This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Toyota GR Corolla hot hatchback! This powerful hot hatch is an absolute blast to drive. It has a 1.6L turbo 3-cylinder with 300 horsepower, 273 lb-ft of torque and GR-Four AWD. The Toyota GR Corolla is designed to perform with the focus on lightweight aerodynamics to maximize the performance potential. It has a sport tuned suspension and is offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission with automatic rev matching to facilitate smooth shifts. Developed for rally, the GR-Four AWD system is adjustable to send 40%, 50% or 70% of the power to the rear wheels. It is also equipped with front and rear limited-slip differentials for enhanced cornering performance and better traction when taking those corners. There is just one trim available in Canada, three in the US but the extra trims in the US won’t last long. The Circuit Edition will only be available for 2023 and the GR Corolla MORIZO is a limited-edition model. This hatchback offers 5.3” of ground clearance, it has a black GR badged Matrix grille, a tapered roof giving it a sporty look and its wide low stance has quite the presence on the road. It comes standard with LED headlamps, 18” black wheels, a tire repair kit and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The race-inspired interior has manual cloth sport seats, an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a 12.3” multi-information display. In the US, the Circuit Edition adds suede upholstery and an 8-speaker JBL audio system.
For fuel economy, the GR Corolla gets 11.1L/100 km, 21 MPG city and 8.3L/100 km, 28 MPG highway.
In Canada, all pricing now includes, freight and delivery, dealer fees and levies, minus taxes. The Core model starts at $48,599.70 CAD
In the US, it’s still MSRP, Core $35,900 USD, Circuit Edition $42,900 USD, Morizo Edition $49,900 USD.

For Toyota fans the GR Corolla is an outstanding limited production car that is 100% Toyota. It is the high-performance Corolla we really WANT🤩Too bad Toyota's loyal and practical Canadian customers can't get the mainstream, 3.7 litre per 100 km Corolla Hybrid Wagon that we really NEED. 🤨
I’d be down for a corolla hybrid wagon in the US
No one likes wagons in Canada and I hate them kol
I currently Drive a TDI Volkswagen SportWagen and it's a great car very practical, and extremely economical.
@@jdmbren13incorrect.
We, we, we. Who's we? It's just you.
Between Toyota purposely limiting production and dealerships marking up these things to the Moon, I can't help but notice that the hype and fanfare has fallen off a cliff. People are starting to see this car as something unobtainable, like a Ferrari or Lamborghini. It's only for the rich and well connected.
So $50000 is expensive in your country, here in Australia this car is $65000
@@djizzah 50k is expensive in any country

