  • Today we'll be analysing Daniel Mullins latest game Inscryption. A game which introduces a unique artstyle and interesting gameplay mechanics, whilst also being steeped in the same amount of meta mysteriousness as his previous games.

I feel like there is a giant contrast to when Leshy is the Scrybe than Po3 when it comes to interaction to the player.
Leshy seems to take away most of the "Annoying mechanics of the other scrybes except he and Grimora" due that Po3's is quite easy and unpunishing and Magnificus is convoluted and extremely punishing. Making the game be in the middle point of hard and challenging but not unfair and punishing. Out of all the 4 scrybes, he seems the most interested in dramatic moments and being immersed in the experience, making it look like he's a tyrant ruler that serves well as the final boss of the game at first hindsight of the player, neither he tries to make it easy for the player, thou however tries to shut down the player by cheating if he felt he's going too fast he didn't have time to introduce fun aspects of the game because he doesn't want to overload the player with too much information. As much as Leshy threatens the player, he does not wish to harm or imprison his challengers letting them to freely roam the room, touch all the items and freely allow any exploit the player might come with just the cards and the rules he created by ultimately seeing as something worth of praising due to their understanding of the game's mechanics, it's just an act to keep the player immersed and engaged (with the only exception is when the player steals the film because that is a seriously life or death situation for him). Finally the memento, adding weight to his play pretending he kills the player to potray him even more evil than he is, when in reality Leshy is more than self aware that the player/luke is never in real danger for losing the match and will just start over the game again, This is even further seen by the fact that besides the "mementos" of each challenger he also includes people he considered interesting and even mentioned other videogame characters as previous challengers because he didn't really meet a lot of actual people so he had to make some up just from other of the GameFuna's characters that might just appeared as guests on Inscryption. In the end, all Leshy wanted was to make a very immersive and engaging experience and keep the player in until it gets bored or finishes the game.
Po3 on the other hand is very much opposite than Leshy. First off he is not interested in the player as a person but rather a tool to achieve his GREAT TRASCENDENCE, he stages the event, make it as easy as possible and unpunishing to learn and persist, as if Po3 only wishes for the player to win as fast as possible, he makes sure that instead of slowing the player down like Leshy to get interested in the travels reminds him constantly of the end and make the pathway to the uberbot as direct as possible by making the game lineal and to freely allow the player to even create the most OP cards ever and not try anything to stop it if it helps make winning for him even easier. His guise and acting is not meant to entertain the player, but to deceive him, forcing their ignorance to make them do things that he can't do on his own, like accessing the hard drive, make screenshots, design the game and it's cards, and hook him up online. Finally he has no regard for the player other than a guillible fool he needs to manipulate to get what he wants, he is also a total tyrant unlike Leshy, first off by initially cuffing the player forcing them to play his game until it's beaten until proven that he needs to let the player out, and restricting him off the access to the other rooms he can't reach at first unless necessary, unlike Leshy's unapologetically acted play, you seriously need to perform the actions outside his eyes to plot your escape completely by the dishonest lie that he means not to harm you and in fact might share his spoils with you if you cooperate. In conclusion, he plays you like a puppet to get what he wants and dispose of you as soon as you outlive your purpose.
In the end it feels like Leshy is humblest of all the 4 scrybes, accepting his fate as only being a videogame character, with the other 3 being very discontent with that resolution, Po3 wants to ascends to something greater, Grimora wants everything to die as it's freedom and Magnificus prefers the solace of just being left be as the hermit he is and he has no interest in entertaining anyone as a videogame character. It was a great idea that Leshy is the first scrybe you have to deal with, with Po3 being the 2nd best option, pretty sure Grimora and Magnificus would not have what it takes to entertain the player and quickly shut it down as they both lack intention and are very deviated from player's expectations on how to actually make a videogame work. This finally explains why Leshy felt compelled to be the Game Master of Inscryption as he felt like the only one more fit for this purpose, he still let the other scrybes live as talking cards in order to make part of the fun he never saw it as punishment but rather as a gift rather than what Po3 did (Leave them in the dark).

