    There is no perceivable difference.. He had to tweak and gain stage differently for analog vs digital but it shows that his ears and the performance are the talent and the gear makes good tools in the hands of a good user. Thanks for this vid. Encourages me even more to get better w/ the craft.

    Having the UAD in the studio being able to use the hardware software is just pure quality and magic, the compatibility and the unison technology, the processing power is a dream come true in any studio. being able to record multiple instruments and vocals , plus the option for 5.1 and multiple speaker monitor setup is just a dream

    Well done guys! I love the fact that you took the extra effort to do a real side-by-side comparison. The difference to my ear was in the lows and low mids, but negligible in my opinion. The more I hear the UA gear the more I am inspired to jump in. Thank you for the incredible work! Very informative and entertaining.

    There is a difference on those drums. That snare pops a little bit different with the analog gear. Both sound good but if I could afford it, I would be using the analog version. On all this material the Analog gear just sounds more 3D. (My monitoring chain is Ear, Barefoot 01, Apollo x8, Trinnov ST2 pro, Dangerous D Box +.) I think UAD is one of the best companies doing it, but they are not the only ones especially for plug ins. Check out Analog Obsession and I like Kush Audio. I own every major DAW and a ton of plug ins, once Luna gets integrated video I'll switch switch from AVID. Great video VK, I like that you make these comparisons. It will only push things further.

      The Neve 8014 alone costs about $150,000!!! When you add the other preamps, EQ modules, compressors, and so on, that'll cost a fortune! In today's music production landscape, it's no longer justifiable! You can take a fraction of that cost and get a handful of analog gears to run your stems through or your 2-bus. If LUNA comes close, imagine running LUNA through an analog mastering chain that'll cost a fraction of what it costs to put this studio together!

    • @RIP_Milhouse
      @RIP_Milhouse 3 года назад

      LUNA and the analoge extension can get you to a "finished record" in very little time and with not much other processing required.
      I've gone from a ton of plugins per channel and 2bus in other programs to literally the Analogue extensions and not much else than an SSL channel strip.

    I don't know! Maybe it's just my personal opinion. But I love the sound of real hardware in here. It sounded more glued together and I could make out some subtle difference in especially lows and mids.
    Listen to the kick and snare. For me, it sounds better recorded with real hardware.

    great vid, thanks vintage king, felt the uad stereo image was a bit collapsed(mono) compared to the more spacious sound on the hardware gear esp on drums, but yet retained same punchiness and sonic quality, Uad had less hiss and a cleaner sound than hardware. Still an unbelievable value compared to the fortune that all that gear cost to purchase and maintain, no brainer.

    I own an x4 that I’m running ADAT in and out to a Scarlett 18i20 which I use only for the ad da conversion with some CAPI and I dwarf connection 500 series preamps, and a WA273eq. I’ve been wanting to upgrade my 18i20 to an x8p to run those unison preamps when recording drums to give them a more vintage sound, but also get them tight for metal and modern rock. The x4 is amazing but having those 8 more inputs would be a game changer. Eventually I will get the x16 as well to expand even more my IO...possibly with a satellite too to run all the plug ins...it’s a never ending expanding adventure that I love and enjoy very much!!!! And Luna interaction with that interface is just amazing! I love it!!!🖤🔥

    I would add this to my existing Apollo X8P which I have already purchased to be able to track a full band without compromise. I have just recently added another Octo-Satellite to my system for a total of 24 cores. The extra horsepower of adding another X8P would help to run even more effects on my Mixbus without worry. Thanks for an awesome system that blows ProTools out of the water without bowing to the greedy inferior so called industry standard creations!

    The snare is SOO different between the 2 setups, the UAD is not bad at all, but that's what I feel a lot of the "nevey clones" get wrong about them. Yes they have a dark, slow gloomy vibe with tons of low mids, but the hi end is not tamed like you feel here.

    Razor close! It was on the drums I could hear a difference, and the Neve wins out. Just “slightly” more muted or muffled through the UA signal. More punch, more alive through the Neve. But for what you get in exchange of connivence in terms of size, space (and cost,) makes it hard (very hard,) to overlook UA.

