The only thing that seems legitimately scary about this site is the feeling of "I might get a virus in my computer" while clicking through those pages.
@BTIsaac You're correct in saying that you can download a malicious file from a webpage, but you'd know if it had been downloaded, and you would have to run it.
@BTIsaac They can't 'download themselves' into any of your computer's folders, you can always select which directory they are downloaded to. They can't 'self-recover' without being run either.

This honestly seems like something done by an art major who has way too much time on his/her hands. Since it gained popularity, they keep updating the website.
Kurt Koller, the creator of the Polybius myth -- an arcade game that's supposed to be an experimental mind-control experiment -- is also from Milwaukee and was around the same age as these guys you mentioned in this video. I wouldn't be surprised if he had something to do with this. Honestly, after the first few minutes of watching this, I immediately felt like this was some edgy Gen X'er art project.
The Subgenus video was played on MTV back in late 80s early 90s. Possibly played on Night Flight (USA network). Totally of the Gen X generation, although the creators were late Boomers. They have a channel here on RUclips.
as someone who's gone to uw-milwaukee's film school, about 2 minutes into this video all i could think was "this is def some college students senior art project"
Yea agreed. I'm a student at Milwaukee institute of art and design and this seems like the kind of thing one of the students here or at uw Milwaukee would do to mess with people. It's honestly really wild to know stuff behind one of these videos is so close to me pfft
LHOOQ is French, when you spell it out in French it sounds like 'Elle a chaud au cul' (pronouncing like : L ah sho oh kuu) which means she sleeps with a lot of dudes. I remember seeing that in my art history class.
Kayo you know actually that’s really interesting. I visited the website out of curiosity and my first click took me to a page only of pictures of guys with their dicks out and the same two naked women posted over and over again all the way to the end of the page with no clickable pictures, some were gifs. Really weird. I thought I was being trolled lol
it truly means the world to me that you covered this while censoring the flashing lights. horror (and whatever this is) is often not accessible and this allows me to enjoy the mystery with you. thank you!
The flashing lights aren't censored but thx I guess it makes it less annoying and useless but also it is still there there is none for the mass of flesh
Just to clarify, the contact information on the site aren't leaks. They're already public information. You could get in a lot of trouble through contacting them, but they aren't leaks.
When I think of a dangerous internet rabbit hole, I think of Heaven's Gate, which actually took lives. This is just an art piece and there's no proof of anything dangerous to come out of it at all.
@@Radlkall I don't want to search for it right now either, as I'm alone at home in the evening, but I think it was a suicide cult. I could be wrong, though.
@Radlkall heaven's gate was a cult in the 60s iirc, they thought humanity was destined to evolve past physical forms and return to a spaceship tailing the hale-bopp comet. it ended in a mass suicide; however, their website is still up. no idea who's hosting it or paying for it to be hosted.
IMHO this is 100% troll work. While the people who made it were artists I noticed some interesting ties to some prank calls shows I used to listen to. Madhouse was ran by Carlito (who passed away 3 years ago) and at random would shout HORSE and some of the prank calls revolved around the subject because he went to a ranch his family had in Puerto Rico during the summer. Also New Mexico was frequently used by Brad from Phone Losers of America (AKA PLA). I don't know if the artists were inspired by them but some of the things I saw on that page reminds me of things they would do on a webpage level. Make it look like a real conspiracy and prank a bunch of people for the lulz. I just get that vibe from looking at it and laughed a bunch of times which I normally don't do while watching your content.
To everyone that’s scared: it’s obvious this is just an art project or ARG, nothing more. This screams trying to be disturbing with random images and “mind control” videos, it could be a group of people who like sharing their weird art with the world
I actually once chatted with a guy who made a very similar website (which was basically an experiment or an art project) and he told me that the site was made using AI with very esoteric inputs, very easy to do if you are familiar with coding (in his words). I suppose this website is the same tbh.
this reminded me of the anime series cowboy bebop's episode: 'brain scratch', which covers a topic similar to what this whole thing is about. the interesting part of it is that, the "cult" portrayed in the show, originated from the mind of a very young hacker who fell in coma after a medical negligence. he tried to "control" the minds of people with religious and very philosophical imaginery sent with high frecuency pulse he somehow manipulated within his vegetative state in a hospital. the cult ideals and media used to "brain wash" kinda resembles the video you showed at the start, it's trippy and it leaves you thinking for a bit. nice!
