This episode is a special case as you may have heard. The original videotape recording of this episode was recorded over (as many were) due to the expense of videotape at the time. A black & white film transcription copy made for export purposes was thankfully made from the videotape. This film copy is the one you'll have seen in b&w. However, because of the way colour TV works there is noticeable (but not distracting) very fine pattern superimposed on top of the picture when viewed on a black and white monitor/TV. This fine patterning is undecoded colour information. This patterning ended up on the film copy of this episode. Someone in recent years had the bright idea of trying to decode this patterning on the film copy to recreate a colour picture. It requires a clever computing process which then does most of the work but also requires some human input to adjust for colour errors while the process takes place. While this was done for this episode the picture was also digitally 'cleaned up' which is why there are no film scratches noticeable.
