Great seeing you both again. Am catching up on your vlogs. Great to see you managed to escape the lock..... Its renowned for those difficulties at times.
A very Happy Birthday dear Dawn! Narrow boating isn't all fun and games. It can be treacherous if you're not experienced, but you handled it quite well. Take care, be well until next time we see you two ~ Lacy, Mike & Hamish🤗💕🐾
Thanks for the update TTY & me Dawn. Entertaining yarn the way you tell it Peter. Glad you got out to tell the tale. Always glad to see you both pop up.
Not the most 'interesting' vlog we've ever done. But definitely highlighted what can go wrong! Next weeks video is back to banging and clattering as we get some jobs done on the boat.
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget - Oh, this was very interesting - and scary! Glad it turned out to be more of a hiccup that makes for a good story than the disaster it could have been! Tunisia must have been fascinating, what a wonderful way to celebrate an important birthday!
Great video Peter and good of you to share the problems you experienced, some would avoid that for sure🙄. We all have problems and watching how other people tackle issues can help others if they find themselves in the same situation. Glad you back to vlogging look forward to the next one 👍
We got caught in that same lock a couple of years ago. I did report it to CRT but I'm not hopeful of it being sorted any time soon. We managed to go up easily, but I approached the lock entrance at relative speed (not knowing we would have a problem). Coming down we got caught in exactly the same fashion as you did. It wasn't on the actual gates, it was in the collar around (protecting) the gate that we were stuck on. I dropped the lower pound and flushed the boat through with a blast from the top sluices. We've been through many other locks on the system since that were marked with warnings for boats wider than 6'10" and not had a problem. Just that one so far! Out of interest, ours is a hull from Wigan Boats. Whether they are known to be slightly wider at the bow, I don't know...
Yes we got stuck on the collar part as well. So far we have done around 30 more locks and no issue so far. So fingers crossed it is just that one that has the issues. Someone else has commented saying it’s the pressure from the reservoir that’s putting pressure on the locks there and slowly closing them up… As for CRT sorting it apparently it took years for them to sort the other one in there that was causing issues - so not too likely they will do this one until they really have to.
Hello Peter and Dawn, it's good to you see you both again having some fun cruising. So, you went on holiday and did all that memorable "fun stuff"? Isn't it amazing how your life can change abruptly in one minute's time? I'm glad your boat came loose as easily as it did to spare you the embarrassment of being stuck all day. Thanks for doing the video. Happy Birthday Dawn!!!
O dear o dear, be happy that your t4 will be returned, my t5 has in the garage for 2 plus years, part not available, happy birthday Dawn 21 with experience. Please be safe and enjoy your trip, looking forward to your next vlog
And I thought all narrowboats were a standard size. Ah well, you learn summat new every day. Happy birthday Dawn. Dying to see the inside of the boat. 🙂
Happy belated birthday Dawn - 21 again 😉 Phew, whoa, that must’ve been terrifying, thank goodness for cheeseburgers 😅 looking at it in a positive light it was probably a good learning curve for you, glad it all turned out ok in the end xx
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget Great to hear you managed ok then a minute later I realised you were going in the easy direction. When you have to go UP the flight then you'll have an experience. Any way happy cruising and look forward to your next video.
Look out for the outwash from the bywash wiers at Tyrley locks. You line the boat up nicely and the outwash flow knocks you sideways. Stunning scenery though.
The trip up Tyrley locks was 'interesting' to say the least! The Bywash throws the boat all over and at the moment the towpath is a complete mud bath! But, yes its very pretty scenery - so just about makes it worthwhile!
Yes you are looking well Dawn, very eventful few weeks then phew.you don't do things by half lol. lets hope the rest of your trip has plenty of things happen.only joking lol .as long as you both stay safe ,always love your channel.
Sorry to hear about the width issue. It's an older boat. Is it being human, so a case of middle age spread? Under the new CRT licence rules if your boat is even a hair over 7ft wide you are classified as a wide beam for licence fee calculation. Take care, paying a wide beam fee for being a gnat's whisker over size as a narrow beam would damage your name as a "Tight Yorkshireman"!
The boat is registered as 6’10” wide (as it was built). So standard licence is payable. I think as suggested though it may have bellied slightly over its aging years….
Hi both, good to see you back. Take care out there. Do you know if the boat has any overplating, as this can cause problems in some narrow locks. Looking forward to future vlogs 😊
As far as we know there’s no overplating - it was the metal ‘rubbing strip’ that runs round the top of the gunnels that caught. Touch wood the 20 (plus) locks we’ve been through since haven’t shown any sign of trouble…
We are in a few groups on facebook, Narrowboat Owners Group, The Friendly Narrowboat Forum and 12volt Boating Group are three good ones to join. Usually asking questions or searching previous posts gets answers to most queries. Enjoy your cruising when you get going. 😁
They rebuilt the first a few years ago because that one was even tighter but they won't spend the money to do all of that flight it's well known for catching boats
Peter and Dawn - glad all worked out fine, it might be worth checking the max beam of your boat (usin😢g 2 plumb lines and a long pole). We had the same problem when we first bought our boat (different lock) and we found we were over 7ft beam at the bow (sorted now with some very clever metal removal and welding).
A couple of string lines and tape measures and we seem to have bellied slightly to just shy of 7ft in the middle. So far no other issues but I was ready with the grinder if needed!
I’m sure the thousands of people who subscribe to the channel and watch the videos we produce every week would probably disagree with you… but thanks for the feedback. 👍
Why are you critical of this, it's a fact that boaters can and do have problems sometimes, and Pete and Dawn are no different. Lovely people, who are sharing their experiences if you don't like it, don't watch.
All I can say is great to have you both back safe and sound and the boat too!!
Thank you - 'normal' videos resume next week!
Great to see you back on line, with your new boat. Good luck.
Thank you!

Hopefully we won’t have too many of these dramas and the summer trip will be lots of fun. 😀

They pretty much are ‘all’ built to 6’10” - some belly a little in the middle as old age creeps up on them.
Lucky escape there. All the best.
Yes, not a situation we want to be in again!

Nice one Pete , I did the hurlaston flight a week after I brought my boat, it was the first lock
Flight I ever did 😊😊👍🏼
Good job your boat fitted through better than ours or your boating adventures wouldn't have got very far!
Dying to see how you manage at Tyrley locks. I dread it every time I have to go through and the boat suffers every time. Hope you manage it ok.
Tyrley locks made for a interesting day - The Bywash is brutal and the towpaths are complete mud baths at the moment!

Yes, Dawn gets a lovely tan by just looking at the sun... I however burn to a crisp as soon as temperatures get above 20 degrees!

@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget thank you, I'm already on the 12v group for electrical purposes but tha ks for recommending the other 2 👍
Just to ask. What make is your Narrowboat
We have no idea... the maker is unknown unfortunately.
That thumbnail looked worrying, glad it all worked out OK.
For an hour or so whilst stuck we were VERY worried... fortunately it all ended well though (thanks to the guy eating a cheese burger!)
Nice to see you both back again. PS Are you sure it wasn't the fenders?
Definitely not the fenders…

Yes, we've heard since that there's been issues for a long time with Hurleston locks...

I got stuck in the lock because the walls I had to abandon my trip
