Talk about a tough call. I'm really on the fence about these two wah pedals. The CAE wah is insanely versatile. It's pristine, with loads of clean high end. It has a huge sweep. The yellow channel is pure old-school classic 60's wah, and the red channel has a deep full spectrum throaty range. The Cantrell wah on the other hand is a bit more limited, and can't do the classic porn style "wah-chica-wah-wah" sound, but the midrange hump and throaty nature of it sounds absolutely sublime with gain.
You be the judge.

MC404 just has it in spades and a broader sweep as well as infinitely adjustable pots for each inductor that really tailors it to two guitars.
I remember this wah coding $324 in 2004! I always wanted one and I finally bought that thing this year! 🤣
I bought the CAE MC404 and was listening to this shoot out and then suddenly the outro started, I thought it was a new video starting. Anyway I love it, grabbed me immediately. It's lovely.
The MXR MC-404 Custom Audio Electronics Wah vs the Dunlop JC95 Jerry Cantrell Signature Crybaby Wah!!! This one really has me on the fence. I actually did this shootout for myself since I was in the market for a new Wah and couldn't decide, and apparently no one on RUclips has ever done a comparison of these two pedals. So.. I bought them both and figured I'd let everyone else see how they stack up against each other. On one hand I really like the CAE wah. The two channels make it extremely versatile. The yellow channel is classic old school 60's wah, and red has that huge guttural sweep of modern wahs. It's also got tons of pristine headroom. Not to mention the boost(which I don't even demo here). The only thing I'm not crazy about it is that it's almost too bright, and the sweep range is almost too much, without any strong mid range definition, sometimes. The Cantrell wah on the other hand is huge and throaty in the midrange. It's more like the wah I hear in my head. Extremely musical, with no over the top bite in the high end (which imo can be a turn off for many wah pedals). At this point I'm not sure which one I'm going to keep. They're both amazing wahs, and do their own thing insanely well. I almost sort of wish there was a wah with all 3 options in one pedal. :-)
What decision did you take?
I just got the MC-404 I had the 535Q & didn't like the short throw & sent it back to get the CAE is sounds vocal & rich to me w/two Fasel Inductors it's two for one w/MXR Boost.
Wah can be a hugely diverse and useful tool; always feel that the surface has only been scratched.Having a nice, broad , tonal palette, combined with ease of use, sets it up for good, fresh, things- both good wahs.
To me the MC404 has more edgeness with more punch while the Cantrell is smoother and creamy. Nice video!
CAE 404!...it’s versatile! if you have the 404 & 535Q you can have every possible signature wah sound!..i have both🤘
Darn, i had the 404. Loved it. Best wah i ever played. Sold it. But now the band is coming back together and Jerry’s wah popped up... they both sound really amazing. Maybe two wah’s better anyway🤔😂
I am sure 3 wah's are the bomb Jim 😆
I love wah and got a fetish for em. Got a Dunlop Regular wah,a Zakk Wylde wah, a Kirk Hammett wah, a Dunlop Rotovibe, and a Geezer Butler wah- Morley Power Fuzz Wah for bass. About to order the Jerry Cantrell, Slash, Dimebag wah From Hell, and a Dunlop 105Q for my bass rig. Why not have a pedal board filled with some BANGIN stompboxes, and have a few extra long cables for 5-7 wahs- (plus Rotovibe pedal with the guitar board) for my guitar and bass rig? Be like a kid in a candy store and be able to use all of em. Screw having to choose one or the other. Just order all of em and hook em all up!
Got in the habit of ordering at least 1-3 pedals every payday. Just guitar plugged straight into an amp is so boring to me.
@@johnhareiel5118 That is the way to find your own sound and separate yourself
All the dudes who are talking about that they plug straight in they were listening to much to boring musician i guess ...... Rory Gallagher seems to be an icon but after 2 songs i fall asleep.
Maxon OOD-9
MXR deep phase
MXR CAE 404 wah and just an simple delay from Harley Davidson...NOOO, Benton ;-)
i play a Roland JC-77 and that is greath for chorus and clean, but without pedals you are very limited.
Look at the gig pedalboard of any wellrespected guitar-icon and you will notice that we cannot live without very pretty women, but we will die without pedals. Amen
@@andreetje1964 Reaaon I'm collecting mine. Got so boring after playing 2 days straight into an amp. Just bought home a new Fender P Bass and only owe $200 more for a Aria pro ii SB-1000 black "Cliff Burton" bass. Also gonna but a Jackson bass on layaway when I pick up the Ampeg 8x10 cab
i like the CAE because it has LEDs
that should be a standard feature on all wahs
To me the CAE sounds a tad bit better because it has a little more clearer and articulated sound. I want the CAE and the Xotic Wah.
That foot got funk
Very good sound for custom audio for me.
Nice video! Although it'd be awesome if you could demo the Cantrell wah in a high gain setting so we can see what it'd do in metal.
Does your Cantrell wah have half the physical travel distance of the MXR? I just bought both because I didn't know which one I want but..wanted to see if this is actually the way it's supposed to be o_O The Cantrell has very little travel distance with your foot.
Is the Cantrell wah true bypass?
Cheers
Nope.
MC404 is better. It has a smoother-throw - throughout the entire frequency range ( heel to toe ). Plus it has the Choice between: the Yellow & the Red Inductor, ( in addition to ) the Boost function. Its a more Versatile, better sounding & Professional Pedal. - Michael Caz - NYC -
I agree 100%. I have had the Cantrell and sold it. I hated how it felt. short travel and a one trick pony. The CAE sounds deeper and fatter. Just a better pedal.
I owned a CAE MC-404. I dislike it distorted my clean channel sound when in toe position (yellow fasel). I tried to tweak the trim-pot, but it's still not easy to get as musical sound as JC95.
CAE no question...
In my opinion the Cantrell has more tone in it. It is great for funk and alt metal like Alice In Chains (Jerry's band). The MC404 has really fat tone.
I love the sound of muted notes when doing funk with the Cantrell wah.
+Renzo Igao I'm still torn. I made this video 8 months ago and I've been meaning to sell the one I don't like, but.... I still own both. :-/
Erik Z Keep the Cantrell man!
Which one did you end up with?
Ha!!! Funny you should ask. I ended up keeping both. :-)
+Erik Z good move. i'd do the same!
Colocar o cutuvelo no lugar
Cantrell.
He makes a Wah sound like Bad Disco
My Cantrell Wah looks completely different to this one in video.
Is yours the newer pedal with tribal killer whale on it? I'm thinking about getting that one.
Mine is darker than his. The rusty worn look on his is brighter
Yeah they're the same wah but that one's the JC95B which is a limited, I think, redesign.
Cantrell crushed the cae!!
Yr feet smell. Can smell 'em from 'ere.
Spencer Kissack Thank you! I was hoping someone would notice. I use a special foot cream that has a mix of green tea, jasmine, hibiscus, peony, lemongrass and coconut oil. It really helps moisturize your feet and has an amazing silk smooth feel. Great for calluses, and just smells absolutely heavenly. It's a little pricey, but I feel worth every penny.
Hahahahahahahaaaa!! Great reply Eric, love it! Good vid, btw. So nice to hear a bloody decent sense'a humor!
+Erik Z And it makes the tone better !