It's a one off rally bred limited production hot hatch, with a trick all wheel drivetrain,
what did you expect it would cost $30,000?
The MSRP pricing is fair for this car, it's when dealerships add on ridiculous adm's that the price gets silly.
I'm fortunate that my dealer in Canada 🇨🇦 is selling me the car at MSRP and not a penny more.
The funny thing is we don't have pennies here anymore 😉.
However they are charging me $399.00 for a document fee, which to me is a scam and rip off, but far better than a
$2,000-$15,000 adm that you gents in the good old USA get charged.
@@dougmaverick3287 The only new rally bred car we have from Toyota is the Yaris GR-Four, it's the The only one that was designed and engineer from the ground up to be a rally car, not the Corolla GR. What I was talking about as it relates to pricing was the ridiculous markups dealerships are putting onto the cars not the original MSRP, The original price for the car is very reasonable for the amount of vehicle you're getting.
I live in the Boston area and I've been calling Toyota dealers to try and get a test drive of a GR Corolla. So far with no luck at all. I was also told by a salesman that they expect to charge more than $10k over MSRP for this car.
For those who STILL think it's illegal to mark up cars in Canada, Canadian dealers are trying to sell the base model CORE for $70,000.
70 grand, FOR A COROLLA.
We just picked up our circuit edition yesterday, ON 🇨🇦 😃…so far my wife and I love it…but my 3.5 year old might love it more than us. That’s a good thing because I think we will be keeping it and passing it on to him to drive.
I regret selling my ‘91 MR2 Turbo back in 2003 so I’m not making that type of mistake again!
What a car it is. There aren't any new cars that interested me except for a couple of sports compacts. GR Corolla is one of them. The same goes for GR 86 and GR Corolla's main rival, Civic Type-R and Elantra N.
when you see the coffee all over the top of the lid, she must have had fun with the car.
Zack, my Toyota dealer let me know my GR Corolla will be arriving the first week in April.
My concern is the ride quality.
I recently sold my Veloster N which had a fairy stiff ride, but not punishing.
My Focus RS ride was unbearably stiff and punishing, so I sold it after only 8 months of ownership.
How does the ride quality of the GR Corolla compare to cars like the Veloster N, Golf R and Ford Focus RS?
Even though Toyota quality is best in the business I wonder what’s the reliability and longevity of a 3-cylinder small displacement turbo engine, especially when these cars are probably going to be abused.
I predict the abused ones won't last .
Like a BOSS 💪
Hi Team Motormouth, The GR Corolla reminds me of the guy who finished second to Usain Bolt when he smashed the world record. The GR Corolla is world class but the champion and real deal is the GR Yaris. 👏👏👏👏
For over $50,000 I'd buy a used Porsche Macan!!! That little thing with no luxury isn't worth the cost! Who's got 50 grand to put out on manual transmission that looks like a cheaper car??? Great video guys!!! I love seeing the spark in Andrea's eyes hitting the gas pedal!!🤣🤣🤣
How to ride the clutch 101
Cool little car, but for that amount of money I would be more inclined to spend few more bucks and get a Supra…just my $.02
Only if I can get one...
I’m a big fan of the ‘Hot Hatchback’. This Toyota is supercool. This is definitely a collectible rocket. It appears to be very practical, very fast and very fun. But personally… I’d take the Germanic Golf R every time. Thanks for the video.
(the engine cover is bigger than that ‘3 banger’).
I dontknow about practical. Rear legroom and trunk are nearly useless.
@@janoycresnova9156 Yeah these cars are very tiny. I'm sure it's a blast to drive though!
@Kellington Link I like the Golf R more. But the biggest cost of owning a vehicle is depreciation. At the end of the day, the GRC will end up being significantly cheaper. So me being as frugal as I am, I'd go with the GRC.
The biggest cost of a vehicle is…. your dignity. The Golf R doesn’t shout … “LOOK AT ME!” And although many Japanese cars are brilliant, I’m a fan of many… but I prefer European feel, style and engineering. Most of my vehicles have been German.
Thing looks like a Scion XD. but not. The new Prius are 30k. The 50k version of this is so not worth it.
And manual transmissions used to be cheaper. This car, though nifty, makes little sense. So not enthused.
Bring back the Spyder!
Lets hope its not like the LFA where it was only for couple years
The LFA was a limited production of 500 units globally. It was not meant to be a mass production car. At all.

"At a glance, you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between a regular Volkswagen Golf, the GTI, and the Golf R. However, you’d have no trouble once you got the behind the wheel. The Golf R is the performance king of the three, offering 292 horsepower along with all-wheel drive and the ability to hit 60 in less than 5.0 seconds.
On the used market, it commands a high price. Depreciation barely topped 43% after five years in an owner’s hands. That would get most Golf R buyers close to $30,000 back when it came time to sell." - MotorBiscuit (November 11, 2018)
SO GAY REVIEW
Nothing better than Andrea’s smile when stomping on gas pedal. 😃
You're (over)paying for the engine and AWD system, but every time you interact with the interior or just look around you're reminded this is a $20k econobox interior.
I wish Toyota put all this carbon-fibre from the roof into the interior, to elevate the driving experience.
Point is the GR is a more hardcore performance car than the R, stiffer chassis and suspension, better brake pedal feel and brake performance, more steering feedback and that crisp shifter feel just brings all the other senses of feedback all together. Golf R, a better daily commuter though.
Knowing the performance is equivalent to the Golf R. I would take the Toyota because it would have a better resale value and reliability. Yes I know it's a 3-cylinder turbo and it might be high-strung flooring it all the time but once again it is a Toyota and they know how to build reliable engines. And yes I love barebone rather than all these quirky electronics in a German car.
Overall great review
I would love to buy this car, so much fun 🤩!!! I hope Toyota can sustain building this car for a few more years!
No carbon buildup issues for Toyota, as It has port fuel injection - not just direct injection. It will clean the intake valves...the GTI, WRX, and others are only Direct injection soo long term expect: power loss, expensive intake cleaning,
Who cares, you can’t get one
Damn, $60,000 for a GR Corolla Circuit edition in Canada. That car is only $44000 in America. Man I’m proud to be an American 😂😂.
All joking aside, I did try to put a deposit down on a Circuit edition, but these cars are basically un-obtainium. I wouldn’t fault anyone for getting the Golf R over this, but like Zach said, if you buy the GR Corolla you essentially get to drive the car for free because should you ever choose to sell it, you WILL be getting ALL your money back.
People always give Toyota a pass when their vehicles are below par. But the WRX got plastic cladding, and the internet roasted it to no end. You can keep this unfinished, overpriced, hype machine.
The two of you get more entertaining every time. And great info. Kudos to my neighbors to the North.
I've been especially waiting for this review Andrea, what a car in every way. Looks, spec, performance. All adds up to a winner hands down. Oh and don't frighten Zack too much with its speed. Be interesting to see if you think it's affordable too!
Pure fun! The GR Corolla has such an engaging drive but would still be a great daily driver. Always love driving a manual!
@Andrea Spencer Definitely agree Andrea, you certainly looked like you were enjoying driving this car with the manual transmission. A daily drive most definitely, but as Zack said if you can buy now do it for the future 2nd hand clamour as a sought after collectors item!
I just checked it out at the Toronto Autoshow. As much as i like the styling from the outside, the inside just looks and feels cheap cheap basic. Someone paid 60k for this in my local dealership, and I think it is not worth the money.

