That is actually a very good description of how telomeres work. Just enough technical discussion to be accurate, but lay-people can ignore that and hear the "they get shorter each time they are copied". Well done on walking the fine line between oversimplification and pedantry.

    • @DreamwithintheHeart
      @DreamwithintheHeart 5 лет назад +8

You are not wrong. The longevity noodles are actually pretty long, but the kicker is, when you eat them, you must not bite into the noodles. Cutting or severing the noodles is symbolic of cutting you longevity short, so most try their best to slurp.

I was a cop in a large US city for 7 years. I facilitated or witnessed literally thousands of interrogations and never once saw it used, nor heard of anyone using that “technique.” That’s one of many tv tropes that people think is based on reality for some reason. Even for that reason alone, I’m sure it would rarely work as even the dumbest of criminals would be wise to it.

"Happy Birthday" was first sung in Louisville, Kentucky, at one of the 3 houses together known as The Little Loom House.
The Little Loomhouse houses historic weaving patterns and teaches weaving on a loom that is small enough to sit on your lap. In one there are some 30 little looms set up as a floor loom is and is operated the same way.
A weaving society has members who curate the little looms, and they never fail to point out the framed newspaper article (Courier Journal) showing the article and picture of "Happy Birthday" first being sung.
This historic site, that was once an art farm, is worth a visit for history and for art. And make yourself a "mug rug" while you are there.

We don't translate it as longevity noodles though.
    We call it long-life noodles.
It was in a sit-com, this kid had his birthday and wanted a cake his father ( maybe was his grandfather I don't remember) said it's not traditional, he must eat long life noodle.
The ending of that episode was the father putting down a cake box while everyone sorta rejoiced that he relented.
When they opened the box, it was a plate of long life noodles .

      @@KaitouKaiju It is.
if you believe all the fiction written inside it word for word. XD
It starts off with the creation of the entire universe and all galaxies within it.
Unlike me when I say I am old... That's OLD!
So if the bible was in fact 100% true, and not a slightly engorged tale told by multiple people and their muddled points of view. Then that first chapter in the first book in the bible would make it the oldest story of all times. Since, it had to be written by either Adam, Eve, God, Satan, Or Michelangelo to be a first counting story of fact from someone who experienced it.
Because as the age-old adage goes. If you weren't there how do you know what happened? Since they, after all, were the only ones there anything not told by one of them would be in fact, fiction.
That... on the contrary makes it the first and oldest story ever told.
As for the binding of the book into one cohesive whole. That I cannot say with certainty when it occurred for the first ever time. But since the outer cover of a book does not make the stories age, but rather the time of writing and finishing ones full story does.
I would have to say my point stands.
And if indeed this were the case. The story was truly written by someone there and was a by all accounts true telling. (If you were to believe this person trustworthy and not a liar.) Then it really is the oldest tale on earth.
And to that I say...... They didn't have clothes... What... did they write it down on a leaf?
      Happy Knowledge hunting. XD

@@kitkatxk2814 According to tradition (and by Maimonides it's a core belief) the first 5 books of the bible were first written down by Moses who got it from God. And since then, the original Hebrew was copied over many many times with painstaking cafefullness to not change a single letter. Also, according to tradition, Moses taught the people the meanings of the words of the bible, and this has been transmitted though the generations. Also, as passed down through the generations, the first 2 of the ten speakings (ten commandments) were witnessed by the entire family of Israel as God spoke it to them.

Celebrating one's birth on their Saints Feast Day was common in some communities at least until a few decades ago. Sounds like in Europe, that the kids who first had birthday parties as they got older they wanted to retain that tradition into adulthood since it brought back pleasant memories. So over time birthday parties became for young and old alike.
A lot of children died back then so they were probably celebrating the mere fact that the kid was still alive.

    Birthday cakes are from IRAN?
And the chinese came up with it in parallel but ate birthday NOODLES. Maybe I'll do that for my next one, never been much of a cake person.
If the Chinese came up with it independently tho, did any other ancient cultures? In Africa or the Americas perhaps?
Never would've thought that our humble nation and its bakers actually played such a big role in popularizing birthday cakes in Europe and inventing the candles thing. We oughta remind people whenever they spout these stereotypes of us being no fun.
But it's kinda true like I have some Spanish relatives and they tell me that birthdays came alongside american media - they were still doing the catholic nameday thing up until recently, much like they used to celebrate three kings day more than christmas, which was copied off various older winter solstice celebration (why would you celebrate midwinter in spain? It doesn't get nearly as cold; In the mediterranian summer is the semi-barren season because of the heat)

The telomere thing is a good preliminary litmus test for if someone really is interested in the science of extending the human life span. Sometimes people ACT like they are curious about it or have done research, but if they don’t know what the hell is up with telomeres, I know they haven’t really looked into it, and any convo would be much more topical or philosophical rather than discussing actual possible ways to go about it, their flaws and little elegant solutions. Those are vastly different conversations, so having an easy way to know which one I’m about to wade into is important.

Hi Simon, this is something I’ve always wondered- how do nature documentaries get such good footage? Do they stalk these animals or just place as many cameras in scenic areas hoping that the animals walk into the shot? I can rarely get a good photo of my pets, so I can’t imagine how hard it is to film wild animals.

My guess would be bait. That would also most likely be denied. No, seriously, it's probably the result of having professional crews working in shifts 24/7 filming everything in sight, constantly. Then it goes to editing and the magic happens! Poof! 1 slick documentary. Or something.

Probably fake. If we could get the raw footage we'd hear the director calling cut and sending the cheetah and gazelle back to start positions.

GolfPrincessCL when I was a kid, feeding sticks, hotdogs, and marshmallows into roaring bonfires was a fun past-time! I think playing with controlled fires kept us from experimenting with fires alone and without supervision haha

I don’t think that people find it inherently pleasant. I think it’s the feeling of getting the rush of potential danger while knowing you’re actually pretty safe and that it’ll be over soon

I never understood the telomere shortening hypothesis. Considering many of the stem cells within the body which do the majority of reproducing have some telomerase activity, which should maintain the telomere length. Going on this same line of thought, the differentiated cells would then only need to proliferate a few times at most to serve their purpose before dying, becoming quiescent, etc. This scenario would be critical in blood, intestinal, reproductive, skin, and hair progenitor cells (and probably dozens more I can't think of) to maintain bodily integrity beyond infancy. So with all of this in mind, why do telomeres shorten?

So onomastic is more traditional than birthday? Good for me that always forget birthdays but always remember the day of the saint with same name of the person.
Saint Simon Peter's day is 29 of June, therefore happy onomastic in advance.

It's very likely that Pharaoh birthday is the day when he got a new child. The original hebrew in the bible (יום הולדת את פרעה) can be translate as "the day of the birth of Pharaoh", the strange sentence and the fact that there is no similar thing in the bible led to a common understanding that they celebrate a new Pharaoh birth rather than the birthday of the current one.
