Honestly good for C418 for keeping the rights to his music. Whenever you produce anything working under someone you don't hold the rights and it always felt so unfair to me.
@user-in8qh3zf9d this is such an off topic question but if employees are slacking off its the employers responsibility to employ qualified ones and his responsibility to control and coordinate them. Employer obviously is able to terminate the labour contract since the primary obligation of the worker is to perform the work and follow orders from employer. Workers slacking off, making mistakes, causing damages is employers responsibility as he has to coordinate his work force.
@@MariaM11 Sure this is great in practice, but in Europe its incredibly difficult to fire an employee, unless there has been some serious misconduct, the firing process will likely cost more than just keeping them. Oh absolutely, that's probably one of the reasons that Micro$oft won't let him release it. It would become too popular. Already Micro$oft really seems to be pushing the mediocre new music, though the community is still obviously fixated on the old stuff. It would only amplify this effect if the 3rd album released.
@@StuffandThings_ They wont "let him"? Its his work and they have no creative control over him.. which was the entire point of this video. I doubt they are stopping him.
@@finsfan90 It's a copyright thing I bet. If the album was meant for minecraft, and since microsoft owns the rights, C418 would probably face legal consequences. Undeserved legal consequences.
I don't think any of the new music is bad, but there is something that's always been slightly off about it. C418 has a very specific sound that isn't like anyone else, and I really hope that someday, we get to hear his third album. Also, I know that Minecraft Story Mode's soundtrack isn't really "Minecraft", but I still like it for what it is. Again, it's not bad music, but different from C418.
@@Minestreydeyeshua my guess is that Microsoft has huge ambitions, has them work on complicated code, And they’re also having to do more with less due to the less passionate devs, etc. It’s gotta be exhausting.

i genuinely believe without his soundtrack the game wouldn’t be widely regarded as on of the best videos games of all time. for me back in the day it’s what made the game feel special
I used to turn it off but for the last few years, I play with music on and I am grateful for C418 composing it, LET HIM BACK!!! (I mean without him having to submit rights to his music to Microsoft bruh)
The original minecraft demo with the big ass floating MINECRAFT in the sky was the first time I fired up the game. The music made me buy the game with the little bit of money I had saved up.
my only problem with the new songs is that they seem to take priority over the older songs despite not entirely fitting. so far the best are the ones by Kumi Tanioka but they still don't fit as well.
Yeah, I find they don’t fit, and it seems like they just play over and over again (possibly due to being biome-specific since you don’t leave your biome while building your base) while not being as repeat-friendly as C418’s music. I don’t dislike the new music, but I don’t like it either, and it becomes a little annoying to hear it repeat itself for the third time. And it’s not just nostalgia either, since I actually liked Volume Beta even when it was new. Honestly, it feels a little like when Super Meat Boy got new music after the bad blood between Edmund McMillen and Baranowsky. The new composers may be very talented and may have proven that in previous games, but here their music just feels out of place.
Here is the thing... It doesn't fit to be honest as Minecraft itself is very repetive, but doesn't mean it is bad. When you have not very "loop friendly" songs it sticks out like a sore thumb. I would love an option to disable newer songs and keep purely the older songs. If made that a staple so that people don't complain about X. songs in the go or Y. Songs. @@Key-Knight87 It's also a case of. Have a group of people enjoy X songs from 2009 till now. It's a slap to the face. Biome specific songs are a bad idea in my opinion as if you are a builder this makes it irritating while if you are an adventurer this works. The best approach is enable vs. disable per album and songs. As minecraft to the core is a Sandbox.
Coming down on Pigstep I feel is misguided. Pigsteps entire goal is to be radically different from the C418 tracks. It’s a different dimension, and a different civilization. This formula could’ve worked had they actually stuck to the gimmick of ONLY having guest artists in separate dimensions
@@SypherMinecraft The purpose of the OST has changed. You can't say it strayed from the OST when it literally is the OST. It's also a disc rather than an ambient track, and discs are known to have totally different moods than the ambient music.
@@SpikeShroom100% and again. The music of Minecraft is subjective as I said 🤷. Pro change and pro nostalgia. The disc was too different from the rest in my personal opinion and it felt like an outlier compared to the rest :)
I think Pigstep works fine as an easter egg Disc. Besides it's not like all Discs fit perfectly with the rest of C418's music. I'd argue that disc 11 is pretty iconic as well and it's almost the complete opposite of the rest of the calm and soothing soundtrack.
dude this is a nostalgia blast. the Minecraft trailer, DanTDMs lab, the only gameplay, the notch head, and then minecraft storymode absolutely awakened memories i had totally forgotten
I don't know how this ended up being recommended to me, or why I randomly decided to watch a Minecraft documentary, but this was so well done. I legit did a doubletake when I saw the view count. It's criminal that something with so much work behind it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I REALLY hope this blows up, because it should.
RUclips has recently changed their recommendation algorithm to cater more to people's interests than what is currently trendy, which is leading to a lot of smaller creators to get a brighter spotlight.