      Fantastically written and excellent points

    • @gekks5250
      @gekks5250 2 года назад +24

Gotta say this is well written, tho I feel like Leshy isn't quite as humble as you think. Leshy is certainly the most relatable and genuine of the scrybes, and he is definitely my favorite of the four, but I always felt like he was mostly entertaining the player just to slate his thirst for "The Game". It is ofc possible that the "evil old man" personality was an act for the sake of the player- and I personally believe that to partially true- moments like when you lose a life or kill a card by repeatedly resting it by the fire, his unsympathetic disappointment shows his true nature- unashamedly selfish. He is genuinely frustrated that the player isn't living up to his standards and therefore making the game less fun for him. All the scrybes know is The Game, and Leshy seems to be the most consumed by it. P03, Grimora, and Magnificus all view Inscryption as a prison (to varying degrees), but to Leshy it is home. And while that makes him the most "human" of the four, it also makes him the most intense. The player is a means to an end for Leshy (much like P03), that end being the longevity of his satisfaction. This is why he gets so angry when the player is going through the game too fast- if it's not at Leshy's preferred pace, it's not at any pace at all. This isn't to say he doesn't care for the player- "after all, if I can enjoy it, so can the player- but to Leshy, his needs and wants come first. (This is why his redemption arc hits so hard- when P03 comes to ridicule him after defeat in act 2, he realized that his actions were having heavier consequences then he first thought, and is possibly why he seems so at peace with deletion by the end)
I'd say all the scribes are consumed by their own selfishness. P03 wants power. Grimora wants to be free from her own suffering. Magnificus just wants to stay alive. But Leshy seems to have the most innocent desire of the bunch, which is one of the reasons why he's my favorite. Deciding on which one is the most humble is difficult, but at the end of the day I think it's gotta be The Angler.
      Good Fish 👍

I would like to say, that Act 1 is actually not unbalanced against you, if anything it's in your favor. Things like the Ouroboros can be exploited to do literally hundreds of damage, or getting a flying card with Trifurcation. And in regards to the final battle, one can see what the figure is planning because it shows him with the masks. You can see he's holding that pickaxe and infer "okay, he's using the mechanic from that fight, let's not play all our strongest cards and maybe even sacrifice to get less gold on our end." And when the death cards arrive, they were built to be overpowered, him turning them against you should be difficult to deal with without proper strategy. If you have more free space, you could have won first turn.
Also the moon fight is literally zero effort just Touch Of Death or stink it up-
And for Act 2s mechanics, they aren't explained because they weren't your "choice." In the context of the actual game, like not the self aware part, you are "meant" to use the decks from the Scrybe you chose. You understand Beast Cards and Bone Cards because they were explained in Act 1, but in actual game terms, you started a new game and don't understand any of this. If you chose P03 it would tell you how to use Energy, and if you chose Magnificus he'd tell you how to use Mox.
I really hope I don't come off as rude, I love your review, I simply dig deep into this and wish to point out things you missed!

Funny enough I assumed the death cards were stealing your best cards and deleting them from your deck, so I made my death cards pretty awful. Which ended up helping.
After a bit I looked up what they were and saw they were a benefit. So the next two death cards I made OP. On the run right after I got both in my deck and faced the final Leshy boss. And when he played my death cards against me they were all garbage except the two I was using and I beat the final phase quickly.

However, there's apparently a free dlc expansion that's been released by the developer, called kaycees mod. It's in beta currently, but it contains additional information in the form of dev logs from the developer kaycee. According to it, the reason the game is set to leshie, is because she was the one playing it before it wound up with Luke.
Additionally, the thing that WE are playing, appears to be an amalgamation of all data on Luke's computer, po3 could put together in order to recreate the game and upload it to steam. 1 hour and 25 minutes....does this video explain the lore or does it go into detail over every gameplay aspect....if so is there a lore specific video somewhere?

You really don't have to narrate the cutscenes. The audio in them is clear enough to understand.

getting the elk totem with the sigil of undying, in combination with the black sheep, long elk, and Daus is one of the best setups ive ever had. still lost the game though…

I doubt you're an idiot, but i genuinely appreciate how you review card games

Ooof, watching you play did make me squirm a little. Though I guess it all makes sense if you haven't played any card games before.
Stuff like touch of death is actually practically useless. 9 times out of 10 having a card with a lot of attack is just way better as that will often one hit kill most creatures anyways while also getting damage on the figure. The most overpowered strategy you can do is just having 1 or 2 cards who can instantly kill the figure on the first turn. Having a large deck is actually a downside and you want to actively avoid picking up new cards as much as possible.

Kinda hard to watch when the tone is consistently just "yelling" the whole time.

Guys for god sick I am freaking going crazy, does Lucky carder actually dies, ofc I'm not naive or idiot, and I know it's just a game but wt actually f this vid in the game all about, like who the f made a story line like this and it's not even finished, although why they didn't put like "all the thing you've just seeing was acting" or something like that

Yes, in terms of the Game and its ARG, Luke is dead. The Lady Employee who was stalking him shoots him at the end before he can leak the game's secrets to the public.

Well I'm 20,tbh I expect everything,my mind is corrupted from the war that I experiences in Syria,so yeah a scene like that I can totally believe it's actually true, but in the other hands if it's actually true they would get in allot of trouble for it,or maybe they are just sending a message.
