Hello, I just want to say a Big Thank You for this video. I bought a SLK 170 and the vario roof was impossible to open. I succeed to perform a good diagnosis and fix my issue due to this very clear video. It was in fact the roof right black cylinder which was damaged and didn't press the "roof closed" microswitch in closed position. So Thank you to Top Hydraulics team.
I have a 1999 SLK230. My trunk lid would open, the the roof would unlock, but would not go down. After viewing your video, I discovered that both "roof locked" switches (S69/2, S69/3) were stuck down. They both had the "stiff bellows" problem that you mention in this video. I cut the bellows off of both switches and now everything works perfectly. When I need hydraulic parts, I will definitely be ordering from Top Hydraulics. Your videos with explanations are fantastic! Thank you! 🙂
Klaus is the man. Me being a bone headed American engineer I tackled my R230 roof hydraulic system replacement in an ill equipped shop. He cautioned me of the extent of the job. Several times. After I was drowning in my boneheadedness, that is a word, he answered my many questions with the needed detail and even offered encouragement as I realized what I had gotten myself into. That was three years ago and despite her many other issues related to suspension and "comfort" systems my R230 roof works flawlessly every time I open and close it. At first after I had understood the true engineering involved I was reluctant to use it much but I gained confidence and now do not think twice about lowering or closing it and it makes me grin like cool hand Luke these days. If you own a hard top convertible, this company and specifically Klaus is the only way to go if you are brave enough to tackle the job. Listen to this man. He knows what he is talking about. He even speaks bonehead.
Hahaha, thanks for the kind words! Just to make it clear to R170 owners, the R230 system is WAY more complicated than the R170 system described here, as the R230 SL-Class has eleven cylinders in the top, including the three for the retracting roll bar system and the two for the load assist system.
Klaus, what tool is needed to replace the micro switch on the driver roll bar area 06 slk 280? I've been looking into me and did not find switch removal process. Any help is appreciated.thx
I am in the process of completing the cylinder swap out having some difficulties… Klaus has been fantastic helping me through some troubleshooting the value of a company is not only what they sell but how they respond… I can't imagine any better effort to be sure I get my problem resolved… Thank you Klaus!
WOW! I am happy that I found your site Klaus. I have owned my 99 SlK230 since 2000, I've had to repair the acuators several times over the years and (replaced the seals and some micro-switches). Never knew you were out there. I have a new issue (pump reservoir is completely empty and can't find the fluid...weird) do not see fluid nor any signs of a trail in the trunk or headliner and do not smell any fluid. It closed slowly the last time I used it (months ago) tipping me off that something was amiss, so I have not begun a deep search yet. Can not smell anything or see anything. Thanks for all your work in making these videos...time and labor intensive I know. Regards, Roger
Klaus thank you very much for this wunderfull video!! You give us a very clear and detailed inside in the working of the SLK R170 varioroof. This video is very helpfull for troubleshooting!
Hi Klaus, thanks for an amazing video set. You stated that switch s69/9 should be the only switch not triggered when the roof is up and shall read 12 volts. Regarding switch S69/11, I assume that should also read 12 volts when the roof is up as well.
Hello, incredible videos! Great job, thanks. I’m not sure but I thought I would ask your opinion on a problem. I have no power at the VR red button. The 5 amp fuse keeps blowing. Ordered new relay for pump. Tested okay but replacing. Thanks for your RUclips help!