The only issue I have with this (otherwise pretty great!) essay is that the "per-biome" music was never an element of C418's music; only the new songs are assigned to specific biomes.
@@timewarpdrive77they are different artists, that have different styles. Thank you I didn't wanna watch 20 minutes of click bait drama just to find out c418 left on his own volition. And I think he was right to leave honestly and do think Microsoft clearly showed very little respect to one of the most influential video game soundtracks, but I wouldn't say "robbed" especially when, by leaving, he got to keep the rights to what he made.
@@thesunflowerseedenthusiast2481 to be fair it was more of a force out, as they started to replace his songs and Microsoft did not want to find a middle ground
Man.. This is really sad, c418's tracks truly are burned into the fond memories of playing minecraft back in the days. Truly a historical culture defining piece of art, C418 may have been replaced due to greed, but he is deeply rooted in our minds and we won't forget his contributions.
I am completely against the Idea of picking people into two categories, like "team change vs nostalgia". You can both have C418 doing the background soundtrack while new musicians trickle their music and art into music discs or new dimension themes
Fully agree. I think Minecraft has just been around for long enough that people are beginning to get blinded by nostalgia. I adore Lena Raine's additions to the OST. I also feel like a little kid again every time I hear songs like Wet Hands and Subwoofer Lullaby. I think part of the charm of Minecraft is the childhood nostalgia mixed with new things to explore and blocks to build with every time I come back to it. If I want it to feel just like how it did when I was a kid, nobody is stopping me from selecting 1.7 from the launcher. Microsoft isn't always going to make the best choices for Minecraft, but I really dont think that allowing musicians other than C418 to contribute to the soundtrack is *destroying* the game. It's just...different. The reasons are dumb, but change in itself is not bad.
@@LilChuunosuke But on the other hand, a lot of people come back to it for the nostalgia. I remember feeling very put off by opening minecraft again after multiple years of not playing, and getting the new music blasted in my face. It's the annoying thing of live service games: everything has to continuously be updated, instead of just allowing people to easily experience the game as-is. If they had put a nostalgia switch in the menu to only keep the music to ambient (keeping the new music in music disks, but the main themes old), it'd be a different story in my opinion.
@nanderv the problem with the nostalgia switch is that everyone is nostalgic for a different era. Some are for alpha, for me it's 1.9.1. I still remember people complaining that horses felt too much like a mod, but the first time i ever played on PC was literal days before they were added, so I'm not really nostalgic for a minecraft without them. And they sorta *do* have one in the sense that you can quite literally go into the launcher and play any version of Minecraft you want. You can pick which version is your favorite and play that forever.
Lena Raine has been doing brilliantly so far, both pigstep and other side are generally regarded as some of the best music disks in the game. I only wish we could still have C418 doing some work on it as well.
I used to have music turned off, for years. One day a mod I was playing with dropped a music disc, which had Mice on Venus. I *cried* listening to it. Reminded me of the days on the Xbox 360 tutorial worlds, before they disabled achievements on them. We built a treehouse in the starting area of one, and mined out Stampy's pool for iron in another. Good times. The new songs don't do that for me. I use a resource pack to disable them.
honestly, i don't care if the music disks are very different. They're music disks, i think that's kind of their point. Pigstep never plays naturally, you need to play it via the jukebox
Great video, but as far as I’m aware C418s music is not exclusive to any biomes. The only exceptions are songs specifically made for the nether, end, or creative mode. I believe all the songs have equal chance to play in their respective dimension/game mode.
When I watch videos like this I wish copyright restrictions were less strict. I hear references be made to music I either cannot remember or do not know and feel like Im missing a lot of the points being made. Having clips of the music added in would have helped a lot, but I get why its not done. It is difficult to avoid demonetization or strikes. ❤
Back when Minecraft Pocket edition was first released it didn't have a soundtrack in it yet, so i purchased one of c418s songs and played it while playing pocket edition for the first time. It was that good. Best memories of my life.
