Very good bandscan, this is a very capable radio. I keep recommending the 880, not sure if anyone listens with the lure of all the el-cheapo junque out there. My 880 and 990 are two of my favorite portable radios over 50+ years of DX'ing. Thanks Tood!
Couldn't help but notice the size similarity between the tecsun 330 and the Grundig G5 😊 I stop an wonder sometimes if I'm the only one who has been inspired to buy radios by this Todderbert guy LOL an then he got me hooked on CFZM-AM 740 ZOOMER radio in Toronto Canada especially the afternoon express with Norm And Eva D. If I don't have good reception I can always check out this guy's channel he's always got good reception!👍 😆😄
🤣🤣🤣....He is a good seller. He articulates very well when describing features on these radios. He has that "broadcast" voice that's very clear and to the point.THE BEST REVIEWS out there.
The PL-880 is one of my fav radios. It’s great on its battery, sensitive, always have a good time (propagation cooperating) on MW. PL-990 is a tad more sensitive IMO but I still get everything on the 880 as the 990. The build is superior one of the best looking radios!
Hej thanks for the info regarding the Tecsun PL-880 I do not own this radio but I am a radio collector of radio devices of various kinds. I like listening to shortwave bands, airbands but yes i have the Tecsun PL-990X and the Tecsun H-501x and, The H-501x is my favorite a very sensitive radio take care and have nice sunday.
Pick up the tecsun an-200 passive loop antenna it will improve the acceptable but not perfect AM performance. It's a good investment cause you can use it with any portable and your home stereo system too. 👍🙂
@@alvinmorris5404 , already have one. I built and use a 5 foot hexagonal mag loop out of 1 inch copper pipe using a MLA-30+ with the PL-330. Far better reception that a PL-880 with an an-200.
Thanks for all your videos! This video was the one that made me finally pull the trigger. Recently got the Sangean SR-35 because it reminded me of my first transistor radio I got as a child 1974. It’s really fun, but now I want MORE! ;)
Ah! 1970s nostalgia is exactly why I am also getting a SW-radio ! Not sure if there is still a lot on SW these days with all the online communication going on.
As always, Thank you for the MW scan. Darn electrical weather interference, but come what may, not much we can do about it. The amount of time and effort you put in for us Radio Geeks is appreciated. And remastering of all the old time radio shows too!! IDK how you get so much done. All to say, we look forward to your latest RUclips edition. I can't count how many times I've searched your previous shows for radios I'm interested in to adding to my collection, much to my wife's chagrin.... ☺
The PL-880 is my "go to" portable. The audio quality is AMAZING. P.S. Even though I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, CKLW 800 Khz (Windsor, ONT) was one of my favorite stations growing up in the 1970s. It's "news/talk" today, but back then it was a KILLER "Top 40" station!
I noticed at the first station you were tuning in that I can hear precipitation static in between the small pops from the lighting discharge in the distance, I think it takes a really good radio to pick up the precipitation static which the PL880 does. You said that the 330 is slightly more portable, well if iron man didn't have to take up too much room with his extra sandwiches you'd have plenty of room left for 880 in the pick nick basket 😉
Hi Todderbert, Cool video for a good receiver.....audio quality is what i like the most on my 880....That and the interface user, very intuitive. Have a nice day :)
@@todderbert Thank you, I didn't know 880 was using PLL for SW reception, I thought its SW was based on DSP chip. @@todderbert Yeah, she's a keeper alright, I mean the PL660. Most others seem to, for one reason or another seem to hold on to their analog PL660 or 680. Its hard to find an analog SW SSB radio nowadays.

Hi Todd, can you help me? Would you say that this is one of the best of the Tecsun ranger? I’m torn between this and the Tecsun 990x Advice please my friend? Laurie
If you are wanting to have a radio that receives Shortwave and SSB for HAMs, then the 880 is still the first choice. The price is right, and the performance on all of the bands is solid.

I was in the market to get a shortwave radio and took the plunge and bought the pl880. Glad I did as it seems to be a quality unit.
I got mine brand new same model for $7.49 from goodwill store. I couldn’t believe less than $8 bucks.
Awesome find!
You certainly scored big! Just ordered mine!

RDS on FM would be nice but otherwise a good quality overall radio, Todderbert, indeed the Tecsun PL-880! Thank you...
Unfortunately, almost all Radios made today don't have RDS... It's really a shame if you ask me. :/
I love this radio. The only negative for me is the lack of a external AM antenna jack. Fortunately my PL-330 does.

I had this radio and it sounded good.
It had white noise on MW that covered the weaker stations, probably needed an additional filter.
Appears to have the most extensive functionality for storing stations into memory of any radio out there.

PL-880 is my favorite. Compared with xhdata d-808, PL8880 excels in audio quality and user interface.
I have the 660 but this one looks much better. I need to figure out how it works out on SSB. Thank you for your time have a great day.
I saw on another review the 660 was superior on ssb, smoother tuning just not as bassy.
Great presentation as always. Nice radio too

How do you like it compared to a true analog tuner such as PL660 or PL680, specially the SSB, muting, and band scan using the tuner knob?
Its PLL on SW and tunes Well on SSB.

What antenna do you recommend for the Tecson PL-880?
I use a simple Kaito T-1 22' wire antenna to great effect when strung outdoors.
Thanks for that tip.

How do you know what way to turn it
Could you compare this radio side by side with the S-880.

Goo Gone.
How come you haven't reviewed the Tecsun PL-990x and the H-501x? They've been on the market a while.
I may, but the bank roll is a bit on the tight side.
didn't expect this video o_O

Does anyone here know how to turn off the display so that the battery doesn’t go dead?
