His channel, Skywarrior Media, is dedicated to the creation of accurate and authentic historical videos. Part 4 covers VMF-214's first combat tour under the leadership of Maj. Gregory Boyington during the late summer and fall of 1943, when they fought intense air battles in the Central Solomons.

    The series features rare archival photographs and film footage, together with the concise narration of historian Bruce Gamble, to tell the history of Marine Fighting Squadron 214 in the Pacific War from 1942 - 1945. The squadron fought in the Solomon Islands at such fabled locations as Guadalcanal and Bougainville, with many missions over Japanese strongholds such as Rabaul, New Britain.
    Special emphasis is placed on Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, leader of the Black Sheep Squadron through its most intense combat tours. He flew P-40 Warhawks with the famed Flying Tigers before leading the Black Sheep, earned a Medal of Honor, and remains the highest scoring fighter ace in Marine Corps history with 28 official victories.
    Strong emphasis is also placed on the stories of the fighter pilots who served in VMF-214.
    As the creator of Skywarrior Media, Bruce Gamble has gathered the most accurate and authentic archival footage available-some in color. Many rare clips feature famous World War II aircraft such as F4U Corsairs, F4F Wildcats, F6F Hellcats, P-40 Warhawks, A6M Zeros, SBD Dauntlesses, TBF Avengers, B-17 Fortresses, B-24 Liberators, B-25 Mitchells, G4M Bettys. Many scenes include actual gun camera footage of intense aerial combat. Other scenes feature famous ships such as the aircraft carrier USS Franklin, and there are several depictions of aircraft accidents and crashes.

      Seems very difficult for people now to call the F4U what its' nickname was in that time!! They were "WILDCATS'!! No skin off from the prodigious reputation of the Wildcat to have the superior Hellcat and later the Bearcat follow the naming pattern!!

    Outstanding video, it's the first one I've watched and I'm going to go back and watch the previous. I've been a huge Boyington fan my whole life starting as child when the series came out. I did have a friend who worked in the National Archive many years ago who said he had seen a document that stated while Boyington was flying with the AVG he only had 2 confirmed and 1 probable in China. That with the 5 he claimed on his third mission with no other witnesses makes me wonder what the actual truth of his total. I'm not trying to be the bad guy but I do have doubts of the authenticity of his record...

    • @skywarriormedia
      @skywarriormedia  3 месяца назад +1

      Boyington was a superb warfighter and combat leader. But he definitely had his flaws (don't we all?), and veracity was not one of his strong suits. He once described himself in an interview as a pathological liar.

    Could you please tell us the types of Corsairs they used. When did they switch over from the birdcage into the 1D?

    • @skywarriormedia
      @skywarriormedia  3 месяца назад +3

      That's a trick question, lol. During the two combat tours led by Boyington, the Black Sheep flew F4U-1s ("birdcage") and F4U-1As. Both versions were used, with more -1s in the first tour. Gradually those were replaced, but the birdcage version was still in use during Boyington's 2nd tour. The -1Ds didn't appear until 1944 and mostly went to the USN and USMC carrier-based Corsair squadrons. These details will emerge in future episodes.

      @@skywarriormedia - Oh No! Robert Conrad in his F4U-4 WAS NOT accurate? LOL! No wonder, I like the TV show more as well as the older bubble roof P-51Ds. Hey, once you get done with Corsairs, I'd love to hear the story of P-51s in the fight against Japan. I thought they were only uses in Europe but I read or saw a video that some made it down there. Also, I didn't know about the B-24s being used in your video - cool details mostly lost to History - now preserved.

    One outstanding aspect of your videos is the exact use of film that fits the narrative. It’s so common to watch documentaries that use inaccurate film with the story, like Hellcat footage while describing the Guadalcanal campaign. It’s as annoying as it commonplace. None of that on Skywarrior Media! ❤

    • @skywarriormedia
      @skywarriormedia  3 месяца назад

      Thank you most sincerely. I'm in total agreement about the common use of inaccurate film, even in high-end documentaries. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of Corsair footage out there, so I have to use what's available.

      @@skywarriormedia At the 8 min mark the F4U comes in hot & high and "demonstrates" the most perfect bounced landing and (God bless him) recovery. Any tailwheel pilot has been there & done it (oopsy daisy) - but caucht on film and for historical record - for the Sea Bees!?. That's all my comment was about. Flying tailwheel airplanes, coming in nose high, 3 point attitude, hoping it all goes according to plan - blind as a bat to everything important - especially in a F4U. Only to realize it has NOT. Only 2 options. He choose the one requiring the lest to gamble. Notice how wide these runways are. Loss of directional control always a possibility. Decent landing after a combat mission and walking away, these guys had levels of airmanship and balls few have known.

    • @skywarriormedia
      @skywarriormedia  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for clarifying, and nicely put! In the early "birdcage" F4U-1 it was especially challenging to pull off a smooth 3-point landing. Add in some battle damage or painful wounds, and all bets were off.