I got a call from my dealer 2 days ago, said my supersonic red GRC will be arriving first week in April.
The salesman said I will be getting their first gr Corolla.
I was told way back in April of 2022 that I was third on the list so I guess the first two gentlemen on the list opted to wait for the circuit Edition.
To me the circuit Edition is not worth $9,000 when the core and the circuit Edition have the same exact performance.
I'm paying MSRP $48,000 including freight, pdi, document fees plus sales tax.
I would never pay a single penny in dealer markups.
I read some clown 🤡 in the states paid $13,000 adm.

Looks like SO much fun, but I just can't get used to the prices of new cars...$50k?! Nearly $60k for that other package? Geez, remember when the manual version was cheaper? lol
Guys can you give us cargo space in litres ? It's much more tangible to me, i.e. I can see that many 1 litre bottles and it's a bit more exact. Nice review, my vote is still with the Golf R especially at that price. The R feels amazing, even with stupid haptic feedback systems - quite right that it's an Audi with the VW badge on it, and my choice every time. I don't buy the 'Future collectible' argument, just get a 1980s Porsche if you really want that.
I can confirm that I have the same Android auto issue on my 2022 Lexus Nx350h.
Dealer in Everett, WA has one white base model on sale for $57K... total joke
Great review! I want to love this more and I'm a huge fan of hot hatches especially the GTI... but there's simply no way I'd ever spend $50k on a Corolla in any configuration.
What about 40k for the same specs in this video? I just got offered one and I’m wondering if I should buy it.
@@sbs-0055 Much more reasonable, except a Golf R is available at that price and will feel amazing at that price. Toyota has to up the interior at the very least, I'm loving that three cylinder at 300 hp as a concept at the moment.

Thank you! most other reviewers are only comparing this car to the Type R
I wanted so much to wait for this GR Corolla, I really did(I still think they should have called it, a GR Celica alltrac Turbo).. But, at my age(In my 50s), I'll still keep our 2020 STI(For the manual itch), and our Audi B9 S4 for creature comforts and a bit of speed. Thanks Zach and Andrea for another awesome review.
The dealers near my hometown are asking for $45,000 before the tax. Dealer markups are crazy and driving customers away
Great cars if your road's pavement is smooth. Unfortunately, the sad truth is that between snow, rain pooling, and potholed roadways it's hard to enjoy these vehicles without constantly scraping the bottom. Toyota GR Corolla's ground clearance is 5.3 inches, VW Golf R is 4.7.
Great in a perfect setting, but not so much in the real world! 🤔
True. And VW makes it worse by going with stupid 35mm sidewall tires.
@@edwardzdankiewicz9068 VW's specs for the Type R: Summer performance tires, 235/35 R19, 91Y... 35 is the Aspect Ratio which equates to a sidewall dimension of 82.25 mm. both the subaru and hyundai are much better values for your money.
plus, there is the kona n with more room and lower costs, and hyundai has better warranty also. 🤑👍💰
Almost $60k for a three cylinder heavily boosted engine above 25 psi and you guys are praising it as though it will be some sort of collector car...this was Toyota's chance to build a high-revving NA 4-cylinder engine and they missed it. At least it sounds decent.
Correction CIRCUIT EDITION is 😂not 49,000 plus Tax the MORIZO is 49,990 Plus On Roads please don’t BS
I would buy one for 35k. Not 49 tho
The US pricing for the base model is great!
Zach and Andrea, motors with such small displacement but achieving 300 HP must mean longevity of the motor might be an issue. No?
I'd trust Toyota over say, Ford, VW, Subaru
The base BMW B48 Supra is so much more car. A quick JB+ / JB4 piggy/tune and you'll never remember deciding between the two. The GR Corolla should be a $38K CDN car where its performance envelope makes sense.
Import the GR Yaris...

