- Psalm 89 is really the death blow to the human view of Psalm 82. And the human view of a Divine Council. Because the language is the same as in Psalm 82. There are no idols ruling from the skies in a council. There are no Jewish elders ruling from the skies or in the skies in a council. Okay, this is patently absurd. And yet you will see this a lot in the academic discussion. Check this out!

Pls I need help with John 10:35
This might help : In John 10 :24, the Jews demand to know if Jesus is the promised messiah. Jesus points out that he has told them but they refuse to believe. (v25). He explains that they are not his sheep and so will not get everlasting life (v 26-28) He is completely at one with the Father.
At this point, the Jews pick up stones to stone him. Jesus asks why. The Jews, who do not understand him - or want to understand who he is - (v6) say that Jesus is claiming to be a God/God. (v33) Please notice that it is the misunderstanding Jews who make this claim and Jesus explicitly denies being God but says he is God's son.(v36).
Jesus uses Psalm 82 :6 to show that others such as Judges / angels are called gods in th Bible that they claim to believe , and yet they are charging him with blasphemy because he , who is sent from God, claims to be God's Son.. He says that even if they don't believe him, they should surely believe the works he has shown.((37-39).
This passage proves the OPPOSITE to what many claim. It was not Jesus who claimed to be a God/God- it was his opponents who refused to believe and recognise his works. Jesus actually rejects the claim that he is God and Jesus tells us that he is God's Son.
@kgkojo829 seek Acts 17:28-29. In Greek, it says we are the genos of God. Genos means race, family, or kind.
The Bible says we are elohim or the race of gods, just not with the same glory or intelligence of God Father and Jesus. We are his children or less than him in glory, we are elohim children of the most High.

Jesus identifies them as humans when He used verse 6 of psalm 82 to answer those who accused Him of blasphemy for saying that He is the Son of God.

This is one of the things I disagree with Mike Winger on. Dr Heiser shows that from the text it couldn't be talking about human judges. It's not a major issue but it's weird to me Winger thinks it's about human judges I don't see how you can pull that from the text in Psalm 82.
I would also suggest you check out Psalm 58 and the differences in the KJV and the ESV. It is basically the same kind of scene, only they are called men directly in KJV.

Mike Winger, while he seems like a stand up guy, is not a scholar or theologian. He’s a pastor and that seems to be his better suited role. But when it comes to theology and letting scripture speak for itself, more often than not, his isegesis and exegesis are cringe worthy.

Jesus quoted Psalms 82:6 to the religious leaders. Compare the two verses side by side for understanding.

What does this mean?
'God' basically means 'Authority'.
This is why God recognizes other Gods but says there is only one God. There are many in position of authority over others but there is one Most High Authority they should all obey and follow and are accountable to- That's The Most High God's Authority.

So he's not claiming to be God of the OT.
He's only quoting what God said in the OT when he says "I said".
Jesus was only saying he is the SON of God and that they themselves are recognized as God's and can't be mad at him for simply saying he is the son of God.
After Christ's resurrection does he claim "All authority in heaven and earth has been given him". (Matthew 28:18)
It would have been a sin for Christ to take Authority before it was officially given to him. If he did so then his sacrifice would have not counted for our sins.

If there are other(lesser) gods then Yahweh isn't the only God, He would then belong to a pantheon.

Thank you for the insight. Ps.82 was always a difficult one to wrap my head around. In light of Ps.89 and someone teaching clearly and methodically what the Word says, it makes more sense.
What he is teaching is false. Interesting that he completely ignores how Jesus quoted this scripture. Jesus was not comparing Himself to angelic beings when quoting this scriptures. And it is not the responsibility of angels to defend the poor and needy. Or to give justice to widows and orphans. There is no written Law for angels. The word of God came to men; not to angels. Read the Law of Moses. The “gods” are indeed the judges of Israel.
@@TheRgordon16 point taken. I agree that the text does not address angels but seeing it from a different perspective (even if it goes against the grain of what I believe), helps me not to be dogmatic about secondary issues, to be open to discussion and learning as I'm not always right.
Regarding Jesus' quoting this text, what was the tone and context? Who was he addressing? Was He commending or condemning them?