There's a good reason for Microsoft wanting to have the full rights to the music within their games: Licensing issues further down the line. Even though we all doubt that C418 would pull out of his licensing agreement with them for Minecraft, they cannot use his music in any other spinoff game because it is not licensed for those. So they HAD to have new songs created which could tie the IPs together. Furthermore, licensing problems with music are the number one reason why older games get pulled from digital storefronts. It happened to GTA3 (which has been re-uploaded with some audio tracks removed), it has happened to Spec Ops: The Line, and many more games. Sometimes the publisher can renew a license, but a lot of times the music licenses are time-based and will run out eventually - and often the publishers then say "nah, it's not worth the money anymore" and rather pull the game from storefronts. If the publisher owns the rights to use the tracks within the game indefinitely, this cannot happen. Also, creating a piece for a specific software is generally considered normal in the business world. If it is a piece with a high enough "creative value", at least in most of Europe the creator always retains the "creators rights" to the piece, i.e. he will often still be recognized as the creator by name etc... even if it was made as a result of a work contract. This can lead to wobbly legal situations like UK companies having to shut down fanmade creations from Germany, because the makers could not transfer those "creator rights" to the UK company (impossible by German Law, if you create something you are the "Urheber" by default if it wasn't part of a contract to create this specific thing for a company while under salary). But in the UK, if you allow others to "use" your IP in a different field to create something, you might lose the right to forbid further people or companies from creating more in that regard, even if they charge money for it. So if GW back in the past before they made videos/movies would allow a fan-film from Germany to use their Warhammer IP, then they might open the floodgates for third parties to produce Warhammer TV shows and movies without having the legal rights to stop them anymore. And this brings us back full circle to the C418-situation. Microsoft is acutely aware of the problems that licensed music can create further down the line, and they were fixated on not letting this problem grow any further. Imagine if they continued to have C418 create music for Minecraft under the same licensing model, but lets say in 3-4 years he decides: Nah, I don't like the latest update, I don't want to extend my contract anymore. They would then have a short timeframe to replace ALL of the music, and this would create a huge backlash both ways. So they are acting pretty smart in my book. Introducing new music piece by piece which is tied ingame to specific situations/biomes, the older tracks will still play on random in between, but not as often anymore (because there is simply more and more music in the game now so each track gets played less). You still get that ping of nostalgia when one of the older tracks plays, but you are also hearing the new ones and slowly get used to them.
Man this video hit different 12 years after starting to play this game. The sands of time have passed and left us in its wake. hope this channel gets big this was really well made!
Imagine what C418 would have cooked up for the Deep Dark. Would have given everyone chills, for sure. Also otherside is one of the few Lena tracks that fit the overworld, will not tolerate slander. Anyways, good documentary and I’m subscribing.
When i was making music for Create: Astral, i tried my best to give it a simple feel that could allow the tracks to be background tracks rather than the main focus. I had simple, repeating melodies, and even full-on ambient pieces. Our players loved the soundtrack. Now, i started making music for another minecraft modpack, and truth be told, it's just not the same. There've been times where i've sent like 5 tracks in a row only for the developer to tell me it's "not catchy enough" or "too simple". Kinda paints the picture here i feel like. Also, only 4k subs? Goddamn, it felt like you have so much more, great work on the video!!!
@@SypherMinecraft I’ve been playing Minecraft since beta 1.5 and I like the songs the new artists have made and of course the original. When a new song is made and is for a music disk I expect something different and fortunately not jarring. When new music is coming I mostly worry about the ambient music that plays in the background where the music is there but not the focus of what’s going on what I personally about is with all the recent updates being about adventure/exploration that future music will no longer be calm ambient music and more grand think Breath of the Wild for an example. That’s what concerns me the most change is good especially to keep the game going but I hope we don’t lose the ambient music entirely and we’re left with something that sounds like a different game’s OST was just slapped onto Minecraft or music that’s from the uncanny valley so close but something is just off.
To me, it should have been all of them together. C418 produced music that got you lost in whatever moment you were in, in the world you generated, explored, developed, and created as your own. Lena Raine put the energy into it, and our third guy put another feel into the game. They should have kept C418 as the guy to keep producing those tracks while the others produced tracks to cover other parts in what is now a more complex game…
I think it's one thing about conveying a point of view, but starting a video with "You will never want to touch Minecraft again" when it's not the players that are at fault or even care neccesairly, it's a bit pushing it regardless of opinion on C418's music and the current one.
I mean tbh I understand that decision. It’s what Mr beast has created now a days you need to hook ur viewer with in the first sentence of the video. Thus saying something obnoxious that makes the viewer hooked. Sad reality but it made the video go “viral”
You really played this up more as a huge problem than it really is. C418 licensed his music to Notch to gain exposure and a portfolio Microsoft was wanting to buy his music and he said No. This disagreement between the two parties has lead to other music artists adding music to the game since Microsoft can't just add nothing to their updates.
I feel like the main difference between the new music and C418's music is the use of recodings of intruments irl instead of all digital and what not and thats probably what gives that natural nostalgia and emotional feel.
I unironically still listen to the old music playlist on spotify. The nostalgia that gives me is beyond this earth, and often even made me shed a tear.
Just gonna add some context here from parts i missed out! I'm seeing a lot of back and forward with people saying music is good/bad cause reason a) and b) but keep in mind I'm a human with opinions lmao. I studied music for 4 years and am outlining observations that I kind of came to learn would effect the general public. Hense the split between pro nostalgia and pro Change :). Loving seeing the opinions tho and keep me coming!
Excited to see more content from your channel- I hope my comment didn't seem like an attack, its just my viewpoint on the situation since a lot of it is subjective
I agree that there is a divide between nostalgia and the ones who apreciate the change when it comes to the minecraft soundtrack and I in fact did not study music, so I can't argue about music on the same level as you. Still, I think that the anyone who listens to music can say something about how it makes them feel and even if they can't pinpoint where a certain difference between two pieces of music lies, they can tell if they feel different about two pieces of music or not. I think that this divide that youve shown in this video is portrayed in a more extreme way, than it should be... Maybe I interpreted the "If you hear the whole reason, you'll never touch minecraft again" from the intro too seriously, but I still got some points to criticize (not hate), so I wrote a comment somewhere down in this comment section...
