    This is a lovely way to tell a story. Just sitting with a backdrop and talking like normal people talk. No background music , no editing. Perfect. Thank you. As a Puerto Rican I’m enamored with the idea of living in Italy, land of my ancestors. ❤

      Webhorse, Sicily is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in Europe. I've been there several times - and I think it would take you most of a day to tell the Wilburs of all the things to see and do on your splendid island. (And, I thought Acitrezza sounded familiar! I have been in your town probably 2-3 times. Our friends were from Catania.)

      Oh my gosh! I’m so glad that RUclips threw you at me! Sicily! Going for sure! My husband, who is Peruvian, would love this place! He was not as hot on our quick tour of Italy last year, felt folks were rather cold and opportunistic - but I kept telling him that we had to get out of the touristic areas. I personally love Italy and Sicily - as you’ve described the people - seems like the perfect fit for us too! BTW - LOVE your ‘volley style story telling’. You guys are so likable and I’ve known you via video for 13:28! Haha! Much continued magic as you settle in. I look forward to following your adventures! I’d also be interested in hearing more (I’ll dig around, perhaps you’ve already covered this), how you manage living in Europe with kids and maybe grandkids back in the US. It’s the only thing that keeps me from moving …. 😢

    Grateful I found this video. I spent a semester in Italy in the 1980s and before COVID, I wanted more countries (quantity), instead of quality. Once borders opened up, I went to my "safe" first trip to Europe. Spent my post-COVID birthday (July 2021) mostly in Firenze. Since then, I've been back to Italy 4/5 times, because Italy is me. I spent a week in Sicily in 1988 and loved it. This summer, I'm heading north. Trieste+....cities I've never been. There is something about Italy's everything that speaks to my soul. I've never found it anywhere else in the world. Grazie monto/mille!

    What a fun and good idea. Sitting at a table and having an interesting conversation with each other with that wonderful Sicilian background. It was as if I were there myself. Heartwarming to see how you have been included in the Sicilian community. We ourselves are soon to retire early end of 2025 and then emigrate, so your film also gave some courage to take this step. For a big part it is all about the willing to embrace a new culture, learn a new language and take initiatives to get in contact with the local community. Somethimes it works, somethimes it won't. But there is already much value in trying and being open for the challenge. Europe is a wonderful patchwork, not only of different climate zones, but cultures, customs, architecture, history, languages and I could go on and on. A good place as a base, where you feel at home and have friends, is important and I am happy for you that it went so well. If it gets too hot you can always travel more t he northern part of Europe in the summer months. Greetings from Switzerland.

    yes, the area (Hyblaean Mountains) where we live used to be a seabed. Originally it was a massive underwater volcano, older than Etna. And all the soft stone you see in your property most likely is sea sediment. Once your eyes will be sharp enough, you will see fragments or entire shells in the walls of Noto (or Malta, where it's even more evident)

    • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel  Месяц назад +3

      Thanks. I think it’s really a matter of how much this lifestyle is worth to you. We were never really “all in” in France and that was probably a mistake. I agree that the taxes are really high BUT free healthcare is a big bonus and the cost of living here is very low by comparison to the US. Our property taxes are 204€. No cost for garbage or the dump. Water is cheap. Our food/booze bill is a third of what it was in the US and if you like to garden we just bought enough vegetable starts to feed us for a year. For 10€. So if you like to do that kind of thing and do a little preserving it’s perfect. The only downers are the price of electricity and gas, both of which can be solved with solar panels as this place is endlessly sunny. Food for thought 😉

    Like others, I’ve just come across your videos. I live here and I have to say it’s really refreshing to see the green hills behind you. I just had a weekend near Agrigento (gli archi di pane a San Biagio Platani, go check it out) and the siccità (drought) that’s affecting the island is very noticeable. Especially in the plains of Catania. Small pockets of green but not at all what it should be like in April. Comunque, auguri! Enjoyed the video.

      The Sicilians are not that great with the internet 😆 You’ll have the most luck finding a town you’re really interested in and then finding a good agent. Most of the properties around here are for sale privately and/or not online. I can’t say enough about Palazzolo Acreide. We love it. Noto is beautiful but touristic. We haven’t been yet but we have some friends that rave about Scicli. Too many choices!

    Hi Elizabeth and Brian, this was fun to watch and very informative. I'm a single 59 Dutch and US citizen and would like to move back to Europe at some point. I'm fluent in French, so France is my focus. I'm looking at the area above Menton, near the Italian border (not the coast but more inland in the mountains). I'm ok with 4 seasons, but like you, I would get depressed with a lot of cloud coverage. I've looked at Italy as well, as it's so much cheaper, and started learning Italian. I'm torn...Would love to go fossil hunting, the fossils looked amazing!!!

    • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel  Месяц назад

      Right? It’s rough. I thought France was going to be it, but I never really fit. It was hard. Italy has been way easier. Tough call. We looked at apartments around Menton, but it wasn’t cheap. I would say definitely spend a lot of time where you’d like to live before the trigger. The people in the village could be truly warm and welcoming or they could be closed. I think the key is to fitting in would be to find French people who have traveled a bit and are happy to speak some English with you (if you’re not 100% fluent). It will make all of the difference.

    Forgot to add: Your US drivers license can be used only for 1 year in Italy. You must then obtain an Italian drivers license. The written drivers test is really difficult, even for Italian native speakers. The test is not offered in English. However, in your case, you are lucky because it is offered in French (due to World War 1).

Everything I’ve learned about Sicily makes it very interesting place and I’m glad that it is a friendly and supported place. Have you had any experience with the mafia or with crime in general? Finally, from what I’ve been told about Italy healthcare gets worse the further south, you go. Living there and advanced age could be more challenging because the less sophisticated healthcare technology that is available there.

    We are currently living in the north of Italy and have often wondered about Sicily. The thing that scares me the most is the heat in the summer because I can't stand the heat here in Venice. But I've been told it's more of a dry heat like Arizona and not the high humidity we have up here.

I grew up traveling Italy with my parents, and we spent a few years living in Trecastagni near Catania and then later in Greve just south of Firenze. Jersey boy here- Placido(immigrant from 1966) its nice to see more people airing their experience with Sicily and their people who many including northern Italians will never come to fully understand and or appreciate the complexity of our personality. Formed by our rich and many times turbulent crazy history along with personal family experiences is what defines us all, in short Sicilians are driven by strong passion for better and at times for worse. If you tell a newly northern Italian that you just might have met that you are also Italian and then they find out that you're from Sicily their respond will be Oh!! you're a Sicilian. if you outright tell that same person that you're a Sicialian then they respond as if you think you're an elitist, funny but its true. I truly hate to see less and less of the Sicilian dialect being spoken as it's known to be the oldest and first true known romance language and not a dialect being older and closer to vulgar latin than the Italian language that is spoken today . I know there are efforts these days to preserve many of these fading dialects

      Thanks for that. I had a weird experience in Turin last night with the owner of a little pasta shop. When I told him I moved to Sicily? He said “Why didn’t you move to Italy?” Unbelievable. I had another man I met at a party last week tell me that in Sicily you work to eat and that’s about it. I agree. How hard can you ride someone’s a** for working at a hard job FT and bringing home 800€/month? They’re two completely different worlds and many kids are forced to leave Sicily as a result. So it exacerbates the problem…
