  • Hello my friends,
    I really didn't expect so many of you to be interested in my zero-based budget process. But the response was overwhelming, so today I show you what I do.
    Keep in mind that this is what works for me. It may be very different than what works for you. I love spreadsheets and detailed plans. If that's not your style.....just skip to the next video.
    As I mention in the video, I actually took the Dave Ramsey training to become a financial coach. I learned so much about the phycology around why we, as humans, do and think like we do. It was fascinating and I've used those learnings both personally and professionally ever since.
    Also, DISCLAIMER: I'm not providing financial advice in this video. Just my opinion and the strategy that has worked for me. OK? Good....let's go!
    As always my friends, be kind, be brave, I love you and I'll see you next time.

    I used to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about money, and the lack of it when I was younger and married to my first husband. I totally understand why you discovered Dave Ramsey. That has influenced my life for the past 7 1/2 years since I divorced that husband. I have done Dave- ish but I am definitely better off now taking care of my own finances. I am so glad you did this video.

    thank you for this. First time a have seen someone showing a zero-based budget. I have a couple of observations though.
    You divide a month expenses (600$) in to weekly expenses (150$). Taking out 150$ cash to spend every week will have you missing 4 weeks of expenses in a year.
    A year is 52 weeks, so 52 divided by 12 (months) is 4,3 weeks, so each month is 4,3 weeks. That means, in the example, that the 600$ should be divided by 4,3 which comes to 140$ per week. If you take out cash every Saturday, then it will be 150$ times 52 weeks 7800$ in a year, whereas in the spreadsheet it comes to 600$ times 12 months which is 7200$. You will then be 600$ short in a year! You have plenty of extra so will not notice this through the year .... probably, but others might.
    A question....why not put the money in to savings, paying off debt etc. at the beginning of the month? That way the money is working even more for you. Lesser debt to have interest on, more time invested in stocks etc. When you have the budget (and stick to it) AND have an emergency fund then those extra money is just sitting there a whole month.
    Well hopes this makes sense. I have always had an interest in this (even spread sheets, haha) but it's only in the last 5 years that I have really gotten in to it.
    Thank you again, and it ended up being a loooong comment here all the way from Denmark.

    Zero based budgeting saved my wife and I's finances. Before budgeting, we were deep in debt with barely to no emergency fund and savings. Then in November of 2018, we had the "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired of being broke" moment. We decided to start budgeting using the Everydollar app and followed Dave Ramsey's baby steps, then after almost 2 years, we paid off all our debt, fully funded our 6-month emergency fund, saved money in all our sinking funds then started saving in our 401k. Praise God for Dave Ramsey's life-changing financial teachings!

    I've always been really good at budgeting not always as nicely displayed as yours sometimes just in a notebook notebook for the year I put even the little things if you schedule a haircut if you have dry cleaning to pick up if you have a repair that needs to be done people don't always think of those things and then their savings repaying portion is gone to those things they didn't think about. I am 100% sure that this should be taught and taught to all of our high school students they should have to pass this with a high grade it is one of the most important things besides knowing how to do a resume and an interview but kids today have no clue and they do not want to be bothered with paperwork or record-keeping record-keeping or budgeting they have no idea how to balance a checkbook or frenchtons they want to buy a car or even a small house they don't think about the other things like repairs insurance, maintenance, and all the bank fees an interest rate she would have something as small as yearly maintenance on your car or maintenance on your save furnace in your house the cost of landscaping monthly they only look at well it's a cheap loan on a car or small house the only wait kids are going to survive these days if they're taught these things and are willing to learn and there should be another class on how to stretch a dollar kids today think money grows on trees😂

    Thanks, Adelina! I track my expenses every day. For the most part, I use cash and will get a receipt for the transaction so I can add it to my daily tracker and state what the money was spent on -- groceries, pharmacy, etc. I use a Visa card that is linked to my checking account and those purchases are also part of my daily tracking. There is no credit card balance carryover. In addition, I call my bank every morning and I know exactly the amount of money in my checking account....every single day .... and that is on my daily tracking sheet as well. Finally, I know the difference between "needs" and "wants" which means I spend far less. Some days, I spend nothing for the day! Wishing you and Miss Sophie all the best, as always!

And I'm very lucky and grateful that I've got and done all the right things--no debt, emergency fund, retirement accounts--but my system is all pretty much in my head. We do not include minimum credit card payments in fixed expenses - because - we only use a credit card when we have the cash in the chequing account to pay it before the bill is due. The interest rates on credit card debt are astronomical, and it adds up fast.

