My son had his nomination interview with the panel of our district congressman. He was told by the interviewers that they will only nominate one candidate for West Point, one candidate for USAFA, and one candidate for the Naval Academy, but multiple candidates for the Merchant Marine Academy. Why do they only nominate one for each academy except USMMA when they can nominate 15 candidates for each academy?
This is only speculation on my part.................. Maryland is a very competitive state for all the DoD academies. As you know; with DC, Annapolis, and all the other military installations and facilities there are a lot of people who are interested in attending a Service Academy. It could be that each Senator has it's allotment of students in each of the DoD academies. However, with that said you think that with 15 slots that they would have at least 5 more openings. So, I would ask the staff directly. USMMA is not a DoD academy and traditionally doesn't fill all their slots. Unlike the DoD academies a candidate can request a nomination from any congressional district in their state, so that would be 8x10=80(Congress) plus 2x10= 20(senate) or 100 nominations for Maryland alone. That would be 1/3 the class at USMMA. BYW "10 noms" is not a mistake, the new law of "15 noms" only applies to the DoD schools. if you a familiar with my channel you might have seen the the videos that I made on these two subjects, see below. Good luck! #0f Nominations. ruclips.net/video/WrX7sKnBymg/видео.html USMMA. ruclips.net/video/-fJzdgvnu8A/видео.html
@ My son misunderstood it. The congressman is filling one vacancy for each of the DoD service academies and the congressman can nominate 15 for each vacancy. Thanks for clarifying the 10 noms for each USMMA vacancy/slot.
We live in Maryland.
