  • We spent two weeks in Sicily in July and after all the research that I had done I thought it was going to AMAZING! Just like being on a Greek Island I thought. Boy was I wrong. I must admit there were parts of Sicily that were gorgeous, but not all of it. Watch and see what to hit and what to miss when going to Sicily.

    I just saw this and I thought it was hilarious! Let's start by clarifying this: Sicily is the poorest part of Italy. It's a land with many issues, political and social issues. I cannot explain all this but just do some research (which clearly you guys didn't do) and you will understand what I m talking about. Having said this, yes, Sicily is bad for services like buses and public transport, rubbish has been a problem for years, roads are bad, and driving is very hard as few follow the basic road rules and I agree it's disgraceful the way is kept. However, I am sorry but the sentence "Nothing to see, Nothing to do" for Catania and Palermo is simply a joke, only someone that didn't finish middle school can state that. You are literally walking on thousands of years of history of human civilization. Jesus, those cities were founded around 734 BC, you have plenty of museums and trace of ancestral human history in every corner plus it's full of art... It's a unique place with a mixture of Arabian, Spanish, and Norman cultures to name a few. Guys, go to Ibiza, to the disco, and have your packet of crisps and a pint.

      it's a poorer region because the bureaucrats pocket the money... But it's not poor at all when it comes to history, fertility and even Mick Jagger lives in Sciacca. This Karen has no clue ,,, all she did was bitch and moan.

    Crazy! “It’s too hot,” she complains in July. “There’s nothing to do,” she complains after ignoring Greek, Roman, Norman ruins and other ancient monuments. “Palermo is boring,” she complains after ignoring museums, artwork, archaeology, and amazing food. Maybe when you go abroad understand where you are going and then you will be able to appreciate what it has to offer. if you don t even know where you are (the place s history, heritage etc) then what do you expect "to see"? • @DaDoctorJ
      @DaDoctorJ Год назад

      "Ridiculous" is trying to justify the dirtiness with the size of the city. There are way larger cities in Europe and in the world that look like hospitals compared to Palermo. Palermo is like a dumpster. Large piles of rubbish in the streets are not normal for a first world country. So it cannot be about the size of the city, it is about the way the city is (not) managed and the justifications people find for the lack of civility, full stop.

    I have never been to Sicily but I have been to South Italy. So I just put a very simple question to Google. "What to do in Palermo".Answers :the Palatine chapel, the catacombs of Zisi, the catacombs of the Capuchins, Kalsa neighbourhood for the Palazzio Abbatellis and to see local crafts, the No mafia museum, the 9th century Palazzo dei Normanni and then once fed up with 'cultshah' you could have have googled Palermo nightlife and be surprised again.
    Forgive me for saying that the only thing that sucks is your prep work. Btw of course it is hot in July. The thing to do anywhere is keep the hours locals keep. It is a well known travellers mistake. Noel Coward in his day wrote a song about it " Mad dogs and Englishmen "

    I came across this video because I'm planning a trip to Sicily. But this entire video just reeks of two people that didn't research at all and had unrealistic expectations.
    1) Nothing to see, nothing to do. Italy (Sicily included) is steeped in history. If that's not your thing, then perhaps you should have thought about that before.
    2) You're complaining that the poorest part of Italy is in fact poor and appears so in comparison to the rest of the country - come on!
    3) You can google the weather at a given time of year for pretty much anywhere in the world. Complaining that a country that's always incredibly hot in summer was hot in July, especially when you could have easily found that out before going there, is just plain dumb.

  • @user-tr7si6zj7b
    @user-tr7si6zj7b 5 месяцев назад +3

    I'm not sure why everything has to be so binary - either something is the best or the absolute worst. I visited Siracusa - it melted my heart, and then stole it. I visited Palermo and it was mixed - there really was a lot of shit, but I think it was dog shit and mainly on the grassed areas. There were also piles of rubbish. But there were also the most unbelievably beautiful sites, scattered all over the city. There was beauty that balanced out the difficulties. And speaking of the difficulties, they go from being alienating to comprehensible when you begin to understand even a little of the history of the place, the troubles it has experienced with the Mafia etc.
    To the limited extent I understand and know Sicily, it feels to me like a complex, fascinating, at times repellent, at times beautiful, seductive place. There's a bit of an anarchic feel to it so it's never exactly what you expect. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse; often it's both at the same time! But at all times, it's very alive.
    This review reflected a POV which is fine, but it was one-sided, totally uninformed, complaining and superficial. And to think the Aussies call the English 'whingeing poms'!

    Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I highly recommended ignoring these two and keep an open mind. Some people have a difficult time adjusting to different places. Sicily is extremely beautiful and the people are amazing. Don't travel there in July/August if you don't like the heat because it can get extremely hot. That's just being an inexperienced traveler and you sound foolish saying it. Also complaining about places being crowded in July...duh have you travelled before in the summer. Also, Italians are on holidays in August and overcrowding at popular destinations is worse. Pointing out negatives like the "rubbish" in a place that has economic issues isn't fair and a lot of it is from tourists that are ignorant. But the positives like the great culture, food, people, beautiful smaller towns like Noto, Ragusa, Taormina, Modica, Cefalu, Agrigento, etc., natural beauty and history far out way any negatives. You're not home with your modern luxuries so be a little more respectful of other cultures that live this way. You may just learn something in the process.

    We recently visited Sicily, and agree with your assessment of Palermo specifically. If you visit Palermo you need to be comfortable with the smell of shit and urine everywhere. You also need to be OK with seeing stacks of garbage piled high in the streets, constantly tripping over waste on the ground, and people trying to run you over as you cross any pedestrian crossing because they just don't care. You also need to be comfortable with being charged double just because you're a tourist, and being aggressively followed and yelled at by people trying to sell you things.
    If you're OK with all of that, it's a pretty interesting city.
    But if you're not - there are a lot of other amazing old cities in the world with incredible histories and a lot of charm, where the people are less aggressive, and can clean up after themselves.

    Palermo is a place you dont need to visit?nothing to do there?it has the largest historic center in Italy. for centuries it was the focal center of the Mediterranean sea , a lot of civilization added such a richness ,one by one, that clearly you are not able to comprehend. Sicily has huge problems , but you can't complain about the fact that is hot in July! go to the sea and refresh yourself or have a Granita. . I'm really sorry you had to see the rubbish, that is one of the known problems, but you have to say it all, the historical center don't have rubbish in sight , unfortunately the high density on people in the city, the small streets, and many other small things create this huge problem we have with rubbish.
    Complaining about the waves and the stones in the beach...well what to say here? next time make some research and go in one of the other 20000 sandy beaches we have in Sicily. regarding the big waves, try pray Poseidon , maybe next time will be better sea ;)
    I invite you to come over and I will organize you a trip, for example visit the Val di Noto full of Baroque, Valle dei templi di Agrigento, Egadi and Eolie Islands, Segesta, Selinunte, Cattedrale di Monreale. Visit the mosaics of Piazza Armerina, Erice Castle, The Saline on Trapani.
    In Palermo go se the Puppet show, visit Teatro Massimo( like the 3rd largest theater in Europe). Go see Cappella Palatina, the Catacombs , the Sicilian Parliament ( oldest in the worlds), Go to see the Markets, try the local food, you didn't even mention the food in the whole video.
    If it's too hot, go out in the evening. If you dont wanna go out in the evening, book yourself a trip in Spring or Autumn.
    Imagine Italy has the largest number for world's heritage sites, beetween the 20 regions of Italy , Sicily has the most (7).

Yes, there are absolutely beautiful places to see (even in Catania) but there are also let downs here and there, and a whole lot of it. Transportation being probably the biggest issue we encountered with poor (more like awful) reliability of train and bus services. Dirt, trash, graffitis (litterally everywhere), etc, being also a thing. Honorable mention to some over hyped attractions (yes, i’m talking about you, Modican chocolat…). All this to say that around day 6 of 8 in Sicily, we where already fed up with the place and thinking of our next stop.

    Just got back from Sicily. A week was certainly enough. Food was nothing special and the people drop litter everywhere. I went on a Coach trip to Etnaland which was amazing and definitely worth it if you have kids and the volcano itself is very impressive but the sicillians on the coach were just throwing thier litter out of the windows and the bus door when we stopped for fuel. It could be such a nice place but a large proportion of the population need to learn how to respect thier own country. Overall it looks like a once beautiful woman abused and beaten by her own children. The beaches are too busy and many of them are private, again they could be beautiful but any of the natural beauty is painted over by the horrific amount of sunbeds and litter. Much, much nicer places in the Mediterranean. Croatia, Corfu and Turkey were my last trips and they were far and away better places to visit. The drought has also effected the landscape.

    I literally just came back from Sicily. Did not hate it, it does not "suck", but it is majorly overrated. As an Italian, It feels like to me like being in a third world country (infrastructure sucks, dirt everywhere, people leeching for money) with first class prices and without the exotic feeling. You want third world you go third world, you want first class you go first class. I did not see the "awesome" place I hear all people talking about. History and arts? There's way better in many places in Italy. Food? Same. Sea? Other places can par, including neighboring countries. Saving the trip: Etna, valley of the temples, Selinunte, Monreale duomo, Ragusa, Zingaro reserve and Palermo. The rest so so, definitely not a "wonder". And if you have to endure the mess, the embarassing dirtiness, and have the feeling you pay (way too much) for things that ought to be be free just to experience "average" (or below average) Italy, just go somewhere else in Italy. You are welcome.