@BarnesReal another thing I noticed is the frequent use of the word "wrong" to describe more recent minecraft music. Using language like this to describe something as subjective as music can be polarising. I really enjoyed the video and appreciate the massive amount of work that went into it, but in the future maybe take into consideration the slightly negative tone of your videos. Looking forward to the future of your channel!
To be honest, I don't mind the new composers but c418's music is the one I return for. As an example, I played for over 2 hours yesterday and only got Lena Raine and Aaron Cherovs music tracks. Sometimes getting the same ones back to back. And I've found this a lot over the last few months when I've played. It almost always starts when I load in with the same Lena Raine track. I don't know if it's something to do with having daylight cycle off, as I like creative building and struggle to see my switch even on full brightness. But it just felt more hollow for it. I just want some of the old tracks mixed in or ideally the other way round.
While I agree that Microsoft's greed is a problem in the development of Minecraft I feel there's a bit too much hostility towards the other artists and their work in the game. I have truly liked all of the new OST, and while it's a shame that those artists don't own the rights to their works, it doesn't feel right to direct any amount of blame at them. Otherwise I enjoyed the video, very well researched/put together and I liked the cycling cast of narrators!
I'd say it's all good music, but not a good fit. That being said, I'm still salty about the adventure update for a similar reason, and that was before Microsoft's takeover, so not sure if my opinion is worth anything.
I don't like most of the new tracks, they sound off and out-of-place. But that doesn't upset me, what pisses me off is that this is a wildly easy fix. Why isn't there just a settings tab where you can disable whatever tracks naturally play in your world? Why isn't anyone asking for this?
all opinions are valid, but im surprised to hear someone going so far as to call them garbage. im hearing mostly good things about them. theres definitely some nostalgia at work for alot of these folks. i kinda feel like its an objective fact that evry new song in trails and tails is better then , for instance, droopy likes your face lol @@Helperbot-2000
I love C418’s music, it shaped my childhood and is very important to me, but I think it’s unfair to compare Lena Raine (or any of the other composers) to him. They’re entirely seperate people with unique styles and personalities, so of course it’s gonna be different. I don’t think they “tried and failed” to replicate him, they just injected their own styles into the soundtrack, which provides a larger scope of emotion to the game. Besides, Minecraft is all about creating whatever you want, so it’s okay for the music to be diverse. That’s my opinion, anyway ❤
Lena Raine didn't try to replicate C418 at all. Honestly, just listen to the Celeste OST, specifically "Quiet and Falling". You'll immediately notice that they fit very well with Lena's Nether tracks almost interchangably. You could easily slot the nether Nether Tracks into Celeste and Celeste tracks into the nether and it wouldn't feel out of place. Which IMO shows just how good of a composer Lena is, being able to make good music in her own identity.
@@rheokalyke367 Yup, couldn’t agree more. And that’s why I think the expectation that the community put on Lena to replace C418 was very unrealistic. I mean, she technically took his place as the main composer, but people were acting like they wanted her to emulate his style or something, which wouldn’t have worked and probably would’ve been weird. I’m totally okay with people disliking her songs in the Minecraft soundtrack, it’s just this particular critique of her music that feels misguided to me.
the same reason any company takes ANY risk or adds any "new" content at all: to change it up/introduce new consumable content/make a profit. to you, it seems like a downgrade, but to many people and Microsoft itself, it wasnt a "downgrade" or a "settle-for-less" scenario, even if you feel that's the case@@BenStro
This video is so clearly based mainly on totally fabricated drama. Such a small minority of people actually flat-out hate the new music (though they've clearly found this video lol), and I'm actually yet to come across a single person who is actually opposed to C418 making more music. These nostalgia and change teams and completely imagined. The newer musicians have created to music that is completely within the style of the original tracks, and in efforts to prove otherwise this video comes across as extremely dishonest by comparing the newer music discs to the older ambient soundtrack. Please take a listen to cat and chirp and the rest of the original discs. They are not ambient. Saddens me that so many people will blindly hate people and their art just because it's marginally novel. Be mad at Mojang for their scummy corporate choices, not the musicians and not their music.
Im fine with change and introducing new composers, but the right move would've been to put them alongside c418, not ostracize him for seemingly no reason, that was categorically the wrong decision
I know the feeling, and thats why I have been literally studying his minecraft songs and every other song he ever made since Covid. I only play piano and I love creating melodies that are just like C418. I want to not replace him, but imitate his style strongly and give the same musical feeling that C418 had given so many others. I haven't been able to create a full album but I do have a plan... sort of I want to recreate every different type of minecraft song like one from the nether, the overworld, the music discs, and so on Progress is slow but patience will help me make something at least decent..
While I like the new music, I did find it curious why C418 wasn't being brought back on. I think the best case scenario would have been the new composer and C418 to collaborate together on Minecraft soundtrack.