Hi I know this is old post but you are the most knowledgeable person when it comes to vario I know off , had read a technical documentation posted here and my best Google-fu, I'm not able to figure out why the roof won't fold. Windows go down along with rear triangle windows and then nothing. The latches are unlatched as I can release the pressure bolt on the pump and tilt boot back by hand. I stripped the boot lining and exposed the cylinders, but there is no leak. The latches are not getting locked after the hinge is in place. Bowdens feel with bit of too much slack when boot folded in rear position and little less when closed. Any reply is appreciated. Thanks in advance
great video thank you for sharing . i have SLK 2001 my problem is when i try to put the roof down windows all go down the trunk opens fully and then nothing else happens pump keeps running any idea what my issue could be many thanks
Best video out there.. thorough explanation like no other. My roof issue I am having is the roof top opens fine and it goes into the trunk but the trunk lid wont close over, from your video I learnt that the s69/11 switch could be the issue, is there any videos you have on how to replace that switch? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for asking. Indeed, the "roof down" switch S69/11 needs to be triggered before the trunk lid will go down. This particular switch does not normally break on its own. By chance, has someone recently "worked" on your main lift cylinders and accidentally broken the switch during cylinder removal? Here is our video on main lift cylinder removal, which shows in much detail how to access and remove switch S69/11: ruclips.net/video/9A2d4A3PyyE/видео.html. If nobody has been near switch S69/11 recently, then you may want to check on the "roof closed" switch S69/1. If it stays triggered While the roof has already retracted, then this would be illogical to the computer. Check whether this switch is possibly triggered by dirt caked around it. Here is the section of the video that shows Switch S69/1: ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html
Thank you for the quick respond. Thinking about it after you explained the s69/1 now would make sense if the control unit still thinks the roof still in the closed position. Will watch those two videos and check both of those switches, I just got the car so I dont know the history of roof work been done.
So finally got a chance to look at the s69/11, I found It not clicked in place properly so it was hanging in there on the lower mounting clip only. After installing in it right everything works normal now. Thank you for all the videos and help.
@@thegyptiandream Thanks for letting us know, congrats on getting your top fixed, and you are welcome. This switch does not come loose by itself, so someone has worked on your top before. It appears that someone has previously removed and re-installed the right main lift cylinder 1708000672 less than perfectly and they did not re-install switch S69/11 properly. Hope this was the only mistake they made on your SLK.
@@TopHydraulics that's exactly what it appears like that's what happened, yes I hope that's the only mistake was done during the repair that time. Honestly without your thorough videos and breakdown to the system I wont be able to figure it out at least that quick. Top of my list for any future top problems. Thanks again.
The s691 piece in your hand with the black cone what is that part number or piece called the passenger side cone broke. Also I told my dad about you guys you rebuilt his cylinders and got his Roof working. Great work! My 98 slk230 has no leaks and the broken cone on the passenger side. The truck lid won't raise to let the roof unlatch and go down. Any idea? Also that cone part for passenger side part number or name please.
The black cone on the passenger side’s front lock assembly is essential and the top won’t work properly if the cone is broken and doesn’t trigger S69/1. The trunk lid not raising is likely caused by the cone not triggering S69/1. The cone itself is part of the front lock assembly (I don’t have the part number handy) - best either use some ingenuity to fix it or buy a used R170 SLK top front lock assembly on eBay.
@@TopHydraulics i have the broken piece and will find a way to fix it for sure. But do you think that's why the trunk lid isn't raising? Windows go down pump runs. Trunk doesn't move. Checked all the cylinders no leaks pump is working and no leaks at the pump either. Any advice you can supply would be greatly appreciated. I know eventually I will have to send to cylinders to you once one fails on me.
Hi there Fantastic video and brilliantly worded. My newly inherited 1997 slk roof is now locked open and totally in the boot. Or the trunk as you might say. I cannot open it manually with the cables due to the fact that the passenger side one has snapped inside the trim and I cannot see the end anywhere. So I cannot get to any switches because everything is tightly in the boot. I believe the switch S697 is locked and S69/8 is unlocked because I can feel it when I try to pull up. I’m now convinced that the only way to get this unlocked is to maybe cut the trim on the passenger side out to access the broken cable, so I can release the catch. Any of your thoughts would be appreciated Best wishes Daren
If you open the boot the regular way, then you can still move the trim far enough out of the way to fix the broken cable and/or unlatch manually first, or possibly even unscrew the striker (that goes into the latch) from the trunk lid.
Hi there So impressed by the rapid response. Thank you very much. I will attempt the striker technique. I think that’s a great idea. Thank you again Daren. UK 🇬🇧
As we said in this video here ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html, we are covering the R&R of switch S69/11 extensively in our video on removal of the right main lift cylinder: ruclips.net/video/9A2d4A3PyyE/видео.html
Hello, can you help? The roof opened well, but when closing, the button beeped for the first time, as if the roof was not fully closed, today, when the roof was closed, the small window vents did not rise. What could be the problem? I tried to put pressure on the limit switch with a stick, the first time it helped, and then they didn’t rise again. I changed the limit switch in the windshield frame, it did not help. Help :)
Question, we have a 2006 Mercedes benz SLK 350, the roof stoped working however the message center is saying " roof opening" but is does not, however the trunk it doesn't want to open manually, we have to open with the key, also the front windows stoped going all the way up, you know those few extra inch. Do you think all of this is happening because of the roof issues?
