- Join me as I go plant shopping in Japan. In this episode, we browse the selection at a Daiki in Osaka. I would consider Daiki the equivalent of Walmart or Target in the US, with a wide variety of household goods.

Jungle boogie is a Xanadu and the pink plant is a dracena colourama I believe. I don't know much about silver swords but maybe it didn't look right because it needs to climb up and they had it in a hanging basket. Might be why the leaves were small. Pretty large selection for a store that isn't a nursery😀 thanks for these uploads
Thanks! I’m pretty bad with plant identification these days. I try to have a buddy with me so they can tell me what things are and I only have to say “oh, that’s pretty” haha 😂
I liked the Silver Swords hanging like that. I'm going to let my Tetrasperma's hang instead of staking, I will keep cutting them so the energy produces a thicker plant instead of trailing.
I love the silver sword and it’s gnarly funky ness, I think it’s the most full and attractive I’ve ever seen but I haven’t seen many of them. I’ve only seen one small one in person for $120! The pothos are suuuper cheap! Even the one with a trellis was cheap compared to US prices. The nursery hanging baskets with the pothos and ivy were super cute!
Those Hoya are gorgeous
Seems like great prices! You shouldn't apologize for not remembering names of plants. Afterall, you're Legends of Monstera...not Legend of all plants. 😁 Very cool series. This place is definitely better than the walmart or target or even the big box stores in my area. Wish I could see what you ate in Japan!
Lol, I should change my name to "Guy who goes around and looks at plants" lol. I will try to do a short Japan episode when I get back to making more episodes. Cheers!
The big tree like plant is a Ficus Audrey. You got the Ficus part correct. Those prices are very reasonable, I would go broke in that store...
Samee!! Hahahhaha
Haha yeah the prices here were really reasonable!
That is in fact what a hastatum looks like if left to its own devices. I kind of dig it to be honest.
I swooned when I saw those heart-shaped senecio radicans on clearance for $2.00 at 5:23 !!! I think I will take that idea and try to shape my senecio on a wired form. Too cute!!
2:40 I think it is a bird of paradise .
i miss japan now
That was fun! I lived in Asia for 6 years and I love Japan although I never lived there. I hope you got to visit some of their amazing gardens.
Thanks for the tour and sharing.
pink plant is dracaena colorama
Really interesting to see how that philodendron hastatum grows in a hanging basket. But I think like it's normal large growth better :) .
I love the cacti ongoshers sooooo big and beautiful!!!!
The Silver sword Although not attractive I would have torn that apart into cuttings , definitely profitable I paid more for one cutting in USA 🇺🇸
Sierra Baby I agree! All I could look at were all those leaf nodes. I’ve got 2 on moss poles and now I’m extra happy I did that! 🌱
Agreed, that silver sword would have been thoroughly chopped up in the US. I definitely would have. More plants, and more attractive plants at that.
21:30 take a look at the videos of „Desert plants of Avalon“. Lyn is putting out great content. She is my favourite youtuber and I’d love to see her being interviewed by you.
8:42 I think is Hoya carnosa krimson queen or princess
10:23 I think is a dracena
Since space is limited..are houseplants very practical
I mean if we’re talking straight practicality, are houseplants practical even with a large space? Watering regimens, pest control, humidity... it’s usually an impractical hobby for most people. But then again, a lot of things we do and enjoy in life are impractical 😆
Well my husband always asks Do you need that?..and I say yes for my mental health or No but I’m getting it anyway...depends on my mood😏
That's one knarly silver sword!
Grt tour, i m vry curious to know, how all plant doing well in a hall, only in artificial light???
Yup, just artificial light. But I think you should also consider that these plants aren't spending months and months in the store right? They are just there for some period of time between getting there from the nurseries to going to the buyers' homes.
Love this tour!!The philodendron silver sword the tag said philodendron silver metal so I guess it’s a different?
Nah, it’s still a silver sword / hastatum. It’s very common to see different trade names in Asia.
There are two prices. Before tax and after tax. For certain shops, tourists do not have to pay tax.
This price and selection is wayyyy more reasonable than in Tokyo... Definitely would rather live here then haha
Haha yeah Osaka is much more calm and affordable than Tokyo.
Oohhh That Silver Sord, is a chop an prop for sure. 😀 Jimmy, Do you really like Ivy? I have one I’ll send ya, cane in a mixed arrangement. Lol I wouldn’t go out an just buy one. 😀
I've had my share of Ivy, and my share of bugs with those Ivy haha, so now all the Ivy are gone lol
Daaaaaang that Daiki is so much nicer than mine in my neighborhood in Hiroshima! Jealous!!
I think this was the only one I came across during my trip lol. The only reason I went inside was because I could see the plant section through the windows from outside.
It is for sell? Looks kinda expensive is it?
Thanks! I really enjoyed this video! I always wonder how much more i'm paying for the plants yet again... would i really travel somewhere to get them cheaper? HELL YES! Can you bring home plants to the U.S. via airplane? I remember my mom brought some dried veggie plants from the Philippines and unfortunately they confiscated it. Then again it looked like Marijuana LOL
You would need a phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin to bring plants back abroad. Same certificate needed to ship plants.
@@LegendsOfMonstera thanks for that info!
14:35 does anyone know of those were variegated ficus Audrey or do the leaves look like that normally??!!
I think you are asking about the Altissima aka Golden Gem which is normal variegation for those.
Ficus Altissima
Thats really a big selection of plants. By the way i notice some people wearing masks others not. How is the covid situation in Japan?
I was there beginning 2 weeks of March. Lots of people were wearing masks but everything was business as usual otherwise. Less tourists and also the restaurants closed a bit earlier than usual, but otherwise the same.
Hoya's is so cheap compare here in Cali . I'll buy it all 😳
That tag on the silver sword said “silver metal. ” Are they the same ?
Yes. It's both not the name of the species but just a name it is given by the seller. The "real name" is philodendron hastatum.
I've learned that Japanese sellers and growers, and probably Asian sellers and growers as a whole, like to give really cool trade names to their plants lol.
They both sound super cool, don’t they?😎 Thank you for the information David, and thank you for the fun tour Jimmy!!
😍🤑