I actually really like that they're getting other artists to make music for Minecraft. The way I see it, Minecraft is a community game, so allowing its community to make music for it is a beautiful thing. Plus, I actually think lena raine did an excellent job composing her tracks. One of my personal favorites of hers is Aerie. It's beautifully sad, yet calm and even nostalgic, in a way. Heck, even A Familiar Room by Aaron Cherof and Comforting Memories by Kumi Tanioka are both beautiful tracks with a similar feeling to them. C418 had a gift, but he wasn't the only one.
This is super well made!! The editing and voice over are so fitting! I also really appreciate the clips of old nostalgic worlds (Stampy's Lovely World, DanTDM's lab, popular servers that hold many good memories) I had to double take because I was not expecting that nostalgia hit. Honestly, with the music of Minecraft, I'm not opposed to change (i'm more opposed to the big mechanics changes). I actually quite like the new discs. I just have one request: keep the overworld's original biome music. And yeah... Minecraft has changed so much...
Lena's other tracks (the ones that aren't on the discs) actually fit fairly well with the vibe C418 set up. It's slightly different, but I feel like that's just a natural evolution of the music with the game as a whole. Songs like Aerie and Infinite Amethyst have a relaxed mellow vibe that C418 all but paved the way for, and don't feel out of place whatsoever
I would still argue that Lena simply does not know how to make ambient music to the same degree that C418 did. I don't have an issue with the evolution of the sound (Wending and Left to Bloom are actually as close to what I can imagine "new" minecraft music being and I enjoy it) but I still think that it dwells in the forefront far too much to fit what we've come to expect from minecraft's music. I think it draws far too much attention to itself during gameplay when it should really just be background music that you almost forget is there
@@MnemonicHeadTrip I'll concede that point. Honestly I don't mind her music being more openly present, especially since the first set of music she did was for the nether update, and it helps the atmosphere feel strange compared to the very background music of the overworld
It's because discs literally are there to stand out. I don't put a jukebox in the room for ambient music. C418 always sucked so hard at discs and I had mods specifically for music discs back then. I want to play music in my tedious chest sorting room to make it less tedious.
Great job on the video! I definitely disagree on a couple points, especially the Lena Raine segment- her work on Celeste brings out the same kind of emotion from me as the Minecraft soundtrack, and I think she did a great job with Pigstep. More importantly, I can't believe this only has 250 views. This long form was amazing, you've earned yourself a sub.
Completely valid! I tried to be as unbiased as I could be from the extracts that where out there by real composers as I was one my self for a while but always love to see other perspectives!
the thing is that you can never grow tired od c418's music (in my opinion) and these new tracks they release are kinda....idk i listen to them few times and think well fine but I dont't want to hear them on repeat and when I play I sometimes turn off in game music and play alpha or beta album on spotify (it really depends on my mood, sometimes I don't mind these new tracks) its so well made I like falling asleep to it to the point that he was my 5th autor on wrapped LOL maybe its because I grew up with his music and it gives me comforting and nostalgic feelings
Thats great that you like c418s music (I wish I did), but I never enjoyed it myself When I was very little I found it boring and simple, so I would alwaya play with the music off (that's why I don't have any nostalgic ties to the music) hence why I still dont enjoy it to this day. I do, however prefer the newer songs because they feel fresher
I think pigstep was good. It shook up the music discs in a good way, along with being completely optional because it's a music disc. It works real well as a ONE time thing. By that I mean no others like it. Good video 👍
I don't like how this video tries to validate people pitting C418 and Lena against each other. Lena creating music for the game doesn't decrease the value or impact of C418's music. Nor does c418's irreplaceable style dimish the value of Lena's contributions. The enemy here is Microsoft slowly morphing Minecraft over the years. Stop trying to act like individual artists trying something different is a bad thing. It's Microsoft's fault for making C418 leaves, not these new artists. I share the frustration over C418's treatment, but dragging other artists into the issue is just immature.
@@JustaRandomDunceIf you used your noggin, you’d realise that Barnes has been hearting comments like this because they are valid critiques. He’s been doing it with replies too, replying to them as well in a polite manner.
saying that C418's sound IS MINECRAFT and that the other artist's music doesn't fit, isn't some insult. That's entirely up to the customer to decide for themselves. Talk about being sensitive...
He never did. You're just a Lena fan boy who can't handle criticism against her. Fact is, they were in competition, at least as far as Mojang was concerned, whether you like it or not. And players preferred C418. Stop trying to shed your childish anger by aiming at someone doing nothing but documenting the process. He didn't criticize individual artists in any way, just their music. Which he is more than allowed to have an opinion on.
The new music is amazing. I love pigstep, as different as it is from the rest. Lena Raine is clearly a great composer. And Pigstep works, only because it's a music disc rather than ambiance. When Lena does ambiance properly, she does it amazingly. *But* C418's music just... *Is* Minecraft. The new music is great, but c418 just... Iconic. Edit: Also, mentioning Sam Åberg's 5 in a video is... Weird. Like you said, it exists for it's mystery, not music. It's like questioning why that horror disc isn't musical.
thanks for putting this documentary together. I loved it, the topic made me so curious the whole time. But to give you an honest feedback as well there were also many parts in the video that felt being repeating over and over again and intentionally starched.
