful rain for 3hrs and they were wet inside, the issue is, they are made in China, and that is why they suck. And the warranty is equally dreadful for what claim to be a UK based and made company.

That's not a very good test. You need to keep them submerged for a longer period. If they're still dry after 30 minutes, I'd call that a legit test.
