mixitblendit there's a huge difference between using reverb, compression, and EQ as opposed to autotune. No matter how great of a singer you are, you need compression and EQ, because you're singing into a microphone that adds it's own characteristics. You need EQ to make to cut out unwanted frequencies so it sits in the mix right and sounds more natural, and compression to help with the levels, seeing as the human voice is a very dynamic instrument. Seeing as condenser mics are the most sought after for vocals, that's why compression is very important. If you used a dynamic mic, you can get away with very little to no compression. The thing about autotune, is that you can be a shitty singer and be super pitchy, and then they make you sound like you can sing, which is extremely lame. not to mention autotune gives off a robotic sound, especially if it's abused. I have no problem with the idea of slightly tuning vocals as long as it's subtle and you're tuning what already sounds like a good take, but it's stupid to tune shitty singers. if you can't sing, then you shouldn't be a singer, especially not one recording in a studio... also I see nothing wrong with using reverb if you want your song to sound like it's in a certain place. it's super important for some genres. when it comes to effects, i'm not that into most of them, but i still see nothing wrong with it. there's a difference between effects and tools. effects are simply to add an interesting texture to the sound, but a tool such as autotune is simply to make a poor performance sound good.

The thing about autotune, is that you can be a shitty singer and be super pitchy, and then they make you sound like you can sing, which is extremely lame. not to mention autotune gives off a robotic sound, especially if it's abused. I have no problem with the idea of slightly tuning vocals as long as it's subtle and you're tuning what already sounds like a good take, but it's stupid to tune shitty singers. if you can't sing, then you shouldn't be a singer, especially not one recording in a studio... also I see nothing wrong with using reverb if you want your song to sound like it's in a certain place. it's super important for some genres. when it comes to effects, i'm not that into most of them, but i still see nothing wrong with it. there's a difference between effects and tools. effects are simply to add an interesting texture to the sound, but a tool such as autotune is simply to make a poor performance sound good.

No matter what microphone you use, if the song is going to compete, it needs a good amount of compression. If it had no compression it would sound unprofessional.

I know all the shit hanging out around this guy but this guy has produced so many great pop albums, we owe him the best commercial pop albums of the 2000s and all those great musical moments. Without him, Kesha, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and others would not have had the expected success. He's a production genius and it's a shame he did some shit on the side because since he no longer produces the big names in commercial music it has really deteriorated and you can see that without him the artists are trying to make good albums: Katy Perry and her last album is empty, something is missing and the success is no longer at point, Kesha released an album without flavor and it does not work etc, there is more those pop bangers that dominated the 2010s and it's sad.

He's such a humble guy though! It doesn't really seem like he cares about the fame. Every rips on auto tune, but really whats wrong with it? You use compression on a voice to smooth it out to mimic control. You use reverb and delay to mimic space, you use EQ to enhance how the vocal sounds. So when it comes down to it why not throw on auto tune, its already "fake" anyway. Anyways I don't want to get in a big argument lol thats just my opinion! :P