Bro amazing video keep it up! The topic was actually on my mind as I feel the newer music for the game distracts me way too much, something the C418 Soundtracks didn’t and they just feel way too on the nose
"...the promise of emitting an emotion that had the ability to hold memories -- every artist needs to prove that they can put feelings in their own songs, without forcefully implying what emotions should be played; but rather, allowing the players themselves to put meaning behind the music" Extremely well put
Love this video, I hope all the work put into it pays off! While I cant say that I'm nostalgic for the old music as I have only been playing for about 6 years (I'm fairly young), I will say that the new tracks hit differently to the traditional C418 ones. They are frankly just louder and more intense. All in all, I love the new music, but wish that the themes and feel of the old music was still prevalent. It just isn't.
Amazing video! I agree with many of the points you made, especially the point about the music going from ambient to storytelling. I took a ~5-year break from Minecraft and when I played again it was actually Modded Minecraft so when I started to hear new music tracks that stood out negatively I assumed they were from a mod but instead, it was new music that had been added to the game since I last played. Songs like "Pigstep" and "Otherside," which I guess many new players love, sound very unfitting to me and made me turn off the music multiple times. Don't get me wrong, many of the other tracks by Lena Raine and the other artists are actually great; it's just those two that always stand out negatively to me.
@@ooccoo1 Because the music doesn't fit the game... if that's the case, I turn off the music and start a playlist instead. It does not matter if it is a music disc or whatever, I do not want the music to ruin the game experience.
@k11n Just don't play those music discs? Regardless, even C418's music discs never really fit as an ambient soundtrack to Minecraft, and that's because they never were intended to be. They're completely optional and they act more as their own stand-alone pieces of music that only play if the player intentionally puts them in a jukebox.
@k11n I'm well aware that her tracks play in the background normally as well, but I was specifically talking about the music discs pigstep and otherside. Even you acknowledged this... "It does not matter if it is a music disc or whatever".
I believe the new soundtrack, pigstep, was an improvement, it sort of captures the concept of change, like when I think of Minecraft, I think old minecraft, and when you listen to pigstep it feels new, and different, but you can still go back to the old soundtracks C418 produced.
Ooooh, that’s why I don’t get the same emotional feeling playing the game as I used to. Hearing those melodies again… that feeling came flooding back to me
This needs to be common knowledge in the Minecraft Community. If we could get some huge streamers like Philza, Grian, Captain Sparklez and many others talking about this issue, things could change faster than we think. Daniel Rosenfield is a legend, and we could only wish that he’d come back, even if Micro$oft allows for that.
Gareth Coker is, to me as good as C418. His music in ark gives the same emotional feeling i get when playing minecraft but at the same time, it's very different. C418 can not be replaced and it's really sad mojang didn't realize that. Lena Raine also made a great soundtrack, but it doesn't belong in minecraft. C418's music is the essence of minecraft. It can't be replaced
I do like Pigstep, but it really only works because it's different. It's something unique built on the foundations of what came before, but without that foundation, it frankly wouldn't be remarkable. It's like the garnish on a cocktail or the pickle that comes with your sandwich-something different that adds to the experience, but is only truly special in its greater context. I wouldn't, however, want any more tracks like it.
I really love the songs from the new artists, "firebugs" being one of my favorites. But C418 has an irreplaceable style, his ambient music filled my childhood and shaped the type of music I make and listen to today. I prefer his music over the modern stuff because it simultaneously has the ability to slip into the background while you're playing or gaming, but then consume you once you take a step away to see your finished build, to look over the landscape, to fill the silence... it is beautiful. Somehow it is beautiful, melancholic, cheerful, and every emotion in between all at once. Somehow despite not being overwhelmingly complex, it reaches into your heart and pulls at a string of emotions that are more complex than the simple melody itself.
Not gonna lie, every single minecraft "news" i see it all rounds up to: if Notch hadnt sold minecraft to microsoft, none of these problems would have been a thing, from the cutting of C418, to Mob Votes (and its rigging), and to useless or unasked features and ruining of features that were proven to work, microsoft is the weight that restricts mojand from making minecraft, well minecraft, from security flaws, to ruining the game for others and other things
Microsoft literally do this with everything they acquire; they did it with Github it's now getting worse and worse in a slow fashion am inclined to think microsoft is genuinely destroying this stuff and masking it under game pass presentation ; it's getting that bad in my perspective. there's this saying that people talk about microsoft something along the lines of they acquire, they change and they destroy.
This is a huge letdown for Minecraft. C418s music is such an important part of the game. His tracks are composed so well and it fits the atmosphere perfectly. There is just so much emotion and meaning in every track and the game would be incomplete without it. No one has or ever will meet his level of talent and perfection.
I think it s actually good that mc s newest versions have this very rich side with a lot of features etc ( also this type of music ) and still be able to play the older versions with this simple and nostalgic side, features ( same thing with music ) like the very clever thing mc did was to have differents versions with different types of dynamic or amount of features, it s like mc is always adapting to different people demanding big dynamic and a lot of features but still able to answer to people demanding the same dynamic etc than before, at mc s simple dynamic.