A 2006 SLK350 would be an R171 chassis, which has different electronics than the R170 in this video. However, it is very likely that all issues you described are related to the computer reading that your top is not fully latched. By chance, has someone replaced the front lock cylinder recently?
@@TopHydraulics Hey thanks for replying to my email. So I notice in the message center saying "roof top opening" I could hear the pump motor activating but too weak to open or close, so I helped the roof close all the way and locked the mechanism by hand and the magic happened, the windows and the trunk work. My next question will be the top roof lock should lock by itself correct? if yes what could be the problem? and as far as the system being weak, most likely the pump is low on oil correct? Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions!
Do you know the M-B part number for S69/1 micro-switch and is there a replacement for the plastic cover/cone that actuates the switch? Thanks in advance. In the past you have been extremely helpful when I replaced all my cylinders and pump (2002 SLK 32 AMG). Been very happy with system until this switch started acting up and am more than relieved that it appears to be a very simple fix.
after further investigation, it is NOT the microswitch. It's the black plastic cones that are over the metal rods that make contact with the switch. The one on the s69/1 side (right side) was broken and partially stuck in the guide slot. The other side (left, no switch) is also broken, so no using that as a replacement. Any idea where I can get new plastic cones, or what the M-B part number is? Many thanks, Michael
@@michaelmoschella9857 The cones themselves are not available other than in a complete latch assembly. You could either purchase a used latch assembly on eBay or try to fix the broken cones. A potential fix would be reinforcing them with a metal dowel pin (or solid portion of a suitable drill bit) that you secure with epoxy.
@@TopHydraulics Thank you for the speedy reply, you have saved me countless hours searching the web for this part. Looks like my best bet is to find a used latch assembly or fabricate the plastic cones myself. For a temporary fix I attached a short section of poly tubing to the metal rod and that seems to actuate the S69/1 micros-switch allowing the trunk lid to close. Thanks again, you guys are the best!!
took your advice and purchased a used latch assembly on ebay. anyone have advice on removing cones from assembly or would i be better off just replacing the whole assembly?
Hello. My Cousin is owner of an r170. He has a very loud noise which is based on the Left Side of the trunk area. More exactly in the area of the Side. The noise is there even if the roof is opened or closed. And it comes between around 70 kmh and only goes away at around 140 kmh. Do you have any idea about that?
Hi I've a problem with unclipping latch S69/7 when car hit the pothole or bumps. I'm getting roof red button flashing and also a beeping signal. Is there any way to fix that? r170 2003. Thank You for your excellent support.
Sounds like a mechanical issue where either the latch is faulty (it would be easy to get a used one from a junkyard), or it needs to be lubricated to that it will latch fully, or you need to find a way to adjust the striker going into the latch such that it goes in a little deeper (probably just a millimeter).
The black, plastic cone is part of the front lock assembly. You could either try to fix the broken part by drilling perpendicular, well centered holes into both broken ends, inserting steel dowels and gluing the parts back together, or simply replace the whole front lock assembly with a used one off eBay.
Yes, guide pins would be the proper name and they are not available anywhere to my knowledge. You could either try to fix the broken part by drilling perpendicular, well centered holes into both broken ends, inserting steel dowels and gluing the parts back together, or simply replace the whole front lock assembly with a used one off eBay.
Thank you for this video. Now I have at least some clue to start troubleshooting why my trunk lid does not want to close down after the top is folded into the trunk. Trunk lid does close down if I get the top back up. It must be the S69/11 switch.
Agreed, the symptoms point at S69/11. Someone may have worked on your cylinders before and accidentally damaged S69/11 while taking the right main lift cylinder out, or it is not connected to the wiring harness.
@@TopHydraulics Just finished checking the switch S69/11. It popped out of the 2 circular clips. In fact the clips seem broken. I will get a replacement. I will figure out how to replace it. Looks like it is deep inside.
