Short of weight because your racing, I can't see getting a carbon fiber bike. Yet this is competatively light for alloy. In fact there is an amateur XC build on youtube put together by a guy using the hardtail version that is just over 20 lbs.
I was thinking about a new xc race bike, but instead threw a 120 SID Ultimate on my aluminum BMC Two Stroke hardtail. That thing is a keeper now and looks sick.
I'm into it. Alloy is such a good material, and the reasonable cost that comes with buying a (even this fairly expensive alloy) frame is welcome in this economy.
This is perfect, I wish there were more options for a FS aluminium bike with short travel. Extra points for no stupid proprietary parts or through-the-headset cable routing. This is a mountain biker's mountain bike!
The Chisel hardtail was a great bike..light enough to race XC, but throw a 120mm fork on & it's surprisingly capable..plus being alloy, quite a bit cheaper. I see the same for this bike...would be a fun little ripper especially where a long travel bike is just overkill.

I have recently start to race in marathon MTB races. This should be PERFECT bike for me, cheeper than carbon, good geo, 2 water botles, much lighter than my alu trail bike which I ride on marathons... Im just curious about longevity of seatstays considering they are made of alu and no pivots... Really good bike though...
That was a big concern of mine too - I can see flexstays working fine on carbon fibre, or even steel frames, but I can't imagine aluminium being great at dealing with that level of fatiguing over the longer term.
@@RossFinnie If it's any measure of durability, I'm still riding a 2015 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp alloy hardtail (when it was a cross-country bike). I've ridden the crap out of it with no signs of fatigue issues. Even with having an FS, I still ride that HT on a lot of singletrack.
I just recently sold my 22' Chisel to get a full sus XC and honestly, i miss it and shouldn't have sold it. But with this thing out now, I'd really sell it and pick up one. Don't mind carbon but i love the old school durability of Aluminum and not having to be so careful. It would truly be my all in one bike. Adventure and race machine and wont be so scared to drop it hard if it happens. More companies need to give us the same option.
What makes you miss the Chisel? I am debating on to get a light carbon hardtail or something like this full sus Chisel. I only ride on blue xc trails so I’m thinking I probably don’t need a full suspension. My current bike is an aluminum hardtail.
@@curtiscampbell4897 This may be a long response but bare with me. I bought that bike because Ive always enjoyed hardtails; always loved them. I bought it because I also couldn't afford a Full Sus. But I do want to race and also ride and do adventures on it which you DEFINITELY can do! But where I live it's a good mix of everything so I said, "I don't need full Sus" But the more I ride, I realized I wanted that back suspension because it really opens up the door on the terrain I ride. On my now full Sus, I went from having my rear end hurt me because I'm sitting while riding over rocky and bumpy terrain to now I pretty much ride anything and it's actually a joy to ride whatever it is and I can ride harder without thinking. But I miss the hardtail for the simplicity and durability. I like how "naked" the bike felt, I love how simple it felt but I wanted something I could do adventures on and not stress about dropping the bike, this Chisel FS now gives me the ability to have the ride quality I NOW say I prefer and durability of aluminum. But out of every hardtail, the Chisel is the main pick for me. Thing is a rocket ship, it's light and feels like a box and dirt bike in one.
A bold color for frame only...but I'm still interested. I just bought an Epic Hardtail and it's great but I still crave a full sus, and I do not have $6000 to spend on a carbon FS. This looks perfect for a midwest quiver killer.
Intense still has their Sniper T Elite on sales for $2999 online. Even though I am a Specialized fan, I like it better than the Specialized. Your LBS should honor the price if you want to buy it locally. It is carbon with a better component set. I just got the Pro for $4000 out the door. It is amazing!!!!!
@@streddaz my old camber 29 was 110mm front and back and like a 69 degree head angle. 80 or 90 mm stem. The later ones got a bit more travel but I belive they were still fairly sporty geo and with the option of an alloy frame. Also modern XC geo is fairly similar to where short travel trail bikes were not that long ago.
I just bought the HT Chisel a month ago 😅😭! I LOVE the ride of that bike (it's the best part and you can only feel it), but if this had been available then, I would've seriously considered it!
Considering the wagon wheels, larger tires and disc brakes compared to my 20 Year old Santa Cruz superlight. That is a really good effort at keeping the weight low. i.e. the dropper post also.
OK, admitting that I’m an old man. I’m pretty sure my first X-country race bike had a 3x front. I love the idea of this bike but I can’t imagine that on rolling cross country trails that I would be happy with a 1x? I have a 1x right now, a Trek Stache, but it’s the kind of bike that I like to use to just roll along, climb anything I want. Can a 1x with 12 or even 13 speeds always give you the right gear to spin or hammer as you wish? I guess, can a 1x be more than a recreational bike? I have not seen what the pros ride right now so I guess if I just watched a couple of races I would have my answer. :)
One by with the right tooth count up front and a wide range cassette is plenty. All the pros use 1x. I think they may change the front chainring a for a couple more or less front teeth depending on course and XCC vs XCO races.
Thing is… the bike market being what it is atm, you can now pick up an Epic Comp for less than the price of the new Chisel Comp. UK price £2700 for the Chisel Comp, Balfe’s Bike (London) £2695 for the Epic Comp. GX vs Deore blend, Sid SL vs Sid, 12kg vs 11kg… five quid cheaper…
they had an aluminum epic in the past. It was the best deal around. Still have it. May look at the new chisel so i won't have to deal with the brain shock anymore.
I will choose the Element Aluminium because has more advanced geo with the variable geometry system and because has a normal BB, not a press fit. But they don´t sell the frame appart.
Tempting offer in Specialized portfolio. I'm wondering if the stock shock could be replaced with something that would produce more travel (e.g. 120 - 130 instead of 110 mm) and if yes, how this would affect the geometry.