Honestly good for C418 for keeping the rights to his music. Whenever you produce anything working under someone you don't hold the rights and it always felt so unfair to me.
@user-in8qh3zf9d sure which is why its always better to work for yourself.
@user-in8qh3zf9d Thankfully not every legal system encompasses your view. Creative work is protected even against employer leeches
That's only BECAUSE you are so USED to the old songs. The new songs definitely do fit the newer tone of Minecraft.
@@Key-Knight87Yeah, even then I love all of the songs in minecraft. New and old.
Songs. @@Key-Knight87
It's also a case of.
@@Key-Knight87nah. I havent heard a single C418 track in my new survival world at all and Ive been playing it for ab a week…

@@thesunflowerseedenthusiast2481 to be fair it was more of a force out, as they started to replace his songs and Microsoft did not want to find a middle ground
For what little direction he was given, C418 did produce some amazingly memorable music for Minecraft.
Man.. This is really sad, c418's tracks truly are burned into the fond memories of playing minecraft back in the days. Truly a historical culture defining piece of art, C418 may have been replaced due to greed, but he is deeply rooted in our minds and we won't forget his contributions.
Well put, exactly what i thought. ❤
I am completely against the Idea of picking people into two categories, like "team change vs nostalgia". You can both have C418 doing the background soundtrack while new musicians trickle their music and art into music discs or new dimension themes
Lena Raine's music honestly is perfect for the Nether. It perfectly fits the mysterious yet melancholic vibes of that dimension.
THIS THUMBNAIL LOOKS MIGHTY FAMILIER.....
I thought so too lol
I used to have music turned off, for years. One day a mod I was playing with dropped a music disc, which had Mice on Venus. I *cried* listening to it. Reminded me of the days on the Xbox 360 tutorial worlds, before they disabled achievements on them. We built a treehouse in the starting area of one, and mined out Stampy's pool for iron in another. Good times. The new songs don't do that for me. I use a resource pack to disable them.
honestly, i don't care if the music disks are very different. They're music disks, i think that's kind of their point.

@@E4S65 bruh, I didn't know what Spotify was back then. I just had the free version of Pandora. Good for you though, It's cool you could do that.

@@timsudmeier6482 yeah that was mainly just a hook to keep people watching, add some shock factor to the intro to keep em going :)
This music with a kind British man making wonderful buildings with colorful wool was my entire childhood.
This does not make me want to quit playing Minecraft, it just makes me want to hear the c418 soundtrack even more.
All animosity should be towards microsoft, I agree
I'd say it's all good music, but not a good fit.
That being said, I'm still salty about the adventure update for a similar reason, and that was before Microsoft's takeover, so not sure if my opinion is worth anything.
I don't like most of the new tracks, they sound off and out-of-place. But that doesn't upset me, what pisses me off is that this is a wildly easy fix.
Why isn't there just a settings tab where you can disable whatever tracks naturally play in your world? Why isn't anyone asking for this?
well yeah, its not their fault, but unrelated to that their music is garbage in comparison
all opinions are valid, but im surprised to hear someone going so far as to call them garbage. im hearing mostly good things about them. theres definitely some nostalgia at work for alot of these folks. i kinda feel like its an objective fact that evry new song in trails and tails is better then , for instance, droopy likes your face lol @@Helperbot-2000
I’m totally okay with people disliking her songs in the Minecraft soundtrack, it’s just this particular critique of her music that feels misguided to me.
you are wrong but thats ok

the same reason any company takes ANY risk or adds any "new" content at all: to change it up/introduce new consumable content/make a profit. to you, it seems like a downgrade, but to many people and Microsoft itself, it wasnt a "downgrade" or a "settle-for-less" scenario, even if you feel that's the case@@BenStro
in my opinion the music discs can stay and ambiance should be only made by c418
I haven't been able to create a full album but I do have a plan... sort of
I want to recreate every different type of minecraft song like one from the nether, the overworld, the music discs, and so on
Progress is slow but patience will help me make something at least decent..
While I like the new music, I did find it curious why C418 wasn't being brought back on. I think the best case scenario would have been the new composer and C418 to collaborate together on Minecraft soundtrack.
Why would he need to collaborate? He does better work than anyone else for the game so far
C418 funeral will be the saddest funeral in history.
Found this video searching for a way to disable all new songs and only have the old music play
Thanks for inviting me to voiceover for this!
Microsoft has been doing a bang-up job of ruining games lately. Way to freaking go, MS!
Just came back to minecraft, used to play on my xbox360. Ever since I found pigstep disc. I put it in the juiebox when I get back to my base.
No, none of them do. they are too upbeat. it's like putting a pop band in a classic orchestra concert
It's because discs literally are there to stand out. I don't put a jukebox in the room for ambient music. C418 always sucked so hard at discs and I had mods specifically for music discs back then. I want to play music in my tedious chest sorting room to make it less tedious.