@@derekkchung That means someone must have damaged it when taking out the right main lift cylinder before. Here is more insight: See ruclips.net/video/9A2d4A3PyyE/видео.html There may be a way to push in the switch from the inside without removing a lot of parts first. After all, it only needs to be pushed into the frame and it then secures itself on the same tabs that broke before.
@@TopHydraulics Hmmm. I will try pushing it back in. I see most of the "pawls" of the clips are broken. I wonder how that happens and if a new one will be broken the moment it is installed. I just bought the car last week and the seller did demonstrate the top could go up and down and amazingly now it is broken. One more question if u don't mind. Can u watch video 4Qq0tKoLYFw. He had to adjust the cables to allow the top to separate from the windshield. I have the same symptom and I thought it was just lubrications. Should I remove the headliner to make the adjustment?
Hello. A question. I have a leak in the cilínders of moving the trunk lifters. I get new pack for oberhaul the hidraulic pistons but I don’t know how desassemble the pistons. Can you helpme send me a pictures or video show me how desassemble and assemble This pistons lifters. Thanks.
Thanks for asking. We believe in doing things right, and includes replacing the port seals where the hoses go in. "Overhaul kits" are a temporary solution at best and you want to ask whoever sold you that kit how to do the job. When we rebuild these cylinders we do a lot of CNC machining and the result looks like here in our video: ruclips.net/video/KwoKQhN4vhw/видео.html
My top is finicky when it wouldn’t close I found an incline waited then tried to close it and it worked! Does this mean my fluid is low in the trunk or is it the pump?
Thanks for asking. I believe you had previously written that you have a 2006 SLK280 and then edited your question. Is that correct? Model year 2006 is actually an R171 chassis SLK. The R171 roof is largely similar to that shown in our videos, but there are some significant differences. One of the major differences is that the pump is behind the seats, not in the trunk. Here is a video from a happy customer of ours that shows you the pump location and access to the pump a few minutes into the video: ruclips.net/video/KJW3DYDWcYA/видео.html You had also written that you have had the car for three years and that the top has been finicky from the beginning. I'm sure you can hear the pump running when the top is moving. In those instances when the top will not move for you, can you hear the pump running or do you get any alerts in the dashboard?
HELP!! 2001 SLK, no indication of any hydraulic leaks. Manufactured 11/2000. When I press the switch to put the top down, the trunk opens and the top won’t unlatch from the windshield. Pump does not run if you press the button as if to re-close top. Is there anything simple I can do to lubricate the latches? This happened a few times before and after she reluctantly unlatched, the hydraulics worked fine, down ads back up. I suspect microswitches s69/2 and s69/3, if it cannot be resolved with lubrication. Fluid level is at the upper indicator arrow, and fluid appears clean. No sign of any leaks anywhere. Car is in excellent condition with 74,000 original miles. I've had it 7 months and had no other problems in the 7500 miles I've driven it. Would appreciate any advice! Sir Carl
Seems my car had the top pump replaced (bought it after that) it takes a long time holding the switch to start operating properly. Then it works as it should Think it may have air on the system any way to “bleed” the pump? how to make sure if the rebuilt pump is deffective? thanks a lot
Hello Alex, thanks for asking. Does this hapen only when you are opening the top or also when closing? Have you checked the fluid level in the pump yet?
I just bought a 1997 SLK 230 and the top didn't worked. (leaking roof cilinder) I fixed it, but there is still one problem, the rear windows do not close. Do you have any idea what it can be?
The rear windows will not go up if the computer does not get the signal that the forward trunk locks are latched. This could be because something is preventing the trunk lid from closing far enough, or the locks need lubrication, or (most likely) because one of the release cables for the locks is not properly routed. Check whether the cable is getting caught somewhere.
@@TopHydraulics Today I checked it and the windows still do not want to close. I pushed the button from the roof and someone else pushed on the top side of the trunk, first on the right and after that the left side, but still nothing happened. We also adjusted the brackets inside it, so they were a little longer, but also that didn't made any difference.
Hi maybe you'll be able to help me. I have a 2002 SLK320 and the roof will not open. From closed, it will lift up the tailgate and then and try to unlatch the roof but it stops. pushing the red button to close it from THAT position does nothing, you have tp manually push the tailgate back down in order for it to lock again. I believe it is the roof windscreen microswitch (S69/1) that is the issue and needs replacing. Thoughts please???
