As a German i have to say that Philip Madoc speaks fluent German with almost no accent. I first thought he would be a German actor, immigrated to the UK or hired for the skit. When i became suspicious because of the accent and so i read the comments and saw his name (and noted it). After a bit of google investigation (without any use of violence, i swear) i found out that he studied linguistic sciences on the University of Cardiff and later German and Russian in Vienna, where he got as the first foreign student a degree as translator. He spoke 7 languages (English, German, Russian, Swedish, Albanian, Hindi and Mandarin). WOW!

Certainly one of the funniest ever clips in comedy history from one of the funniest shows ever in comedy. As well as the classic “don’t tell him, Pike!” “Pike- thank you!”, this has so many other absolutely unforgettable lines as well, like Pike saying to Wilson “He (Captain Mainwaring) said much worse things about Hitler” and asking Wilson if Wilson if he could have a nice word with the German captain and ask him if the Captain could take Pike’s name off the list, and Wilson replied he would indeed have a nice word with the Captain!”

All done in one take. Ian Lavender said he had to bite the inside of his lip to stop himself laughing. He said he bit so hard he drew blood. Most Dads Army was done in one take and you can see things going wrong such as Walker knocking Mainwarings phone off its base whilst talking and in one episode an entire prop coat stand collapses onto the floor of their lookout post leaving Jimmy Beck looking totally bemused. They just ignored it.😅

Absolutely - he made this scene one of the best from the whole series - and the one that everyone remembers from the past.
The comic timing is brilliant. Related to Ruth Madoc who appeared in 'Hi-de-Hi!' ?

I remember when Ian Lavender and Rick Wakeman were on Celebrity Mastermind. When John Humphrys--following the usual format for the show--asked Ian Lavender his name, a voice rang out from the darkness, "Don't tell him, Pike." I'm pretty sure that was Rick.

One of my favourite series. The regular actors were excellent but it was great to see Philip Madoc.
“He eventually spoke seven languages, including Russian and Swedish, and had a working knowledge of Huron Indian, Hindi and Mandarin. He worked as an interpreter ...”

That line, "Don't tell him Pike", gets me every time l see this clip from the classic comedy Dads Army, it was one of the greatest sitcoms the BBC produced. Looking at the faces some of the actors in the clip l can see they are trying so very hard not to laugh. Dads Army was a well written comedy series🎭