Enjoy your channel all the way from Australia. RHD here, so enjoy the MightyCarMods content on the GR Yaris.
Besides the very bad interior of the MK8 Golf R, the R is faster, has a bigger engine, gets better mpg’s, is more practical, doesn’t feel like you’re stepping inside a base model $20k car, and lastly, is a lot cheaper. Golf R ftw
Toyota said they're increasing production for 2024. I think they will make this car for at least 5 years. Otherwise they would be merely breaking even on their investment.
Who on earth would spend $60,000 to say you drive a Corolla. You can get a Supra for that!
Wow...what a car! Amazing review Andrea and Zack!
Thank you so much, glad you liked it!
I clicked so fast when I saw that Andrea would be driving stick again!!
Good looking car, sounds like a fun car, it’s tempting!
Pure fun!!!
the wait time for a Golf R is two years and the Gr if you didnt order one forget about it so neither of them
So Andrea is driving stick now? Good for you girl, keep it up.
We're all being duped by all the car companies with these prices and limited editions especially. There is no doubt this car is cool, but not at the prices at sticker then add dealer markup, it's a joke. The materials are cheap and let's all remember it's a Corolla. If you want to spend this much on a Corolla and you're fine with it, have fun.
Always nice to see a woman driving a manual like a boss
This car is unattainable because of the crazy dealer mark-up, when it's actually available that is.
I agree, get one if you can. They'll be a collector car in a decade.
USA and Canadian pricing is so odd on these vehicles. The GRC and EN are a terrible price in Canada compared to US pricing. WRX is an amazing value in Canada compared to US pricing.
Toyota if you want one to last more than a couple of years.
Its great looking and will be fun to drive. However pricey and add dealer extra fees, and markups, its way too much…
Other than the price, my main gripe is the size. It's a bit more cramped than I would prefer.
Today's Corolla hatch is like a Matrix built to 3/4 scale. I would like to know where Toyota gets the data that proves North Americans have gotten
thinner and shorter in the last 10 years. 🤨
Poor Volkswagen will stay in the repair shop*but the Toyota will be low maintenance ❤️
Nice car! Will last decades unlike a VW Golf
yeah, it's centuries for the Golf, not decades like for the Corolla, which will be all rusted out in only a few, and with the typical oil drinking for Toyota and terrible turbo engines, one with less cylinders will only shorten the unremarkable longevity of modern, post 90s Toyota cars.
@@Brian-jv8iy lol nonsense VW = junk
@@Brian-jv8iy that’s funny because every VW has rust around the hatch, badges and rocker panels and meanwhile there’s more 30 year old Toyotas on the road than any other vehicle 😂

Golf R is way too common at car meets and events. GR corolla will draw crowds. Its a unicorn. Way more reliable too.
From the look at your coffee cups, it looks like Andrea had A LOT of fun driving this one! 😂
I’m sad that. In AMERICA they mark this up 10,000. 😢
Cute little play car, but not for that money as there is better and more luxurious options. Enjoyed the video and your perspective.
The physical controls of the GR Corolla, but the bigger space and packaging of the Golf R. Sigh, the perfect car doesn't exist.
No spare tire, like my ‘22 WRX… sigh…
I'd like one, but if you can't get one, its kind of a moot point...

I think a wrx is a better daily awd for much less at market cost. But I do love the gr if I can find one at msrp.
But very fugly.
Wrx probably better for a family. But it doesn't have the looks or cool factor of the GR.
~20 years ago I wanted a new STI. It was right around $50k in Canada. Focus RS was $60k 6 years ago. So this car to be priced at 45.5k msrp is fair. This thing isn’t expensive at MSRP. Just have to be patient and wait.
STI was $50k 20 years ago? I find that very hard to believe. Focus RS was never $60k. Stop it.
Barely more expensive than a Prius these days :)