Thanks for asking. I have five questions for you: 1) You are writing that the top is TRYING to unlatch in the front after the trunk lid has been opened. Do you see any movement at all from the front latch? 2) & 3) Also, you are reporting that the top does nothing from that position if you push the button to close the top. Does the pump motor run, or do you just get a flashing red light? 4) If (with the trunk flipped back) you manually turn the front latch as if to lock it some more, wil the system kick in again? 5) Pump: Is the pressure relief valve closed all the way? Bonus question: have you seen our videos on checking the front lock cylinder for internal bypass and on checking the pump?
@@TopHydraulics 1) Yes once trunk lid has opened completely, the roof moves back about 1cm on the the left side and 0.5cm on the right side. To me it seems as if it has unlatched on the left side only 2 & 3) Yes once it gets stuck in said position, pushing the red button forward to close roof will do nothing. The pump will run if you continue to pull it (open the roof). Pushing it forward (to close roof) will only give you the flashing red light 4) No once the roof is stuck, I am unable to operate the lock and unlock with the Allen key tool. Very stiff but this is because it is not sitting in the correct position (the roof has inched back open slightly) 5) Not sure of what the pressure release valve is? I will need to do some more research and Nope I just stumbled on your channel today and will definitely be watching all your videos on this topic.
Hi, I have a problem that maybe you can help me with. Sometimes when I open the hard top it doesn't close afterwards. I have to wait 45 minutes and then it closes. This does not always happen, only occasionally. I don't understand, it seems that you have to do some reset and after 45 minutes it starts to work normally. Do you have any idea what the problem might be? Thanks. Best Regards, Pedro
Thanks for asking. Does the electric motor on the pump get hot when you are opening the top? Does anything happen before the 45-minute wait period is over, such as the pump motor running when you push the button to close or at least the windows going down?
@@TopHydraulics The engine does not get hot. In the 45 minute period, nothing happens, nothing works. After 45 minutes, everything is back to normal and the roof closes.
Just to clarify: 1) Can you raise the windows after the top is down? 2) Will the windows come down again during the 45-minute wait period if you push the button to raise the top? 3) Any warnings or displays in the instrument cluster?
@@TopHydraulics In the 45 minute waiting period the windows open and close normally. No error warning appears on the panel. During the 45 minutes, when I try to close the roof, I press the button that keeps flashing and there is no movement to close the roof, nor do the windows move.
Thanks very much for the video, but my slk 230 r170, sometimes when am starting opening the roof, it is stopping it self, and proceed, and some times it fails, then once switch the off the Car and switch on again then is working ....so i don't understand what is the issue, although hydroliq in the pump is fully .....is there any idea should i solve this issue??
Hello Patrick, thanks for asking. The roof working intermittently is almost certainly an electrical issue. The easiest answer to give you is "watch the whole, and pay special attention to the section starting at 17:24", which covers how to read out all micro switch positions from the control module: ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html. It will take you a little time to identify which wire is which, but the video should be giving you all the information needed. At this point, all you need is a multimeter to check the signals on the wires highlighted in the video. If you have SDS (Star Diagnostic) on your computer, then you can read error codes and you can read out every micro switch state through your computer. Of course, any mechanic who has SDS can do this for you. I hope this helps!
The red button on my SLK 230 stays on when the car is on in park and flashes while I'm driving. The top is locked and up with the windows up. What could it be?
That would be either S69/2 or S69/3 in the front, or S69/7 or S69/8 in the rear. If you have closed the top manually, then the forward corners of the trunk lid are likely not fully latched.
Great video for a new by to the dreaded slk roof....when pressing my roof button the boot lid does all the movements and pump sounds in good order.....ie ...windows drop rear quarter lights drop boot lid goes back to accept roof but that’s where it all stops.....the pump keeps going but nothing moves . I’ve manually pushed the roof up but this stops the pump.....where do I go from here?......please please help
Hello Paul, the SLK roof is fairly simple - don't let it scare you! I believe you are saying that upon opening the roof, the trunk lid flips back and the pump keeps running. If you were to manually move the roof backwards, the pump will stop. The most likely cause is that the computer does not get the signal that the trunk lid has been retracted. That's why the pump keeps running to pull back the trunk lid some more without retracting the roof yet. It would also explain why the system shuts down when you move the roof backwards, as it would be illogical that the roof is partially retracted before the trunk lid is up. Check out the "Trunk lid open" switch S69/9. Make sure that it gets triggered and that it is still connected to the wiring harness. Here is the relevant section in the video: ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html Please let us know what you find...