I don't get why they have to name this a Chisel. THe Chisel name has been legendary as the best hardtail alloy bike frame for years. They couldve revived the Epic FSR Alloy.

I really like the idea of this bike but I would still prefer carbon fiber. I just picked up a new 2023 Intense Sniper T Pro on sale from Intense for $4,000 out the door. Similar geometry but carbon fiber and far superior component set due to the sale pricing. I'd also like to see this compared to the Intense Carbon 951 sold at Costco. I'll keep an eye on this one in the future. Ride on!

I dońt know why nowadays all aluminum alloys are so heavy. My Element TO with shock was 1,9kg the frame only. Aluminium Scandium, and my Hard Tail chínese was 1,2kg in M size. Now the weigt is 2,9 for dual and near 2kg for HT. Crazy😢
The 2 basic models use a RS Recon Silver RL. Pretty bad fork. That's the same fork that PB absolutely roasted when they tested the Cannondale Habit a few weeks ago. Should have put a Suntour or X-fusion fork on those bikes. Hopefully that fork isn't so bad as to ruin what could be a great entry level bike for a lot of people. Frame seems pretty dialled.
It's really heavy because of the steel stanchions and the rebound adjust is like an on/off switch. The stroke is actually pretty smooth though and you can rally the Motion Control damper surprisingly hard before it starts to sh*t its pants. For context I'm testing the Chisel FS ATMO and was expecting the fork to really hold it back like you, but rode 110km on it last night and was pretty impressed.
In my opinion, three things should have come differently on this bike: Flat handlebar, shifter and rear derailleur XT, in addition to the Fastrack tires at the front and Renegade at the rear. The bike would be more racing and more salable in my humble opinion.

Strange, a dually with proper tyres and a dropper seems to be very far off from a rigid bike with 45c tyres and drop bars. How did you come to that conclusion based on this bike? I think a rigid XC hardtail with 2" tyres might be able make that case but not this.
@@SevenStanesMBTtotally agree. As soon as "gravel" became cool suddenly everyone here ditched their xc hardtails for rough fire road rides as you apparently need a certain bike for "gravel". Too bad fireroads have ruts, holes and 40% grade pinches. Now I spend way more time waiting for them to push their bikes up and down fireroads while they simultaneously tell me how I need a gravel bike.
Maybe I'm just fucked in the head like this, but I wanna buy the base model a size down from usual and make it a dropbar bikepacking bike. Sell the fork and replace it with an inverted one for easy bag mounts to also make it sprung mass. That triangle will take a frame bag no problem too. Probably do GRX levers and then swap on some 4 pot deore calipers for braking with the extra weight. Someone with more money than me do this and report back 🤣

The Camber was really a trail bike. It had 120mm of travel and trail geo. The Chisel, is an XC bike and pretty much an Alloy Epic.
The camber could have been a really amazing bike without the proprietary rear shock.

I like this bike, but for $400 more you can get the 2024 cannondale scalpel. It has similar specs. and geometry but is 4 or 5 lbs lighter.

I love my 2018 Chisel that I bought used a year ago. Aluminum alloy the best material because we can recycle them

Maybe I'm just fucked in the head like this, but I wanna buy the base model a size down from usual and make it a dropbar bikepacking bike. Sell the fork and replace it with an inverted one for easy bag mounts to also make it sprung mass. That triangle will take a frame bag no problem too. Probably do GRX levers and then swap on some 4 pot deore calipers for braking with the extra weight. Someone with more money than me do this and report back 🤣