Notice what they said to our Lord. They said they wanted to stone Him because He was a MAN trying to make Himself equal with God. And notice what the Lord did. He quoted Psalms 82. Remember they accused Him of blasphemy because He said He and the Father were One. Jesus was in perfect fellowship with the Father. He was sinless and obedient to the word of God. And to prove His perfect relationship with the Father, He was able to perform many miracles by the power of God. Despite being a “man” (though He was God in the flesh. Yet as Philippians says He made Himself of no reputation and took upon himself the form of a servant and became a man. Which means He did nothing as God but was empowered by the Holy Spirit) there was nothing wrong with Him saying He was God’s Son. And to prove His point He quoted Psalms 82. “Is it not written in YOUR LAW ‘I said ye are gods’? If He called THEM ‘gods’ UNTO WHO THE WORD OF GOD CAME and the scriptures cannot be broken…”
Who are “THEM”? Are they not the ones UNTO WHO THE WORD OF GOD CAME? And to whom did the word of God go? Was it not in THEIR Law? Now. Consider what God commanded the people of Israel to do in THEIR Law (which was God’s Law).

There are many more scriptures where the Lord commands Israel to provide justice and protection to the poor and needy and to widows and orphans. Now it was Israel’s responsibility to do all these things; not angels! And when the Lord gave men the power to execute judgement he called them ‘gods’. “And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.”

The word “gods” in this verse means JUDGES. The rulers of Israel
So in the Law of Moses men are referred to as ‘gods’ And in Psalms 82 the Lord says “I have said ye are gods” And notice what else he says “And all of you CHILDREN of the Most High”

Nowhere are angels called “children” of God. They are called sons of God. There is a difference. Children denotes immature adolescents. Son represents maturity. So we see in the Law of Moses men are called both ‘gods’ and ‘children of God’. And yet despite being elevated to this level of honor, they did not keep God’s Law.
Jesus was saying. If God called flawed human beings “gods”. Why are you angry with me for saying I am God’s Son?? A MAN that has never sinned and have kept the Word of God. Jesus was not comparing Himself to angels. He was comparing Himself to sinful men. He was not condemning them but educating them. Again, notice in this video he does not spend any significant time discussing what Jesus said. This brother is more interested in wild imaginary sci fi fantasies than what the scriptures really says.

What kind of a statement is this? We know judges of the earth die and why is Elohim reminding them that they shall die like men?
Critical thinking skills aren't taught anymore. Most are just taught what to think, not how to think. We need new schools that teach skills necessary for proper cognitive development, communication, and relational skills, etc... but most importantly, how to study God's Word!

Dr Heiser, we would love to see you do a video on the Greek word “epiousion” as found in the Lord’s Prayer, which has been omitted in the West. It seems to relate to the idea of “bread from heaven” and manna; indicating the “daily bread” really means supernatural nourishment every day. Could relate to your idea of having to daily choose to
follow Christ.
It was only omitted in protestant bibles, the Latin Vulgate translates "epiousion" as _supersubstantialem_, or supersubstancial. And that was always understood as a reference to the Eucharist.

Many writings from the old testament have been reinterpreted in the new testament, this happens all the time. You may see your bible as one book written long ago but there are hundreds or over a thousand years between the time of Jesus and the time some old testament books were written

Why doesn't anyone refer to this scene as well with Psalm 82 when this argument comes up about who the gods are? Well, check the KJV...

Oh... ye sons of men....? Hmmmm. This puts the translations either in conflict with each other if you believe Dr. Heiser, or they make perfect sense if you believe what Jesus told us about these gods in John 10:35.
@Boris Disko The ESV translation of "you gods" in Ps. 58:1 is debated. NIV has "Do you rulers indeed speak justly?" KJV has "Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation?" CSB has "Do you really speak righteously, you mighty ones?" Kind of hard to make a hard and fast decision on this when our translations have so many variations.