Top Hydraulics I’m a bit ahead of you on this one.....I’ve just bought a replacement switch but it makes no difference......does this now mean a wiring problem.....which is what I’m dreading.....it started of intermittently but now is every time.....thanks for replying as it would be nice to have roof down while the suns shining...ha ha
@@paultopp7833 Have you checked S69/2 and S69/3 yet? If they have sticky boots, as mentioned in the video, then you will still get the "top locked at windshield" signal, which would prevent the top from retracting and which would cause the same shut-down once you manually retract the top. If S69/2 and S69/3 are okay, then you want to check the inputs into the control module as shown at the end of this video. It's not that hard once you get into it. Please let us now what you find.

Hi my SLK 230 starts to open boot and looks like it opened but then I hear pump going but roof top doesn’t move ? And if I let pressure out and then try to put it up same again roof but doesn’t move ? But pump working, what could be causing me my issue ?

@@TopHydraulics Thank you Klaus so much for your quick reply and advice. I will investigate today...Not surprised you have such a great reputation for service....Assume I can order switches from you if needed ? All the best from Australia.
@@user-lm4yp4cq4t We don’t sell switches and you likely won’t need one. The switches themselves rarely fail, it is usually a mechanical issue. For example, if you are trying to close the top manually, then the trunk lid cylinders will automatically pull the release cables on the forward latches and not allow the lid to latch all the way.
@@TopHydraulics Hi again..thank you for your reply. I am a little confused however. The roof is and remains perfectly. The only problem is the two rear quarter light windows do not close. I have watched all your very detailed videos. Would checking voltages in the module be the next step or do you have any other suggestions. Not sure if we lowered the roof now the two quarter lights may come down again but on closing probably not come up as this seems to be the only thing not working correctly. Hi Klaus - thank you for a super informative video explaining in details how the varioroof in a R170 works. I have been searching the internet and a variety of forums in the pursuit of a fix for the issue I have with my car. Almost every time I have been out for a ride with the top down, I experience problems with getting the roof on again. In this video ruclips.net/video/_bKftJcH4zg/видео.html you can see the trunk is open but I am unable to raise the roof. And at the same time, I can not close the trunk again. The only workaround is to try over and over again and have patience, as it finally raises the roof and close. I have had a mechanic delete the error codes for the switch S69/9 and S69/2+S69/3 I have not been able to get a readout of the error codes since they where deleted. Can you point me in the direction of where to look for a solution? Or even better tell me what to replace ;o) Thank you in advance. /Jacob
Hello Jacob, thanks for asking. Are you saying that the error codes did not come back , or that you did not have a chance to have codes read again? Also, does the pump always run when you push or pull the red button?
@@TopHydraulics I have not had a chance to get a second read out of the error codes. So I do not know which, if any, have come back. When I try to raise the roof the pump keeps running, and the button stays on. When I try to close the trunk, the red button flashes and the trunk stays open, the pump does not run.

This happened a few times before and after she reluctantly unlatched, the hydraulics worked fine, down ads back up. I suspect microswitches s69/2 and s69/3, if it cannot be resolved with lubrication. Top Notch video from Top Hydraulics. Thanks for presenting this in such a clear and concise way, very helpful.
You are very welcome, congrats and thanks for sharing!
Thank you! 🙂
Thanks for sharing! It is always helpful for car owners to read a success story, so that they get encouraged to tackle problems like this themselves.
Almost two years later the rebuilds sent are still working no leaks and not to mention all of the help ***** five stars for you guys
The quality of this video and information is amazing.
Double thumbs up 👍 . Thank you and the company for taking the time to help owners keep these amazing cars on the road. All the best ! VinceWheels

Hi Klaus, how many labour hours do you estimate to remove all 5 hydraulics and then reinstall the 5 hydraulics in your opinion. thanks
I know eventually I will have to send to cylinders to you once one fails on me.
Hello i have slk230 roof issue , Boot go back side window go down front latch roof unlocks but roof will not move at all , thank you
Hi there
Fantastic video and brilliantly worded.
