This game's soundtrack has been a long project. My first attempt was to complete the game, save/document the music, then load saves later when recording. I think I got to just the final 2-3 missions. The second approach was when I discovered Fabien Sangland's article on reverse engineering the game assets fabiensanglard.net/reverse_engineering_strike_commander/ The end result of this was that now I've got the XMI MIDI files but when I tried to play them with different XMI players, some of the instruments were off. With all MT-32 custom patches loading normally. The third and final aspect was to find the reason for the off sounds! Eventually with the help of the ORIGIN FX demo files and by tweaking the AIL2 library's XPLAY.EXE source code, the outcome can be heard here and especially in part 2. Enjoy!
Incredible work. Sadly XMI - MIDI playback directly from the files themselves has issues in almost every DOS game. A massive barrier to showing people the wonderful Roland versions of these soundtracks. Especially bad in Ultima III IV and V since they didn't originally support Roland cards, and require custom instrument instructions.
I played this game as a teen when it came out. It was so much fun I’ll never forget the game. That’s cool you did this. I love your work. Your a music conductor in modern form in my eyes
Thank you so much for putting that together. Its very hard to find a Roland Recording. I had only a Soundblaster, and it still amazes me how much better Roland sounds. The Tactical Operations Soundtrack seems to have some kind of overhaul by Origin applied to it. Sounds a little more powerful
Thanks for your good efforts. As an ordinary god-fearing AWE32-having working man, I'm quite sure it actually sounded just like this originally, but somehow the old soundfiles have been replaced with new ones that sound worse, and now you have to go back to the fancy version to get the full effect.
Those where the days... sadly I haven't had a MT-32 back then. But I played the CD Version with General MIDI Sound on my Spea Media FX. Because this card could only really be used for General MIDI, all the SFX came from an AWE32. It was a good combination back in the 90s. Sweet Memories. The thing is that it isn't the same when I play it today. I have no CRT anymore and I have seen so much more. So I keep my memories. But I still love to hear the music.
Wow I never heard the Roland MT-32 version of this BGM. I had the CD version of Strike Commander, and the soundtracks didn't sound this good from what I remember.
I'll need to try the CD version myself. The add-on Tactical Operations does add General MIDI support but I believe this CD version is yet another thing.
39:02 is the cinematic of our hero's final meeting and confrontation with Walters. 40:48 is the cinematic where an informant manages to get information about an attack against Mendez from a member of the Wildcats at Selim's. 42:17 is the cinematic where our hero lands his F-16 at a base to steal the F-22. 44:51 is the cinematic where our hero makes it to base with the F-22. 45:36 is the cinematic where our hero in the F-22 triumphs over Prideaux in his YF-23.
Thanks for the nostalgic flashback. I haven’t heard this music since I played the game in the early 90s. You have no idea how special this was for me. Thank you. ✌🏼
Although I was an avid devotee of the Wing Commander series, somehow missed this one back in day. Perhaps it didn't run good enough on our 486/33MHz...
@@PekkaLeppaluoto I played all of Chris Roberts games back then! Yes I think Strike commander and pacific strike were a little bit later. Pacific strike was another great origin game that used the same engine as strike commander. ✌🏼
Flight music by Nenad Vugrinec and Dana Glover. Cinematics music by Dana Glover, Marc Schaefgen and Randy Buck. Option scene music by Nenad Vugrinec. Additional music my Martin Galway.

New subscriber. Well done 👏.
30 years this month! Released April 1993. I was there...
Congratulations! I searched for this and here it is! My favourite game as a kid and remains very special in that way. "You've won this time"

This and Privateer soundtracks were my favorite from Origin early 90s titles.
It wasn’t an origin game but betrayal at krondor had some great music from back in the early 90s

Doesn't the CD contain the original MIDI tracks? Is it all CD-audio?
@@gerodinis The CD version had wav files.
Loving this raw nostalgia injected into my veins. Great work mate!

This is awesome, thank you for recording the soundtrack! I think there is quite an unique sound atmosphere of the Roland MT-32 in this game.
ah so satisfying to witness these stay alive and current! now if we can just get a buffed up remake of the game lol
back again to heap praises...i just need extended tracks lmao i just need it lol
Do you happen to know whom the composer was for this? It’s genius
