  • The full video of 13 year old Evgeny Kissin playing Chopin's Piano Concerto no. 1, op. 11, with the Moscow PO under Andrei Chistyakov, live on 23 May 1985 (probably.....there is some confusion over the date because of how young he looks. However the conductor is not Kitayenko). Kissin enters at 04:40. Even as a boy he knew how to charm with flowers.

i've watched this video a few times.
these days during the 18th Chopin Competition the final stage, after watching a lot of the new blood performing this work, i decided to watch 13 years old Kissin again.
Every century or so, we might see two or three pianists like him if we are lucky. That's how I feel about Kissin. He's more than a genius.

    • @raymondgood6555

Yes, I classify him as a super genius. He is a finished pianist at age 13, as was Clara Schumann. By that I mean there was little if anything left to teach them. They were ready at 13 to amaze the world.

His prodigious technique and interpretation of the music is clearly seen. It's amazing to see and hear him carry the melodic line in such a mature way. But the most precious element in his performance (to me at least) is his "child-like simplicity", sincere and transparent in his approach. After all, he was only 13. Way to go, Kissin. God bless :)))

Exactly, there is something in his playing that's beyond just running his fingers on the keys playing a song, he's actually telling a story and taking you back to the 1800s. I honestly feel it every time I listen to his playing it's like meditation. It's just unexplainable how his delivery touches your most inner senses and takes you on the journey.

if you've been playing since age of 2 like he has and play over 6 hours every day since age 10, it's really not that hard anymore. same goes for every other child "prodigies" who only adhere to what's already written. The true child prodigies were Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven and Mendelssohn (and every other composer) who were so monumentally gifted that they were already composing incredible masterworks as children and teens. Today millions of Chinese children play as well as Kissin, not because of talent, but because of similar rigorous working methods as him since the earliest of ages. (Often their parents force them)

@@pianodude5426 It should be noted that most of the composers you named did not compose 'masterpieces' until early adulthood, but I think that title is a bit preposterous in this case as they were composing amazing music as teens anyways (e.g. Mozart wrote the Cum sancto spiritu fugue in KV 66 at age 13). It should also be noted that Kissin has composed music at age 12. e.g. ruclips.net/video/HI0waPtcbx0/видео.html

Let's assume he took a year to learn this. He plays piano concerto number 2 right after this (I have a recording of this entire concert) which means that by the time he had been invited to play this concert he could play AT LEAST 2 full Chopin piano concertos (or they probably wouldn't have invited him). That means he started learning this at most 9 years after he was born.

A lot of pianists start the piece with forte, but I love how Kissin started with soft sounds. It was not to show off but to show the true music!

It's incredible to watch this video and then his performance in 2011. Talk about refinement, and not saying this performance is bad by any standards.

Besides being one of chopins most eloquent pieces for orchestra, all together with conductor and Kissin, it was 'mesmerizing' to me.

What is quite wonderful about this is that he does not hurry . It takes real bottle in this era to regard musicality as more important than technique, though of course he has that in spades

He is awesome a prodigy, a genius to be playing such at an early age just a child not even a teenager for such capacity. Thank you for this video just incredible to watch Kissin play. As he states he thrown to the musical word at this age so he does not have any experience to compete in the international music competition according to him in one of his interviews.

Juste merci !