Any of your thoughts would be appreciated
Best wishes
Daren
If you open the boot the regular way, then you can still move the trim far enough out of the way to fix the broken cable and/or unlatch manually first, or possibly even unscrew the striker (that goes into the latch) from the trunk lid.
Hi there
So impressed by the rapid response. Thank you very much.
I will attempt the striker technique. I think that’s a great idea.

Hello. My Cousin is owner of an r170. He has a very loud noise which is based on the Left Side of the trunk area. More exactly in the area of the Side. Sounds like a mechanical issue where either the latch is faulty (it would be easy to get a used one from a junkyard), or it needs to be lubricated to that it will latch fully, or you need to find a way to adjust the striker going into the latch such that it goes in a little deeper (probably just a millimeter).
My black "cone" or cylinder that depresses that switch at 6:31 broke. Do you know what the p/n is and do you sell those? How to change?
The black, plastic cone is part of the front lock assembly. You could either try to fix the broken part by drilling perpendicular, well centered holes into both broken ends, inserting steel dowels and gluing the parts back together, or simply replace the whole front lock assembly with a used one off eBay.
I believe they call them guide pins. No idea where I can buy one or how to change it though.

Here is more insight: See ruclips.net/video/9A2d4A3PyyE/видео.html
There may be a way to push in the switch from the inside without removing a lot of parts first.
One more question if u don't mind. Can u watch video 4Qq0tKoLYFw. He had to adjust the cables to allow the top to separate from the windshield. I have the same symptom and I thought it was just lubrications. Should I remove the headliner to make the adjustment?

@@TopHydraulics Thank you for your quick response. I will double check the trunk lid, I hope this is the problem. Will let you know!
@@TopHydraulics Today I checked it and the windows still do not want to close.
I have five questions for you:
1) You are writing that the top is TRYING to unlatch in the front after the trunk lid has been opened.
@@TopHydraulics
1) Yes once trunk lid has opened completely, the roof moves back about 1cm on the the left side and 0.5cm on the right side. To me it seems as if it has unlatched on the left side only
2 & 3) Yes once it gets stuck in said position, pushing the red button forward to close roof will do nothing. The pump will run if you continue to pull it (open the roof). Pushing it forward (to close roof) will only give you the flashing red light
4) No once the roof is stuck, I am unable to operate the lock and unlock with the Allen key tool. Very stiff but this is because it is not sitting in the correct position (the roof has inched back open slightly)
5) Not sure of what the pressure release valve is? I will need to do some more research and Nope I just stumbled on your channel today and will definitely be watching all your videos on this topic.
Hi, I have a problem that maybe you can help me with.
Sometimes when I open the hard top it doesn't close afterwards. I have to wait 45 minutes and then it closes. This does not always happen, only occasionally.
I don't understand, it seems that you have to do some reset and after 45 minutes it starts to work normally.
Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
Thanks.
Best Regards,

Hello Patrick,
thanks for asking.
@@TopHydraulics it turns out the roof latches weren't locked in properly. Thank you for the quick response. : )
@@rustynailsxxx1 Thanks for sharing! That means switches S69/2 and/or S69/3 were not giving the locked signal. They are actually wired in series.

I’ve manually pushed the roof up but this stops the pump.....where do I go from here?......please please help
Hello Paul,
the SLK roof is fairly simple - don't let it scare you!
Here is the relevant section in the video: ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html

Top Hydraulics ....I’ve bought myself a replacement switch but still the same.....2 switches but same outcome...
Top works fine but small windows will not go up
This video should give you the tools to find out why the rear windows don’t go . Hint: forward trunk latches. How far did you get with following the video and testing switches?
Hi my SLK 230 starts to open boot and looks like it opened but then I hear pump going but roof top doesn’t move ? And if I let pressure out and then try to put it up same again roof but doesn’t move ? But pump working, what could be causing me my issue ?
You could either check the micro switches shown in this video, or you could put some effort into describing the symptoms precisely.
@@TopHydraulics when I push the switch the windows and small quarter windows go down and the boot lid tilts back and then nothing else happens the roof doesn’t even move . If I let the hydraulic pressure off and fold it down manually and then tighen the hex screw then try to put the roof back up , nothing happens . The chap I bought it from said the roof used to work tempermentally .

