  • Demo of my AEG K8 Magnetophon playing Flat Foot Sam by Elmon Mickle (a very rare Elko blues 45rpm by the way). This rare machine is in great working order and uses German Telefunken vacuum tubes (EF12, EF14 etc.). It runs at 76cm/s (30ips) and is full track mono.
    I'm looking for old AEG Magnetophon machines, if you have one please let me know.

    This video itself sounds vintage!
    Low bitrate audio and 4:3 picture... I do miss the 2000s.

      That machine is probably more Hi-Fi than his camera

      Yes the video have historical value, but must be in 720 lines and hifi record , because it's all about audio

    76cm/s full track in 1948! Obviously mono, but audiophile quality!

    Beautiful machine.
    The way the heads are set up it looks that the magnetic side of the tape is facing outwards.
    Amazing high speed 76 cm sec.
    Very smooth braking too.
    Thanks for showing

      Yes, the oxide layer faces outward. Ampex copied this format, including the speed, for their first recorder, the Model 200A.

    Magnetophon tape recorders developed by AEG were designed outside of anything related to wire recorders. The 77cm/s speed was only implemented to increase the recording length. If it were possible to manufacture thiner tapes, believe me that the 1m/s speed would have last longer until the head gaps get thinger too. Maybe the wire recorders speed matches more or less the later tape speed, but this has nothing related. It's only a hazard. Telegraphones ran at 1,5m/s by the way.

    Fantastic machine, even it's slightly bigger than an iPod :-)
    Thank you for showing us!

    @mkkiani Thanks for your comment. A minor correction though: magnetic tape is not a German invention. It is Danish: Poulsen Telegraphones existed in all forms in 1900: steel wire, metal tape and disc. However, the magnetic tape as we understand it nowadays (i.e a plastic tape coated with an iron oxide) is a German invention.

    Thanks! The RFT MTG25 was made in 1956, so it is 8 years older than the K8 indeed.

    actually I SUSPECT the reason for the 30ips standard is because it was HALF the speed of the standard american WIRE RECORDERS - which (professionally) ran at 60 IPS.

  • @videogamehistorian
    @videogamehistorian  12 лет назад +2

    It's not related to wire recorders. German recorders made after 1936 ran at 77cm/s. When Mullin captured two K4 machines, the speed was measured and found to be so close to 30ips that it was rounded to 30ips. Thus the standard high speed was born (and later often replaced by 15ips). Europe used that speed which corresponds to 76.2cm/s which is often referred az 76cm/s (just like 33rpm instead of 33 1/3 rpm).

    You're quite right. 15ips is the speed most often used in studios but 30ips is used for highest quality in the treble. This speed doesn't give better bass, quite in the contrary. The main reason of the original 77cm/s speed (which the Americans rounded to 30ips when building their own machines) is due to the much larger head gaps of the time (40 microns for the record head, 20 microns for the playback head) and also the larger size of the particles of the magnetic oxide.

    Hello!
    I own an K8 "Koffer" nearly like yours, and an T8 reel to reel drive, both must be restaurated. The T8 is now running again, one reel motor has been repaired, some shortcircuits has been repaired, maybe it would do his job again - when the electronic would be restaurated. In the Box there are missing some parts i don´t know how they look like. Maybe we can share some photos via email? I would be very happy to get it run again in some month/years! I´m very proud to have it :o) .

    Hi Mr Winter. I found a tape of Magnetophon AEG of a Bayreuth concert from 1956. Do you know what speed is need for playback?. Does it only playback in AEG or Telefunken machines?. Thanks

    Does reporting mean, beside 30 ips also 15 ips?

  • @antigen4
    @antigen4 12 лет назад

    well - where do you imagine tape recorders COME from? Yes - precisely - 30 ips or 77 cmsec-1 and by the DIN system the next adjacent speeds would be 15 and 60 or ABOUT 38 cm sec-1 and 154 cm sec-1 look it up.
