Thanks for the great video. I've been doing this for about 6 months and there always seems to be more to learn. And a different way to do it. Lots of good information from you. Thank you.
Thank you for this video!!! I have been doing leatherwork for 12 years now and it was still good to see how YOU use the tools. Your idea for the foam and cardboard base to use when drilling holes in thick leather was really great!! Thank you for sharing all of this. I had a $120 pair of boots that were bright RED! After watching half of your video I ordered some of the Oil Dye and dyed them dark brown with great success. I am NOT a red shoe person! You Rock!!! Thanks for sharing.
That was a great video that just about sums up everything your going to need to start out in leatherwork, it will help some one who is just starting out in leatherwork a lot, one thing you mentioned that I thought was right is the cost of the tools and it's not a cheap hobby, I think I have spent about £500 so far and still spending on tools, not sure what that is in dollars, All the best John.
Thank you. Learned a lot about leather tools. Good point about working your way up. Had to with just about every thing I do in my shop. (Primarily woodworking) When leave it, for last time, there'll be list of "want to have". Still adding, a piece at a time, when "need to have" comes. But, only after "making do with what you have" doesn't get the job done. BTW, my first work bench was a old maple kitchen table. :-) Beat up after 40+ years, it's the table beside my computer, as I type.
Very comprehensive video ,couldn't ask for better ,and I must be a mug cause I keep finding these expensive hobbies ,and in spite of all your and other warnings am going in anyway lol.thank you for all your hard work ps in answer to John Wellings above comment 500 pounds is about 800 dollars US .Oh and he makes great sheaths,I got one.Regards Tom Adair.
Hi. Thanks, this video has been incredibly informative. I just recently, basically yesterday, decided to teach myself how to work with leather. I would like, to start of with "steam punk" wrist bands and possible modifying leather boots later on. Would the wrist bands be a fairly easy to start to learn on. I love working with my hands and would love to get in to this craft as a weekend hobby. Greetings from South Africa.
Great video, very informative! I have a question though, what does make the leather piece stay stiff and holds it shape? is it the leather thickness or some sort of treatment?
Those curved blades are made by Warren Cutlery for wood carving. You can buy a set w/ handle on eBay for under $20. On the WC site, a 3pk of blades is under $4.
Hey Justin, excellent informative video, thanks! I have a question about the X-acto knife you used for the Tandy curved blade. I know X-acto knives come in two dia. sizes, would the Tandy blade fit in either one? Thanks in advance.
thank you for this video! you answered few questions i had..now for copper rivets some refer to gauge for the size. if they say #12 is it bigger than #9 or vice versa?I love your work!! Ciao
I learned a lot from watching your video. Thank you so much for sharing and I wish you luck on finding a bigger workstation. I know that pain, haha. :)
hi thank you for sharing this here, I'm new for the leather crafted,I have a question about the Tandy industrial knife blade. I got the blade from Amazon but they don't fit in my X-acto knife holder:( what kind of blade holder you're using with that blade? thank you
Great video thanks for putting i up for us and you are all to right on the cost to getting starting lol I just got started about a mouth ago and I am past the 250 mark but I do not go to just Tandy thank goodness I use E-bay and Amazon as well you can find so tools and such a bit cheaper if you search for them I have all most got them all and it has cost me about 600 or so I do not have all but just what is needed to start with so if any one want to get started just get the basic to star with then get the rest all the best to you all.. :>
i was thinking of getting into leather crafts. as i am slowly but surely becoming a severe watch freak i thought i'd start by making watch straps. is this a good place to start? it looks to be just the right balance of challenging and accessible
I have the pliers form of eyelet tool and have been after the kind you have there because of certain l areas I cant get with the pliers type I have tried for years to get the type you have their but no one seem to sell them, where did you get your? including the tools for snaps?
Hello just watched this video because I want to start making leather goods..I like making my own things when I can like now I make my own jigs and custom paint my own Crankbaits for fishing..I definitely am going to start making my own leather goods and I was wondering if the membership to Tandys is worth the money it cost to join? in other words would a man save more by getting 50% off of everything you buy with the membership or going ahead and paying full price? I guess it would depend on how much I bought which I would be buying everything I need to do the work..Also how much is the membership and where did you get the work station that the Dremmel hooks to?? Thanks.
If your just making things for yourself then the membership isn't worth it. Just buy the little bit of leather your need, but if you plan on making a bunch of stuff for others then invest in the membership.
Hey, Which size cooper rivets you use? And setter also. Cause i think you already find the average one, that fit good for most stuff. I want to use them with 3/4 and 5/8 swivel trigger hooks on key loops..I got really confused, when i tried to order some..Really don't want to miss when order something that doesn't fit..
***** Thank you for the answer! So actually it's the smallest the osborne producing. Can you also tell me what is the diameter of male and female parts?
***** And also, do you know, what is the difference in rivet setters, cause i don't get what differs between different models? can you punch number 12 with the bigger number 9 setter for example..
***** Thank you for the answer! So actually it's the smallest the osborne producing. Can you also tell me what is the diameter of male and female parts?
I am new to this. I like your vids. Would like to know how to contact you to get you to make me a sheath for my bk2. It would give me a good sheath to study from.
You may want to check out other providers. Tandy isn't bad however unless you have access to their stores, their leather is not quality leather, it can be sub-par. However, companies such as Zack White, and Waterhouse are pretty good distributor of leather. Tandy can be cheap (in quality). They do ship and sell very bad leather that is absolutely unusable. However, the above two companies will make sure that you get you're moneys worth.
If someone it starting up and looking to spend a few hundred it's worth spending the $150 to get the discount even if someone just keeps the discount for the first year or two of getting started.

You are a true master of his craft, you could not record the video as you work with sliker for Dremel?
Great video, do you sell the danglers? I'd like a dark brown for my knife sheath.

I can't decide whether I should buy the Tandy membership
If you plan on making items to sale on a regular basis then it's worth the money. If not then I wouldn't personally do it.
i was thinking of getting into leather crafts. as i am slowly but surely becoming a severe watch freak i thought i'd start by making watch straps. is this a good place to start? it looks to be just the right balance of challenging and accessible

Good vid.

I honestly don't know because I don't own the larger one. I only use the smaller of the two.

Where can I find a workstation to add to the dremel ?
On Foot
Dremel makes a drill press accessory. Lowes & Home Depot sells them.
Do you still have the beginner Leatherwork tools video posted? I can't seem to find it.