    I think Virgos and Capricorns are a lot alike. Many years ago I set up a holiday account with my bank. It was called a Christmas club account. You would put money into it each month and in November you would get the balance with interest. I did it to save for property taxes due in December and April. Long story short, my current mortgage now includes property taxes and insurance. I still have the holiday account set up. Each year I increase the amount by $50 per month. Currently I deposit over $700 per month. I don't miss the money because I don't see it. Also my gas and electric companies have programs where they average out a year of service and divide it into 12 months. That way your monthly bill is the same each month. I like your cash idea and will implement it. I also work from home now and save so much. Thank you for an amazing video.

    Thank you so much for this Adelina:) Some years ago I began a spread sheet to record expenses and days when bills are due but did not take it to the next level as you have done. I will now do so!!! Like you I love to see records, graphs, lists, anything which helps me feel more in control of my life in a world where so much is out of our control. However, living in the UK I am finding that prices of energy have gone mad over the last year and grocery bills are increasing weekly. I never know what I am going to have to spend. May I ask how you adapt to that? Would you suggest making a % allowance extra each week to the whole budget to cope with the ceaseless increases? I get very thrown by this as my expected budget keeps becoming redundant. I try to shop frequently at times when I know reductions are made and often save a lot by doing that but then I give in and buy something I did not need or want just because it is reduced or simply because I am in the shop and things look enticing. Makes me feel very weak.

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife
      @myBIGtinyhouselife  Год назад +4

      Hi! I like your idea of having a just in case amount. I kind of do that because I often don't spend all of the weekly cash each week so whatever's left gets tucked away for a week when there's an unexpected increase in prices or a good sale I want to stock up on. I make it a challenge to not spend the whole $250. It's comforting to have those extra dollars set aside. It's a crazy time right now. I'm buying frozen fruit and veggies when fresh costs are too high. Still nutritious and usually much less expensive. Also making things from scratch ahead in bulk, like the bulk corn bread mix, i think saves $ and time too.

    I love seeing how you keep track of all your money. What system do you use for the spreadsheets. Is it Excell or which program? I need to get better at this. Hard to do as you said with someone else in the house. My partner spends too much money. I actually do try to keep exact track of my money also. Love seeing it on paper or a spreadsheet. You are always so helpful and lots of information. I just adore you.

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife
      @myBIGtinyhouselife  Год назад +2

      Hi! I built it in Excel but have it opened in Numbers on my Mac for the video. I've put a link in the show notes to a downloadable template. It's hard if a partner has different spending habits. That where cash could actually help. Each person gets their 'fun' money in cash each week and doesn't have to account for what they do with it. Of course that only works if they don't also use their debit/credit cards. Good luck.

    Very useful, very interesting, and not boring! But I am a virgo also lol. I learned about Dave Ramsey a few years ago and his principles literally saved and changed my life! I became debt free with the exception of student loans, and one high balance credit card (yes mortgage free also) a year and a half ago, but last year had an unexpected health issue that landed me in $8,000 medical debt :(. So digging out of that now. I would love to know if you have a recommended video on how to create a budget spreadsheet (basically the formulas) - I think that is what I am missing. I only use one simple spreadsheet at my job - and someone else created it lol.

    We started with Dave as well. His thoughts are great and work super well. We just didn't like the cash envelop thing. Such a hassle, DH worked out of the house and if he didn't take grocery cash with him, he couldn't stop on the way home to pick up a few things. I know, better planning on our part would have helped. We left Dave, and moved on to a program called YNAB. Absolutely love it! ;) Thanks for the video! Edit: actually we started with Gail Vas Oxlade. :)

    Thank you Adelina, this is so helpful!! I'm paying off a bit of debt and saving for a down payment on a tiny home. What would you suggest if my income is seasonal, or more weighted in the summer months? I need to save some of it for expenses for the coming months when income is more lean. Plus I'm starting a new business for my off-season, and really don't know how much I'll make. I guess I'll have to make more than my expenses once the summer money runs out... !

    Good idea, but you always do. I hope Keaton is doing fine. I heard a story on the news. About some crazy, lazy Americans. People are using the insulin pins for weight loss. Not to control their blood sugar. Also they were willing to pay big bucks for the medicine. And people are now going in Canada,in the B.C area.😳🤪