@@TopHydraulicsok thankyou I will have a look at those , as rewatching video :)
@@TopHydraulicsThankyou for your advice it was the 2 microswitches on roof locking mechanism stuck . Cleaned them up and they work and system now works . Thankyou so much for your advice as most appreciated .
Do you know where I can get guide pin plastic bits from or metal ones maybe as 2 broken ones but luckily I had spare ones on a locking mechanism I had bought from scrap yard .
Hi, can you help me? My trunk is stuck. The central locking system does not open the trunk, the key does not lock the locks. Luggage cover is open. How i can open the trunk? Can i somehow lift a trunk with roof system?
Thanks for asking. I would identify the wires for the trunk partition at the controller and short them, so that your pump can flip the trunk lid backwards.
@@TopHydraulics So i need S69/10 Switch. Can i short them in N10-3 pin 54?
@@burningpipes529 Yes, that's what I would do. Short pin 54 to ground. Please let us know how it works out for you...

HELP.......Hi can any one please please tell me wich switch controls the real quarter light windows to come up when shutting the roof....Thank you so much ...
Hello Pat,
The rear quarter windows will not go up before the trunk lid (boot lid down under) has triggered switches S69/7 and S69/8 in the forward latches for the trunk lid, shown in this video starting at 10:23 ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html

The door windows operate as they should when closing the roof if down at the time of closing. We closed the two rear quarter light windows today after shutting the roof normally by disconnecting the two plugs from behind the seats using positive and negative from a battery not attached to the car. The roof operating cabin switch remains red when the car is running or ignition is on. Have not had to manually close the roof or pull on manual release straps. I have watched all your very detailed videos. Would checking voltages in the module be the next step or do you have any other suggestions. Not sure if we lowered the roof now the two quarter lights may come down again but on closing probably not come up as this seems to be the only thing not working correctly. Thank you so much for taking the time. Really appreciate it. Pat.

My Verizon roof is stuck cannot even open it manually. Just will not pivot any idea guys?
There are small latches in the frame, between the rear of the top panel and the top of the rear panel, which get activated by cables coming from the front latch. Adjust the cables or manually unlock them.
Yes..I have a 2001 slk320 the top works good up and down but the red light stays on and beeps every 5min when top is down and sometimes the small window don’t go up . Any ideas?
If the rear windows don't go up, then you want to check the "trunk lid down switches S69/8. See ruclips.net/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/видео.html
Top Hydraulics Thank you!!
Also any ideas on when top is down red light blinks and beeps?
Or even better tell me what to replace ;o)
Thank you in advance.
Have any components of the hydraulic system been worked on or replaced, lately?
@@TopHydraulicsHydraulics not to my knowledge - I have had the car for 1,5 year and I have not had anything done to it.
It's a microswich under the headliner, cut the boots off. I had this same problem..
Hello. A question. I have a leak in the cilínders of moving the trunk lifters. I get new pack for oberhaul the hidraulic pistons but I don’t know how pull off the pistons. Can you helpme send me a pictures or video show me how desassemble and assemble This pistons lifters. Thanks.
Sir Carl
Thanks for asking. The latches do not normally need lubrication. Just double checking: how far is the front unlatching, if at all? Would it turn if you helped it a little with a 6-mm Allen wrench?
I will try that! I’m a little unclear on which way you turn it...clockwise or counter to lower the roof?
@@1nekoosa Frankly, I don't recall. It will be obvious once you turn it. I recall clarifying it in our video on front lock cylinder removal: ruclips.net/video/NYTTJ_uMWwg/видео.html
@@TopHydraulics I watched the hex bolt above the dome light rotate when the top was trying to open, and it was rotating clockwise until it hung up. When the roof wouldn't come away from the windshield my wife and I banged on the roof at the approximate location of the rotating tumblers and the roof opened like magic!! I have been advised to move the pin assemblies outward a couple of mm, which solved the problem for another 2001 SLK320 owner. Also looking at lubrication options, and also considering replacing the S69/2 and S69/3 switches...thoughts?
@@1nekoosa The bellows on S69/2 or S69/3 not alowing he switch to relase by itself would explan the symptoms. How about taking the headliner off the top panel and checking them out?
