    -- BREAK --
Lockheed Martin has released new details about the air-launched hypersonic Mako missile, which promises to be the first hypersonic weapon in the world that can be launched from the internal weapons bay of not just the F-35, but the F-22 Raptor as well.
This new missile has been under development for seven years and has been touted by Lockheed officials as a “multi-mission” weapon system capable of maritime strike, counter-air defense, and a variety of other surface-attack operations. It was originally developed for the U.S. Air Force, but now may find a home with the U.S. Navy instead.
Let's talk about what we've learned about this groundbreaking new weapon.

@@John-mf6ky Yes, that's valid for streamlined supply. The problem is that the Navy needs a really strong framework, landing gear ect. That makes it heavy or, a weight penalty that the Airforce really doesn't need. So they could haul more fuel to extend the range. Just have to keep in our minds that more fuel equals more weight. Then if we could carry two times the fuel doesn't mean it will double the range. It doesn't take long to get bogged down with these issues. The F-35 that the Navy uses has a bigger wing. Hard to see it, but they are larger for slow flight to land on the carrier. The one the Marines use can land verticaley. I looks about the same but it's so different. All three versions look alike. They have the same F-35 family name but, A is Airforce. B is for Marines and C is the Navy version. It's a mess. While the names and several components are the same, they're all different. Sorry for the lengthy text.

US research into hypersonic missiles is so much more well established than anyone else. It's not yielded any platforms until now because they weren't fundamentally needed. While unproven that there is a distinct advantage to them vs non-hypersonics, logic says that there likely is, at least in some circumstances. This is supported by the choice of closing speed profile for the Mako. If it can be widely used and priced competitively with existing other weapons systems, then that's definitely a winner.

Embedded systems do not need a lot of compute.
The primary compute demands of the f-35 don't have much to do with the actual flying of the aircraft.
The most interesting question in my mind for a few years now has been about modernization...
The air force made a big deal when they unveiled the b-21 that it was the first "6th generation aircraft" in part because of how the expected benefits of digitized engineering have finally come to fruition after decades of efforts, which supposedly made it vastly easier and faster to go from scratch to flying prototype.
Now, if they have made advances that are as big as they say they have, they could do some really neat things that would get you laughed at 10 years ago. Neat, like "port all of the f-35 avionics to the f-22" neat. Now that we're at the point of technical development where we are running entire aegis instances in virtualized containers, crazy things like "run the unmodified Ada code for the f-22 FCS in a virtual machine on a different hardware platform"
