RESIN/PLASTIC FRAMES TRANSFORMED INTO FRENCH ANTIQUE MIRRORS (AN AUTHENTIC LOOK WITHOUT REAL WOOD)

  • Do you love 18th-19th century European antiques seen in Veranda & House Beautiful? I have re-finished countless pieces with Old World inspired designs but my passion is helping other finish artists gain that little bit of confidence to get them excited to execute these unique & desirable pieces. The biggest problem & question I see is "how can I get that rich wood peaking through under layers of gesso & chipping milk paint without stripping or starting with real wood to begin with"??
If milk paint could adhere naturally to plastic, resins, or woods with varnish coats this would not be a problem. But because milk paint's binder is natural & casein based, VS synthetic binders like today's paint, you have to start with raw wood or similar absorbent substrates. Follow me in this video as I show you how to create that perfect base for milk paint to naturally adhere but also make it look like real wood! By using specific colors and water based stains we are able to easily create that faux wood layer that becomes the necessary pillar to build up that incredible centuries old finish seen on Gustavian & Provincial Antiques.

Thank you for this brilliant video. I've bought an old frame from a second hand shop and I was looking for ideas on how to make it look gorgeous, and now I know! I'm so glad I found your channel. Thanks again. Love from Amanda Jones in Melbourne, Australia ❤

Very good job. Looks authentic to me. I love painting, old world pastures with sheep, and these style of frames would look perfect with my paintings. Thank you for sharing.

These are gorgeous, exquisite frames (by the end!). I did find it hard to watch and read at the same time, given the fast pace of the subtitles. I wish you'd do a voice over (and not use music, which is distracting), so my eyes could focus more on what and how you're applying the layers. Aside from this, you offer such great details re antiquing - and they turned out beautifully. Thanks so much!

you know your different media's very well. obviously you understand the 2 techniques and their capabilities. the results are gorgeous! I love both results, but the 1st one a little more
It would have been easier to follow if you completed one frame, and then the other. it was kind of confusing to follow what was going on when you jumped back and forth. I really want to learn these techniques!!
Could I use these techniques on furniture?
Would these techniques work on already painted furniture, or is sanding necessary?
What was your final cost for cleaner, paints, stain, and wax?
Thank you for this lesson. do you have any on faux gold guilding? My decor is French Versailles style.

I just found you.😊Gorgeous! They look so authentic. I did learn a lot. Thank-you for sharing. And btw...I love the music! Especially the 1st tune. I enjoyed watching & learning the process while listening to the music. Sometimes there's too much talking. Awesome video!

That was exactly what I needed to see. Question please..If I painted the mirror with OS windsor brown, because I thought that was the color for the wood look. Can I just paint the lighter color OS on top and start there? Then the gel stain over that? Your tutorials are so helpful.

Hi new to your channel loved your work but felt it was hard to follow would have preferred a verbal tutorial.

Love your work and end results very beautiful!! Nice speed for overview but too fast to capture techniques, product showings such as paint & brush choices. Be helpful if they were identified in print both during video and well laid out list of products at end. I couldn’t see when you quickly showed products. Would like it easy to write down so I can purchase. Thank you!!