Psalm 82’s gods are angels. However, many people may struggle with the notion that angels can be unjust judges or judges period. I don’t think that angels have a spiritual courtroom, but rather that their judgement is exercised by their activity upon the inhabitants of the earth. Michael is Israel’s prince that fights for the children of Israel in the spiritual realm.
The unjust angelic judges accept the persons of the wicked. This can be an approval of wicked activity by humans or even the encouragement or interference of angels to bring about wickedness in relation to humans, instead of defending the poor and fatherless and doing justice to the needy.
God has never called an angel son, but he has with Jesus and me lol
@@reuelcelestial9567 I submit to you that the most natural understanding of the word “gods” is that it’s referring to immortal beings, hence angels.
@@ProjectCould I think @reuel celestial is on to something. When I took OT in seminary I was blessed by the opportunity to learn under a Messianic Rabbi. He suggested that in rabbinic literature angels are more or less automatons that cannot rebuke the will of God. The Hebrew word for angel is mal'akh. There is a massive difference between elohim and mal'akh. Regardless, between the rabbinic teachings and Dr. Heiser's teachings, I believe Heiser to have this one nailed. The Sons of God are above the angels as we humans created in His image are above the angels. Have you read Heiser's book "Angels." I think that would give you a great framework for angels.
@@blakekerr4293 I haven’t. I’m a King James Bible believer, and that alone forces me to come to some different understandings than Heiser has. Mike Hoggard has a lot of content on RUclips about the spiritual realm from a KJV perspective.
The first word in the Torah/Bible is, בראשית (In the beginning...). Lets break it down by its syllables and read it.
בר (Bar) = Son
א (Aleph) = God
שית (Shayith) = Thorns
In the beginning, God knew man would fail and what He would have to do to raise him up.
Everyone says Elohim is used for many different things but the word divine is not. Divine is specifically used for heavenly beings. So why would anyone assume it’s a human ruler or judge when it’s not just the term Elohim that translates to gods, but also another word that translates to DIVINE council
That on top of all the other points of praising God above beings that are far above humans is far more impressive and awesome and divine assembly being in the skies and God saying “like a man” but not “a man” and asking where you were when the sons of god were rejoicing as he laid the fountains of the cosmos and then telling sons of god they will die like men and saying how satan was also with the sons of god that came before God implying shame and rebellion in a space of the that a human wouldn’t be at the point that that was happening etc…

The men believe they are the sons of God and are judges, and are priests that will rule all nations based on this scripture. Its sad when theology messes up critical, thinking and truth. Isnt there scripture that says when Jesus judges these fallen angels and their nations, and He alone rules all nations, he allows people to become preists for Him to assist Him in ruling the nations? We will be a kingdom of priests?

I do see the divine council in the Bible and the elohim = spiritual beings view. But Psalm 82:2-4 clearly lists responsibilities and expectations assigned to men during a period of time and regarding social issues that are judged between men. There is no way that any spiritual beings, any good, holy, divine sons of God would be assigned that kind of office and realm of operations giving them time to judge things out of their own will, make mistakes, cultivate biases, neglect people, etc. and then have God come in to warn, admonish, correct and rebuke them. That is what God does with man, not elohim. If a holy angel or god transgressed in that way he would be immediately judged and lose his position; there is no gray area or extended period of time for them to behave that way. If it is an issue involving an evil spirit or principality, or authority, or word ruler, he has already been judged, he has no responsibility to take care of the poor or oppressed or any kind of social issue, they are way beyond that, they are "spiritual terrorists."
In other words, in the spiritual realm of God´s entire Kingdom, there are either holy, perfect and obedient elohim or there are evil spirits that have crossed the line already and are in rebellion, technically in Satan´s kingdom. There is no gray area, no middle ground for elohim, that scenario only exists for men. No good angels or divine gods or elohim make mistakes or sin. And if they do, if one of the good ones sins or rebels or does not do God´s will, he is immediately dealt with, he crossed the line, he´s toast, judged and awaiting final eternal judgment.
Finally, finally. Starting to figure it out. Now admit Son's-of-God are not Angels and Angels are not Son's-of-God and we will have gotten somewhere?
I believe that final judgement was in AD70.