Easy to double check if you wish. Again this is Canadian prices, but I’m sure if you’re from USA you can check go see what 2004 STi cost then vs GR Corolla today.
Toyota's manufacturing process seem very adaptable. One minute they're making specialized limited production race car and the next, it could be mechanized killing machines (LOL). Anyways, very adaptive system which makes more sense when long term survivability is preferred over quick profits.
I just drove the core edition of this car. One of, if not the most fun car(s) I have ever driven. The Golf R at least in my area is $48k,
The Toyota they were willing to sell me the GR for sticker at $38k. I know $10k isn't a lot of money to some people, but it is for me.
I wanna get one to satisfy my small-ish fast car needs but it might be too fast for my wife to use lol
Love everything about it, but that rear fender..🥴
This car is great for Toyota fans and I’m glad it exists. However, especially in Canada, the golf r is simply superior in every conceivable way. More power. More tune/mod friendly. More comfortable. More spacious. More features (by a LOT). Nicer quality. Better suspension, etc. If you wanted a die hard track focused light weight car the CTR is superior as well. Again though, I’m very glad it exists.
2022 Golf R in Ontario used markets are 60k. Absolutely crazy! And the stupid touch interior ruins the car overall.
The rear end is too funky for me.
Kardashian esque
I went with a Golf R. I didn’t even bother looking at a 50K Corolla. It's too slow in a straight line. It's too cheap inside, and its track performance isn't good enough for me to look over everything it's missing. A tuned Golf R can push 400hp. You can't really tune the Corolla. Toyota didn't leave enough on the bone. All these reviews say they like the GR better, but none of them are buying them. It makes me think Toyota is paying to get these favorable reviews.
This Hot🔥 Hatch Never Fails,A Good A+,Tej Parker Should Own This Car 🇺🇸.
Nobody is buying this car for gadgets, luxury and features. It’s all about performance on a budget. Frankly I’d like to see it even more stripped down to lessen the price and lower the curb weight. I’d love to see a type r vs gr corolla comparison.
I have had a bunch but this one is AMAZING
It would really be nice if Canadians got more choice in automobiles. There's so many vehicles sold in Japan and Europe we don't get here in Canada and if Canadians did get them we would be happier as we would cars closer to what we want/ need
The sounds is what I miss with EV's. Still it is nice to have the Toyota GR Corolla as a fun weekend car.
While the GR Corolla is a good effort, does the world really need still another hot hatch? I would have rather seen a resurrected mid-engine MR2 with AWD which would have essentially owned its market segment if a well equipped version with modern safety and convenience features could be had for less than US$70K.
"Does the world really need need still another hot hatch?" Depends on where you live in the world. In the US, we desperately need more cars like this.
I would buy this car. I would lease the Golf R.
You guys can't be serious with this comparison? lol. The GR Corolla may have be better compared with the GTI. The R is miles ahead of this knockoff. Stay in your lane...
The cars that no one can buy at msrp !
$50k for this and how many years to wait for one?
Pass.
Not a comfortable daily driver in my opinion, this is more of a track ready vehicle for weekend hooligans.
Golf R for the win.
Maybe we can actually get one of these or a Golf R at MSRP sometime this year and not at crazy markups! doubt it though
It will happen just be patient. The economy will slowdown and with interest rates high they won't be selling these cars like before.Don't forget that wealthy people don't buy Toyota or VW products and the average buyer of these cars are middle class who are getting hit hard by rising interest rates on their mortgages.
I honestly wouldn't pay MSRP for this or Golf R. MSRP is about 10k overpriced. I have no desire to drop $60k total on some riced out econo hatch

It takes 10x the time to build this than the regular Corolla so there is something to the hand made remarks buy Toyota.
Glad to see a visceral hot hatch from traditionally white bread Toyota, but 60k for the one that has some features is absolutely WILD. I would get a G70 with AWD that can actually slide on pavement over this, or one of the N products from Hyundai and save a ton of cash.
I don't know about this "prove your love of the brand" thing they are doing for the Morizo allocations, but that just sounds...creepy...
I had a Veloster N and sold it last week to make room for my GR Corolla.
The problem with sporty cars that are fwd is you get horrible wheel hop under hard acceleration, and moderate to severe understeer when cornering.
The very best platforms for a sports car is either awd or rwd.
That's why you don't see any front wheel drive Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis etc.
fwd not good for sports cars.
The Golf R is available for purchase…the GR Corolla is not. Guess the choice is made for you unless you had an order in early on the GR…especially in Canada.
Or you can get a base WRX for $33,100 plus tax…
