I am an atheist. But I love black gospel, Mahalia and Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers, being my favorites. Today is January 20th, 2025, and something horrible is taking place in America today. But it is also the day we honor Dr. King. I'm sharing his favorite song in his memory.
I was trying to remember where I’d heard this song, then read your comment and remembered it from a documentary about Dr King. Such a beautiful song, and beautiful voice to honor his memory!
You know my friend this is so true my mom is 91 years old and full Alzheimer's my mama singing in the nursing home the same way a few weeks ago but her and my dad are fighters my dad was in a bad accident a few months ago my uncle got to go home my dad was stuck in the hospital off and on a long time now he should be back at the same nursing home him and my mom are hanging in there together so when I hear this wonderful song it brings tears to my eyes but I'm this type of person I'm going to hold on to God's precious hand until he says different so all my friends and people in this world going through so many different things my heart is right there with you in Jesus name
Today is my birthday, I had no money, zero’s in my account, worked under the rain, borrowed money to eat and get back home, I almost cried a couple of times today, but I’m going to bed now, God sees me. I’ll stick with HIM
Remember JOB, this is a Test of your Faith! When I was about to lose my Home I said "Lord, if I have to sleep on a Park bench, I'm gonna say Thank you Lord because you have Blessed me so many times when I didn't Deserve nothing but Death!" I lived in my Car, showered at a Friend's house, went to work 7 days a week, saved my Money till I could get back on my feet. Keep the Faith, Trust God, Trouble don't last always... This Too shall Pass!! 🙏😊
My momma LOVED Mahalia Jackson. I always her music when she was in hospice. I saw her eyes teared up when I would play this. It brought “peace” to the room. Now she’s watching over me as I play her music…
My mother has Alzheimer’s disease and this song CALMS her down!!! She even sings the song, of course she cries, mom is 93 years old. I love this song as well.
Mahalia Jackson remains my 1st inspiration and role model as a gospel singer...l remember looking at a documentary of people climbing over walls to see her in concert. She blessed many worldwide. Been listening her music from my early teens...I'll be 55 in couple days God spare my life. I'm still listening it's now 2023. Continue to sleep in peace Ms. Jackson🙏❤👌🙌🌟🌹
My name is Diana LaFleur I am 64 years old, my grandmother took me to church and I remember that she played Mahalia Jackson when I was about 4 years old, I grew up in Berkeley CA, I've been through breast cancer homelessness depression you name it I've been through it, and I'm still listening in 2024. God bless Ms Mahalia Jackson, sleep in peace great one👑🌹⚜️🇺🇸
If you all are saying, rest in peace or sleep in peace when the Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with. The Lord I would submit that Mahalia. Jackson is in the presence of God. And not resting in peace, but in her heavenly home singing and shouting and dancing. And walking around heaven all day.😊❤🎉
My mother may she rest in peace used to say of Miss Jackson, " When she sang she was talking with the FATHER." I remember those everytime I hear her sing.
They're actually two films out right now about her. One is called "Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story and the other one is called "The Miracle of Music | Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia"
On the 9th of August 2023, I bid farewell to my beloved grandmother, knowing that it was our final goodbye in this lifetime. She had been my guiding light, teaching me the art of prayer, the essence of kindness, and the profound meaning of ubuntu. Our connection was a treasure beyond words - a bond of love and understanding that knew no bounds. Her presence in my life was an invaluable gift, and as I let her go, I entrusted her into the hands of the divine. May the precious Lord gently hold her hand and guide her to her eternal home, where she rightfully belongs. In my heart, I carry the hope that her voice will echo in my memories, that her laughter will resound in the corners of my mind, and that her teachings will continue to shape me. As I embrace the days ahead without her physical presence, I find solace in the thought that her spirit will forever be with me. Rest in peace, dear grandmother, and know that your legacy of love and wisdom will forever light my path. Lala ngoxolo, Magalela Gasa.
You have a beautiful legacy in your trust. Keep the torch burning and pass it on to the next generation. This is the race of life, you've been blessed with the keys that will open every door, use them wisely. 🙏🏽
My mother used to listen to this song. All day.. As a little girl. May, my mother rest in peace I never knew why, until I became an adult. God give my mother the peace she always wanted. Amen
Late to the realization, thank you all, those who glimpse at this and think nothing of it, soften thy heart and hear, this shall be my prayer for us....
This song I use to listen too when I was growing up my mother has all gospel music as she rest in peace in heaven along with my daddy I now know what gospel music is God is trying to tell us all something
I was very blessed to have my grandmother in my life for such a short period of time , I was very young (5) years old and I don’t know what happened to me, because they said that she had died, because I was a very disturbed little boy , and because she was taken away from me, I realize it actually was a blessing for me, because I am better man than I could ever imagine and I thank whoever made me think that she was gone and forgotten for about 55 years and now I feel that I am very blessed, because I am my own man and I can stand on my own, and nothing will ever hurt my heart ever again.
Mahalia Movie brought me here, the song is dedicated to the memory of former President Jimmy Carter who died on December 29 2024 Happy New Year Blessings and HUGS MARANATHA 👑💜🔯

I woke up this morning with the name of Mahalia Jackson on my mind for unknown reason. I knew she was a singer but had to Google her because I couldn't remember any songs she sang. This refreshed my memory, she had a fantastic voice.
The first time I heard Ms. Jackson's rendition of this song was when I saw the film Mississippi Burning (1988), and I fell in love with it! As I write this comment, this was the first time I listened to it in years, and my feeling for it has not diminished. She had one of the most beautiful voices in the world. May she rest in peace.
I love this song and I use to listen to this song when my grandmother would be cooking my breakfast and she would get very emotional and would cry and I will never forget those Sunday mornings.

Here because of Mississippi Burning and Trumps catastrophic reelection. Love this woman.
Martin Luther King apparently said as he was dying “precious Lord take my hand”, sister Mahalia sang this at his funeral. God blessed them both.
Amen Amen 🙏
The film "Mississippi Burning" was made more powerful by the fact that this song was the intro.
