Brilliant 🎉 I still play their music just for the appreciation of just how effing good they were as musicians and especially Shirls voice. If it was new music today then they would still be an absolute hit. I remember my sister Sue(RIP) used to tell me a story about when Skyhooks played at a St Bedes/Kilbreda dance when Skyhooks played. Apparently Br Paul pulled the power because he didn’t like the lyrics 😮😂😂😂
Quite possibly the only album that had three songs banned from radio in Aus. Long live the memory of Shirl ( Graeme) Strachan . Great singer, front man for Skyhooks- presenter of the "kids" show Shirls Neighbourhood. I used to leg it home from college to watch Shirls Neighbourhood. A small joint, and giggle my way through Ol Poss, Claude the crow etc. Not a children's show. Skyhooks were uniquely Australian, and we are the richer for them, and the poorer without them.
I remember this concert too . My brother was 9 , I was 11, my sister must have been 13 .We sat in the 3rd row in front of Red . Great view. Sharpie girls with those little cardigans and semi mullet hairstyles were almost suffocating little bro waving their scarves trying to get closer .He was sitting ,arms folded looking PISSED OFF!. Must have caught Red's eye as he pointed him out to Shirl and they had a chuckle, Shirl sure had some moves! I remember the free mars bars after ... Sweet ! Happy Times. ,
@@BTW... nope. But i remember a group Elbow Through My Rothko that started up after an elderly person fell through a Rothko work at a gallery. Best, most original band name ever! 😂
I think both Skyhook guitar players are absolutely brilliant and original in their approach. I don't get why so many people in the comments sections in Skyhooks videos always write "great vocals, horrible guitars".
NO idea thats why. Red was a very calculated guitar player and Bongo still learning on the fly and they had sound that blended great . When you saw them live you could really appreciate the talent of them all.
I did an apprenticeship in Toorak Village at a MB dealer. Every time I walked up to Toorak Rd for morning tea and lunch I used to look at the supercillious conceited rich snobs while humming this song to myself and thinking what hollow empty and unhappy people they all were. They were looking down at me I'm sure lol.
That sounds like the Worrells Mercedes’ place that used to be at Carters Avenue, that ran off Toorak Road. That’s where the gears of Toorak Village is located. Toorak Village was where I used to go and have a cappuccino occasionally. There used to be a small coffee shop there and Lillian Frank the socialite owned a hairdressing shop next to the cafe. One day I went these to have a coffee and Lillian Frank was sitting near me having her coffee and I pulled my old Motorola mobile phone from my pocket and placed it on the table beside me. All of a sudden Lillian got a fright and said that she thought that She thought that my mobile phone was a pistol that I pulled from my pocket. Toorak is full of snobs that think they own everything in sight, and will be the first to whinge if someone parks their car in their street. The most miserable people in Australia live at Toorak. They think they are superior to other humans. Whenever they have a hard rubbish collection in Toorak there is nothing good that they toss out because they are way too stingy to buy anything good. Their houses are empty and they kept all their money in the bank and do not want to spend any of their money. They have nothing to toss out because they are miserable bastards!
This is a great live version. More of their other less known songs are fantastic: Hotel Hell, Every Chase a Steeple and BBBBBB Bogie among my favorites!
None of the young people of today would have any idea what the South Yarra Arms is. It used to be a pub on the corner of Chapel Street and Toorak Road, South Yarra intersection in the early 1970’s and prior to that, but it got sold and was demolished by property developers who put a big modern building there in its place. They used to have metal knights wearing armour at the front of the old building. Who was the Toorak Cowboy? Was it written about anyone well known like Molly Meldrum perhaps, because back in those days he lived somewhere down that way before he moved to Richmond. Perhaps the song was written about Michael Gudinski who also lived in the area and was connected with the band? Only the songwriter knows who he wrote it about.
@@tmnl8037 He was clever and wrote about what he saw . Amusing that he thought it was cringeworthy sometimes because Carlton did not have the mystique of Chicago. For me it was places I was aware of and identified with. Fact is Greg/Skyhooks are authentic the Yanks do not understand authenticity . Red wrote a couple and Bongo later . But Greg the Master Writer is my main bass influence.
One of Australia 🇦🇺 greatest bands - songs of Melbourne/ Australia 🇦🇺 were ground breaking - as good as INXS / AC DC . Like icehouse should have been international 🇦🇺
When the band fired they fired Bob was an excellent choice for the day Good band live. Then Oils AC/DC Oils OMG.Aussie's did produce its own sound its live in the pub Friday and the bands were tight.
Titch Moynihan Your comment only goes to prove that you never saw them live or listened to any of their albums. They were the tightest, most original and versatile bands of the 1970s. I was privileged to live through their whirlwind conquering of the Australian music Industry. You sir have no idea of which you speak.
@@andrewmacdonald6999 wouldnt it be great if someone could get them to do a tour ... but who to take Shirls place, someone who can sing the high notes maybe, someone may have the moves too. But alas its just a memory on you tube. For now at least.
76' @ 15 years old. No need to say more! We miss you Shirl!

They were a breath of fresh air.
Fantastic! Wish I were back in 1976. What a magical year with Skyhooks at the forefront
I was there but still wish I was back there in time, some of the best times of my life❤️😊

Apologies to your little brother 😂
What a brilliant Aussie band- fantastic musicians- great memories
Back in those days an SUV was called a Toorak Tractor.
A great band. Nice to go back down memory lane.
Best, most original Aussie band ever.

Me & my sister and her girlfriend were there for that show
Loving Shirl's dancing at 3.05

Greg Macainsh wrote about what he saw in his own environment and was the Australian landscape .
Greg wrote most of that band’s best songs and made more money from the royalties.

I love the lady accosting Red @ 2:51 (ish)... back when you could still do that :(
This is very well shot.
And the 'Hooks.
That girl who grabs Red, is so me in another life! I would have let go after getting my kiss from him though. I'd have fainted. LOL. :D
I love it... Red gets the girls... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rest peacefully in hevean shirl
You obviously didn't live thru the 70's Ed Berger, you must be too young to appreciate who great they were back then
Ohh, Ed Berger - sorry it'snot Justin........................
No longer relevant I know, but Shirl was unique.
2:50 lol Redmond :D
Shirl your missed
First song played on 2 JJ you just like me cos I'm good in bed
To say this band is shitfull would be an understatement !!
According to your subjective opinion.
That's right !
Ed Berger to say your a keyboard troll would be an understatement... people like different kinds of music...for different reasons.... "that's right"
Stalker !
D Murray Yeah he doesn't get it - too closed minded. Originality frightens people.
This is absolute rubbish. No wonder they never had a hit outside of Australia and New Zealand

i wish i'd been around to see this band live. 2016 an they're wonderful still!!!