Thank you again for an excellent expository. I am a bit confused concerning what God allows in His presence - these rebels are still members of the divine council in spite of their wickedness. Does scripture state when these evil divine beings are purged from the divine council and heaven? Why does the Lord tolerate them in His presence?
Jesus said, the kingdom of God is within you. So if at anytime in your life you have acted wickedly, then wickedness has been in his presence. I myself speak as a former rebel.
God created heavenly/divine beings for the spiritual realm. He has a counsel that they were part of it when he placed them over the nations split at the tower of Babel event.
That's the Deut 32 (v. 8 & 17) worldview basis Mike has explained.
They are no longer part of His counsel as they chose to disobey God's command to rule justly and desired worship. They basically have become gods of the ancient nations (Egypt, Assyria, etc) and today's world religions.
They are the principalities and spiritual wickedness in heavenly places Paul states in Eph 6:12.
Another example is the Prince of Persia the angel Gabriel had to deal with in Daniel 10:13. Michael, another "prince" had to come and help get him through to Daniel.
These other "gods" lose at the end of days and will die like men. They've already loss since the cross and our fiath walk in Jesus is our daily spiritual warfare on display to these rulers that do not have power over is. We now have His family Name that ascends above all powers on earth and in heaven.

So with this in mind, is Jesus basically trolling the Jewish Leaders in John 10 with their own reasoning? Is he only quoting the Septuagint version of Psalm 82, which seems quite different from Masoretic or Dead Sea texts? If he is sort of trolling, he shows that, by their interpretations, they shouldn't be surprised or offended that a man could be called "elohim" or "theoi" "divine/god". Even though Psalm 82 isn't really referring to men as elohim, it is speaking of the spiritual backdrop and council, this was one of their interpretations and Jesus seeks to expose that and turn it on its head. In their misrepresentation of Psalm 82 and others, for whatever reasons, Rabbis and Jews missed that God can do whatever he wants to accomplish his will. And it just so turns out that his will was to come as a suffering servant, bring a sword to the status quo, divide person against person, and tear the temples down and rebuild them his way by spreading his Spirit to all flesh in a way that destroys both the rebellious spiritual powers and human powers and is a stumbling block to those who won't believe. That is Jesus Christ, son of God, Immanuel. Plus the cross is the last thing that anyone expected from the Messiah. Wow.

Totally onboard with the idea that there's a divine council of gods/sons of God, but I don't see how verse 7 works with that: 'ye shall DIE like men, and fall like one of the princes.'
Matitiahu Tsevat opines that this may be a merismus indicating mankind, from the lowliest commoner to the highest prince. In that sense it would not make sense that God would tell human rulers that they will die like mankind as they are already under the curse. However, it may be a fitting punishment to demote the Angelic members of the divine council to suffer death. 2Peter 2:4 informs us that God has already cast the sinful angels into Tartaros (hell) where they are chained until the judgement.

Why did you use biblical examples that can not be cross reference passages to prove your point instead of going to a passage that actually tells us who they are? Words directly from Gods mouth in John10:24-35. Those whom the word of God came to. Was it a heavenly host the word of God came to? Is it the heavenly host judging the people unjustly and showing partiality to the wicked? Provide justice? Rescue the poor? No. It was human agents, in the form of the priesthood. That is a biased translation of PS 89 he used. Ps 89 really undermines the case for Ps 82 being a Divine Council in heaven.

Psalm 82 is definitely talking of most likely principalities. But Jesus quotes this Psalm in John and it gets a bit confusing.
These gods are actually angels. And demons are alwo called as gods. Because if God in the Old Testament acknowledged other gods beside him, they were actually demons becoming gods or worshipped as gods.
My biggest concern that I can’t get around though is when this psalm is used by Jesus in John 10:34-35 to show that human rulers were also called gods. How does that reconcile/harmonize with what Dr. Heiser is saying?

I think Jesus is using their narrow interpretation of the psalm to prove by even their own law nothing he says is wrong, and again points them to judge by his works. He's not necessarily saying that's how you interpret the verse, or that's the only interpretation. There is a lot of re-packaging of scripture in the NT that even Jesus does. He's essentially trolling them with their own doctrine and getting against the real issue, which is that they hate how good he is and do not want to follow him.

This is end time prophecy. The Muslims know they must walk in darkness. They are denied even opening the book of the law to read it in Islam.

