Part 7: The Real Pappy Boyington | VMF-214 | POW | Medal of Honor | Baa Baa Black Sheep
Black Sheep Chronicles Part 7: The Real Pappy Boyington. This is the final episode in the series about VMF-214 in World War 2, created by award-winning author and historian Bruce Gamble. Here is the unvarnished story of Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, leader of the Black Sheep Squadron. Shot down on January 3, 1944, he spent 20 months as a Prisoner of War in Japan, and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1945. He later struggled with alcohol addiction, but wrote the best-selling autobiography Baa, Baa, Black Sheep, which inspired the TV series Black Sheep Squadron featuring Robert Conrad.

I was Duty NCO on Firewatch at HQ of VMA-513 at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, one night when Far East Network broadcast the first episode of Bob Conrad in '' Baa Baa Black Sheep'' -- We all knew the legend of ''Pappy'' Boyington -- but the Hollywood characterization of drunken fratboy pilots had us in stitches. Long-haired actors could not capture the esprit of Marine Aviators even in the jungle on a diet of Spam, Kool-aid.and powdered eggs. We saw them everyday.

While it's technically true he died alone, it wasn't because his family abandoned him. According to an LA Times article, He died at 4am, and his family had spent the whole previous day with him, a hospital spokesman said.

To bad the movie rights to Baa Baa Black Sheep didn’t work out the first time, I think it might have been a great success with Robert Mitchum starring as Pappy. Mitchum at 6’1’’ and in his then fighting trim, would have made the character of Pappy even more imposing! As always excellent video Bruce!👍🏻😎⚓️🔱🇺🇸🏴‍☠️

Thank you for this fine series. I saw part of the TV series light entertainment set in a combat zone. My dad served in the Pacific as a Hospital ship Medic Part of a 8 enlisted 1 officer unit with regimental paperwork setup to ride troop ships out and back and work in station hospitals. Key bases they were at Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, Nouméa New Caledonia, Then onto 4 Bases on New Guinea Milne Bay, Buna, Lae and Finschhafen. From Buna he went up country with a government officer to recruit stretchers bearers as he was fluent in Pigeon English that was in common use in the highlands.

A friend of my family, LtCol John M ''Jack'' Long [USMCR-Ret.] had a similar 'Swashbuckler' experience. He was a young 2Lt on Cactus with Marine Scout Bombing Sqdn, VMSB-235. He flew the Douglas Dauntless SBD. In the 1990s, I was still corresponding with him. I found a squadron patch from VMFA-235, the ''Death Angels'' and sent it along to him. He wrote back thanking me but said his outfit wasn't called the Death Angels. He retired to a cabin on Lake Delton, Wisconsin. Years later, a friend loaned me his copy of''Tonya'' Greg Boyington's saucy comic novel about a group of volunteer American mercenary pilots in an Asiatic country, calling themselves, the ''Flying Sharks.'' Funny book. I enjoyed it immensly. Would be a great film, in the genre of ''Catch-22.'' On the overleaf, it was inscribed: ''To Jack and Cecily* Happy Landings, Greg.'' The tag inside the cover was from the Lake Delton Community Library. [*Mrs Long's first name was Ceile however. But Pappy wasn't sober, I'd wager.] How that book wound up at a used booksellers in Tucson is anybody's guess. I tried to buy it from my friend. He lost the book with the house when his older brother sold it after their parents' death.

As a auto tech I had a customer who's mother had dated Boyington. Bob told his mother that he was going to try and get Pappy to autograph his Black Sheep book. Virginia, Bob's mom an old prankster told Bob to tell Boyington "Hi dad my mother is Virginia" he thought Pappy was going to have a stroke so he gave up the gag and was warmly greeted Bob because he still cared for his old friend. Book autographed with a note to Virginia. True Story I saw the book. This was around 1990.

The USN had the Corsair in 1942. They either couldn't or wouldn't sort out its problems to make it a controllable carrier aircraft. That job was undertaken and accomplished by the Brits who bought many Corsairs after the USN had given up on it. The Brits corrected the landing gear from bouncing planes off of the deck during landings. They also devise a curved landing approach so the pilot could see around the huge nose of the plane. They did this and cut 8" off of the wings so the plane would fit below decks in their escort carriers. A move Vought claimed would make the plane unflyable. These moves all but made Britain's absence from the Pacific until 1945 bearable.

fantastic video series! answer to my hopes, quality, actual historical content with real archival footage! _(esp compared to SoS and fake history coming out of movie studios)_ It is indeed ironic, the Marines get the Navy's CAST OFFS... but in the Corsair they got probably the best all round prop fighter of the war, challenged only by the also massive P&W radial engined Thunderbolt. _(The Mustangs were great - easier to fly and cheaper to operate than either the Corsair or Jug - but not nearly as rugged, esp for ground-pounding)._ The Hellcats were also great - easier to learn and fly and much safer to land - but the Navy itself phased out the Hellcats and kept their Corsairs. In mid-1943 the Marines "got stuck" with the best warbird they could hope for!

@@skywarriormedia - _forgot to mention, with the Navy declaring the Corsairs "unfit for carrier duty," until the Brits - Royal Navy pilots - mastered the art of landing the hot, long "hose nosed" Corsairs on pitching carrier decks, the Marines had an aircraft that was nominally "better" - certainly faster - than the Navy's Hellcats!_ 😃 But the moment the USN carrier pilots copied the Brit's Corsair landing profile, the Navy immediately stopped sending Corsairs to the RN, lol!