  • @divine_architek
    @divine_architek 3 года назад

    No matter what I hear the analog stuff sounding better however when we factor in cost all of sudden it makes more sense to me what to pick. Drop around $4000 for the UA x8p and the plugins to get a sound that is 90% of the way there with all of the gear used in the video versus the astronomical cost of the gear in the video. $4000 gets you just 1 LA-2A. I mean if you have the budget for that extra 10% to make yourself sound better then by all means get it especially if it means a better sound for you and your clientele. But for $4k to get 90% of the way there is really great!

    You can totally hear how the analog gear masks the resonant frequencies on the drums especially in the kick you can hear that "note" and the boxyness less on the hardware compared to the unison. What i usually do is have a Neve channel strip on the inserts as well to double up the color and that usually does the trick! I still love Unison so much!!

  • @eventhorizon1414
    @eventhorizon1414 3 года назад

    I'll record the drums with Unison.Better results can be heard than medium-grade hardware pre or console. It is also easy to modify after recording and allows multiple tracks to use the compressor or EQ at the same time. In addition, the drummer himself can record in booth for a long time.

  • @experiment0003
    @experiment0003 3 года назад +2

    The truth is you know it's an A/B test, so psychologically, your mind is looking for a difference. If you didn't know and you heard this song on the radio, you wouldn't be like... "wow, that was recorded all-analog." I have a studio with tons and tons of analog gear, but I know that in the analog/digital war, digital won! Of course, we still have analog purists, but they are are a dying breed. A 100 years from now, it'll not even be a discussion. Digital won. Digital is here to stay. Digital will only get better and better, while analog is stuck somewhere in the 60s.

  • @beatsmith
    @beatsmith 3 года назад +1

    Very close sonically. There is a "tell" tho... its the resonance in the audio. The UAD hardware isn't inherently taming the resonances of the instruments, vocals or drums as much as the outboard is. If I had to guess, its because certain characteristics of output/input transformers just can't be modeled in a digital environment. I did a similar test utilizing my uad setup vs my outboard gear (neve pres and tab v76 pres) and had similar results. Ended up building a transformer box as a result. Lol. Still, great gear and software from UAD.

    In the comparison of the drums it is evident the quality that the hardware of the console gives in the treble, in general, it tends to give more greatness in the sound in the bass, it is difficult to notice something different, the other gives a better feeling in the stereo. at least that persivo in general there is no hardware but uad does not do it bad at all you have to think that a neve 8014 if you are lucky you will get it at about 100,000 dollars up and second hand vs 3 thousand and so many dollars that it is worth an apollo x8p and to that you add 3 thousand more to buy the bundle and you have almost all the plugin in your possession really a bargain

    To me they both sound as good.., not the same, the tone is not the same the depth is not the same, but they are not equally as good of a result. You can make a record that is perfectly reminiscent of the full analog classic gear with the UAD equipment. The only way to make UAD better, is to catch up with plug-in alliance and bring something like TMT to their platform.

    I'm sorry but the UAD just sounds so hazy and smeared compared to the original gear. Funny that the first time I heard 'analog is over, digital is sounding nearly as good, check out the UAD Apollo' is now like a decade ago - and it still sounds 'nearly' as good in a slightly different but functionally similar way. Nearly, always nearly - ever the blushing bridesmaid. With the amount I've spent on UAD gear over the years I could have bought a fucking 1073 and an LA2A for real. Always left slightly dissatisfied. Condom vs bareback. No comparison.

      But that’s one channel, how would you record an entire band performance? Or you just track your vocal alone ? I think a hybrid setup is best of all. Some stuff just sounds better to tape in my ear and some play back better straight to digi, That’s my experience. There’s no one right way with music production, I hear friends stuff that was terribly recorded with budget gear and wonder how the hell did you get that sound ? I have it all real analog outboard and tape machines etc. I use them all interchangeably to get a result so don’t get hung up on one verses the other. If you know how to get there you can nail the sound with either one