There's another thing that doesn't seem quite right here... According to Heiser, God is "excoriating" members of the divine council for the very same failures He is judging Israel. But the net result is the same. In other words, ALL of the nations, EVERY SINGLE ONE, rebel against God and even with God's perfect righteousness and His efforts to burn away the dross of Israel, His own chosen inheritance, has rebelled. One could posit that at the time of this judgment against his divine council, God has failed as well. And so, 2500 or more years later, the net result of this divine council and its Leader is an entire world of nations in rebellion against God. The rebellion in the "Deuteronomy 32 World View" is universal, regardless as to who is driving the bus.
Jesus told us who these gods are and there is no doubt they are men in the context of the question he was answering. You don't have to argue with strawmen as if the question is unanswered in Scripture. I will take His interpretation over any so called bible scholar...

The dangers in not believing what Jesus said about this are many. You are placing demons and false gods on a council with God. Think about that! Even in Job angels don't convene a meeting, they present themselves.
Another is, the Dr. literally calls it a worldview - the Deuteronomy 32 worldview. This means it taints the everything you see and read with this false belief.
God can't lie, that is why he had an angel do it to the prophets of Baal. Why don't you believe what He said about these Elohim?

After taking in "What are Angels" I posed these thoughts. Since it was an older than two years you tube I want to share my thoughts here in hopes of getting some feedback.
While I like listening to Heiser and believe his intent is good and noble, I have to remember: no matter what his conclusions are I have to research study and pray as to what is The Truth. I must remember that there other equally or better trained theologians that have different takes, opinions and conclusions on various scriptures than he does. While sometimes two different opinions on a passage may be correct because some passages clearly had two meanings, it is not always the case. Sometimes one is correct and the other is not!
For instance-God did NOT write the Bible as Heiser seemed to imply. It is all God inspired! But with the exception of the Words of Jesus Christ and the prophets of the future events, it WAS NOT dictated by The Father.
The Four Gospels MML&J bear me out on this. The are all writing the accounts of the ministry of Christ from human perspective, understanding and sharing of The Truth to generations to come
The only thing is, you don’t know that. None of us do. It may be God inspired, but we as humans have no way to know which parts God actually dictated to man, and which parts He did not.
Heiser doesn’t claim the Bible was dictated, in fact he is strongly against that view. He also believes the entire Bible is inspired.
This is a very compelling explanation regarding the "gods" and "sons of god" but I'm having difficulty understanding for what they are being judged. Scripture is replete with judgements against the Nation of Israel for not judging properly the poor, the fatherless, and the widows. The only conclusion that I can draw is that the "gods" are, in some manner, complicit in these earthly acts. That Satan is, surely but this would seem to indicate that there are other "gods" who also exert influence upon us.
Lower case g “gods” are merely elohim or angels. Lesser Devine beings under The Most High.
*This goes back to the dividing of the Nations. Man rebelled against God again and God withdrew Himself since man wanted nothing more to do with Him. God established the nations and set over them Principalities which are basically what you could think of as Angelic Governances. Think of the U.S. Gov. and just imagine there being angels tasked with positions of leadership. Behind every kingdom on earth there is an invisible Kingdom ruling over it. Angelic Princes are the rulers in that Kingdom. Their task was to NOT lead men into further sin and rebellion but to contain them. At some point these Principalities rebelled and let the nations into sin and into wars. This is what they're being judged for. The direction connection between events on earth especially dealing with kings and the motions of kingdoms and governments and these Unseen Kingdoms is severely underestimated.*
That is exactly the implication. I trust that by now you’ve watched Heiser’s other content about the dividing up of the nations and the rebellion of the sons of God.

It's just that I've yet to see Heiser adequately address the reason for automatically going to "sons of god" when the "sins" mentioned are the ones that apply for mere mortals. Just saying, "It's connected to Psalm 82." is insufficient for me.