@@Dragondude1 That's not how I'd describe the nether music. You're just forcing your view of the artist onto it
Lena raine isnt danels ”opponent” she was just contracted to also make music. Which she did well. Lena and daniel even follow each other
i assumed that part of the video was metaphorical and not literal.

He probably meant in terms of business or in the eyes of Microsoft. He's not saying they hate each other.
ah, nostalgia is a wonderful thing
no matter what is added to the game, it always feels "too different"
i play with too many mods to ever listen to the of soundtrack, but I still fall asleep to c418's soundtrack at night
I tried to be as unbiased as I could be from the extracts that where out there by real composers as I was one my self for a while but always love to see other perspectives!
the thing is that you can never grow tired od c418's music (in my opinion) and these new tracks they release are kinda....idk i listen to them few times and think well fine but I dont't want to hear them on repeat and when I play I sometimes turn off in game music and play alpha or beta album on spotify (it really depends on my mood, sometimes I don't mind these new tracks)
its so well made I like falling asleep to it to the point that he was my 5th autor on wrapped LOL
maybe its because I grew up with his music and it gives me comforting and nostalgic feelings
Thats great that you like c418s music (I wish I did), but I never enjoyed it myself
When I was very little I found it boring and simple, so I would alwaya play with the music off (that's why I don't have any nostalgic ties to the music) hence why I still dont enjoy it to this day. I do, however prefer the newer songs because they feel fresher
@@mouthwaterin If you like the new ones, you'd love space exploration games
I think pigstep was good. It shook up the music discs in a good way, along with being completely optional because it's a music disc. It works real well as a ONE time thing. By that I mean no others like it. Good video 👍
When I get a cracked version of Minecraft I have no regrets considering the company that OWNS it.
It is so hard to willingly listen to sweden (by itself when not playing) without getting sad, EVEN back then

That's because it's the year 2023 and a very low amount of people laugh at it nowdays
@maybedasecondcommenter I still laugh at it
I don't like how this video tries to validate people pitting C418 and Lena against each other.
Imagine mindlessly hearting comments 💀💀💀
Which he is more than allowed to have an opinion on.

well it is a popular video now lol
@@gabsol7397 Then I'd be happy for the creator.
The problem with sounds track is it force you to acknowledge it instead of just hearing it in the background
thanks for putting this documentary together. I loved it, the topic made me so curious the whole time. But to give you an honest feedback as well there were also many parts in the video that felt being repeating over and over again and intentionally starched.
Little detail but I love the player skin in this video, the 7 years of server data on the inner leg is such a neat nod.
is this skin available somewhere?
Tbh a lot of the new overworld music sounds like it came straight out of the Twilight Forest mod
All this new music just doesn’t fit Minecraft
YOOOO you bring me nostalgia with the “Sypher” name and the “Bill cipher” logo
Bro amazing video keep it up! The topic was actually on my mind as I feel the newer music for the game distracts me way too much, something the C418 Soundtracks didn’t and they just feel way too on the nose
Absolutely. As much as the new music is great and all, the ambient soundtrack it once was isn’t the same anymore 👀
"...the promise of emitting an emotion that had the ability to hold memories -- every artist needs to prove that they can put feelings in their own songs, without forcefully implying what emotions should be played; but rather, allowing the players themselves to put meaning behind the music"
Extremely well put
Love this video, I hope all the work put into it pays off!
While I cant say that I'm nostalgic for the old music as I have only been playing for about 6 years (I'm fairly young), I will say that the new tracks hit differently to the traditional C418 ones. They are frankly just louder and more intense. All in all, I love the new music, but wish that the themes and feel of the old music was still prevalent. It just isn't.
This feels like if cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 was music tones and Chester got what he wanted
Also, I believe Aaron Cherof did an astounding job. It's an astounding mix of Lena's and C418's music creation styles.
Pigstep and Otherside are music discs. They only play if you want them too. Why would you need to turn off the game's music?
@@ooccoo1 Because the music doesn't fit the game... if that's the case, I turn off the music and start a playlist instead. It does not matter if it is a music disc or whatever, I do not want the music to ruin the game experience.
@k11n Just don't play those music discs? Regardless, even C418's music discs never really fit as an ambient soundtrack to Minecraft, and that's because they never were intended to be. They're completely optional and they act more as their own stand-alone pieces of music that only play if the player intentionally puts them in a jukebox.
@@ooccoo1 who talk about music disc? You know that her tracks are in the normal background as well...
@k11n I'm well aware that her tracks play in the background normally as well, but I was specifically talking about the music discs pigstep and otherside. Even you acknowledged this... "It does not matter if it is a music disc or whatever".
Meraki's thumbnail is looking really great on your video!
Hearing those melodies again… that feeling came flooding back to me
Holy sh*t! this is so well made, you genuinely need more views!
I can’t believe you called the Minecraft story mode soundtrack “overdone” and “lackluster”…
I hate the fact that his songs barely play in survival now
I have a fix for that, it's Classic Reimagined 10, this resource pack disables non-C418 music without the need of Optifine
@@MrGlitchDogePE yeah i use it, but it also makes it so music plays less often too sadly