Hello Heiser, what you are saying is the same in different languages, Sons of God, or Sons of Judge.
Doesn't really match what Christ is talking about in John 10 34-35 when he cites the same verse. John 5 he says there's only one God and as you've noted, the following verse says you will die like men 82:6-7. So who's dying? If they're in the council of the heavenly court they are not fallen angels he consorts with. The good angels by now have passed the test and are one will with God. The fallen are damned. This verse could only apply to "those showing partiality to the wicked and defend the unjust". It's clear partiality to the wicked could only be done by men entrusted, as he says in John 10 34-35, with the word of God. Definitely not demons or a council of gods.
Is seems Gog is one of the sons of God judged in psalms 82 to whom God charged with running/managing certain pieces of the earth after they were divided up at the tower of babel. Like the "prince of the kingdom of Persia" (Not a demon, this is actually a high ranking son of God, so high that it took a Chief Prince level Son of God name Michael -who happens to be the Advocate/Manager/Prince of Israel to help fight him so Daniel could receive his words from God ) and "prince of Greece"(not a demon).. .....Gog the "prince of Rosh ("of rosh" seems to actually means "chief of"), Meshech, and Tubal" (not a demon) these likewise...are Not "demons" and not humans, it seems to me that Gog is one of those sons of God that did not rule/manage the land "portion" provided by God (Deut 32) in the way God expects them too and got judged in Psalms 82..
Gog is classified as a Chief Prince (same classification as Micheal to a degree) of the Meshech, and Tubal nations. This is why he shows up in Revelation AND Ezekiel.. A regular human cant show up in the current and latter days (end times). God judged them in Psalms 82 and said that they will die like men for how they managed the nations and Ezekiel 39: 10 apparently provides the prophecy account of Gog dieing like a man and gets buried like a man in the later days (place to be called Harmon Gog which means alley of the multitudes of Gog) after the devil/dragon is released from the pit post his 1000 years in the pit... The devil/dragon compels the nations and Gog to go against Israel and Gog gets crushed.
According to Revelation 20: 7-8 Gog + nations including Magog dont attack Israel until AFTER the 1000 years after the devil/dragon is imprisoned. So it seems to me that people should be worrying about the "Scarlet" Beast before they worry about Gog.

"fish" and "deer" are collective nouns. They mean the fish as a species, or deer as such. That there are many, many fish is accepted in the meaning of "fish" as a collective noun. So when Heiser isays Elohim is such a noun, he is unknowingly admitting that Elohim are more than one, several, or whatever. And, indeed, in another tradition, the Elohim are the Seven Spirits of Creation. But: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord they God is One." Yes, Elohim are aspects of the One God, as waves are of the sea.
Why would God be judging elohim for doing things like not defending the lowly and fatherless? Or why would God tell the lesser elohim to rescue the lowly and the poor?
Those things don't make sense if he's talking to lesser elohim, they only make sense if he's talking to human judges

@@sax7productions There are anyway dodgy spirits in heaven sometimes, part of the divine council who would lie (thou shalt not bear false witness) and God for the meanwhile allows it 1 Kings 22:22. Also Satan appears there , Job 1:6. Perhaps the seventh day adventists are right and the heavenly realm is also to be cleansed at a future time determined by God.

The gods were set over the nations to rule in the place of God. It was through indirect action that they were to influence the nations. This is where they failed. Their influence led to bloodshed and abuse as it still does. Just look at Russia. There is an invisible Principality behind that. Putin is at their whim.*

The line of reasoning is EXTREMELY misguided... Just because a similar reading is found in another Psalm, the context of the one cannot be imposed onto another verse.
Not only this, but his interpretation of Psalm 82 completely ignores Jesus's use of it in John 10:31-39. His reference to this passage DEMANDS that the "sons of the Most High" be men - otherwise His reference makes no sense at all - they accuse Him of blasphemy because a man is called "Son of God," so Jesus showed them scripture where men are called "sons of God."
After the Jews picked up stones to stone Jesus because He had made Himself out to be God (Theos, Elohim - in the Divine sense) in John 10:30 when He said, “I and the Father are one,” He defends Himself by reminding them of the passage in the psalms where the judges who were given charge over the law of God referred to mere men - albeit men of authority and prestige - as “gods” (Theos, Elohim - same word, but not in the Divine sense) - Jesus’ point is this: you charge me with blasphemy based on my use of the title “Son of God” (John 10:36), yet your own Scriptures apply the same term (“sons of the Most High”) to magistrates in general (Psalm 82:6). If those who hold a divinely appointed office can be considered “gods,” how much more can the One whom God has chosen and sent?

Elohim in the context of John 10:35 means judges.Jesus is excoriating them for showing poor judgement when they should know better