The depth of this arg is absolutely insane and downright horrific. The sites never end, man. I just keep clicking and clicking and clicking, and there's always something intriguing
lol. The Church of the Subgenius was started by a couple of unemployed stoners back in the 70s or 80s as I recall. The story was these guys and their friends were sitting around and one said "why aren't we millionaires?" Then one said "we're not geniuses." So another said "I guess we're just subgeniuses." Hence the name of the church. Their motto was "If Jim Jones could get 800 people to drink cyanide, we can get 800 people to give us a dollar." From what I remember they rented a building in Texas? and started their services which were actually "bring your own bottle/beer" affairs. They chose as their deity "Bob Dodd or Dobbs" who was the cartoon guy on all the government informational pamphlets back in the 50s and 60s. The church named the cartoon guy "Bob". I think their main thing was to raise a few bucks without really working and to also spoof on organized religion and it's nonprofit status, which I understand they had.
KNew someone would post this so I wouldn't have to try to explain it. The thing is if you weren't there when it happened, you probably just won't get it. It was definitely pre-internet
I'm a member of the Church of The Subgenius . It was a great network for freaks. Devo, Pee Wee Herman , and many comic book artists as well comics and musicians are in it. There is a documentary out now . Worth a watch. ..
Dr Bob's face was around New England college campuses in the 80s. It doesn't sound much like a Texas thing. Maybe they'd have laughed and end up at a t!tt! bar and almost forgot about it the next morning. Because: Slack! ya need slack, son!
CoS was a deliberately lowbrow Texas slacker riff on Scientology, borrowing liberally from Discordianism. If you weren't there it won't make much sense now. As someone else said, it's in the vein of hacker culture ha-ha only serious. The material at the beginning of this lame video was often carried on Night Flight, the 1980s late night show that mostly recycled pop culture ephemera to entertain post-party people and security guards working the graveyard shift. In this era it's about as subversive as Negativland. IOW, not at all. You're looking at cave art.
"I doubt anything bad...will really happen...." *Accidentally brainwashes 1.7M people into sleeper agents to be activated by an unknown (possibly criminal) entity. *
@Spoiled_Shadow Bob specifically got his hands on filmora9. Try filmora9 for free and brainwash your friends by making videos of insane conspiracy fuel and a creepy website today!!
This was great!! Definitely just a weird art project- the lack of film credits and fake profiles was probably just to ramp up the mystery, there’s a very clear group of real artists linked to this, both artistically and geographically. Interesting and bizarre nonetheless!
For sure! I see a lot of similar strange art projects on neocities, although this one clearly has a lot more time and effort involved. It's amazing what you can do with HTML and a surface-level knowledge of conspiracy theories.
Fun fact: the male narrator in the first clip talking about never having enough women is in fact the same guy who voices Dr.Kliener in half life 2, he's a prominent subgenius member
Please just consider: Just because the website references content from subgenius it doesn't mean, that it actually belongs to it. Also even if it does, subgenius itself might be an occult organization hiding behind "art" just as Marina Abramovic. LHOHQ Surely depicts a ton of randomness and randomness is always associated with humor. But there clearly is stuff on this website that only people could put there who have a deep knowledge of things that are not supposed to be known to the average guy. Those kind of videos might be an expression of art but this is also the kind of stuff that would be used by the CIA for MK Ultra and psychological torture. The amount of occult symbolism speaks volumes.
@@user-kg7qu8th7c there is a 100 percent certainty that the subgeniuses didn't make this and instead some random art student did, because the subgeniuses are a shitpost religion like discordianism, or the church of the flying spaghetti monster
i found a link to this through a random neocities site i was exploring more than a year ago and more than scared i was confused. after endless clicking i just shrugged it off and totally forgot about it until now lol. its interesting to see how ppl interpret this as something sinister when i never thought that even coming across it completely by surprise. i get the fear of the mindwashing, but even in mkultra, the subjects were either drugged or not in an otherwise sound mental state while being exposed to audios for very extended periods of time after having their memory medically damaged. casual internet users are not gonna accidentally brainwash themselves. this site is nothing to worry about
I suspect the person who "found" the note didn't actually "find" anything. Instead, they are probably the person responsible for the site and was just trying to get traction for the site, sow the seeds of mystery and orchestrate what's essentially nothing more than a troll site.
i remember watching this in 2020 at like 2am and becoming insanely paranoid LMAO. rewatching this in 2023 i STILL have to do it in the daytime because I'm scared at night
That's nonsense, it's like saying if you don't think you are nuts, than that means you are. I think the site obviously has mind control as a theme, but it's not trying to practice it as much as satirize and warn against it. What would be the point of this particular mind control effor, exactly?
I first heard mention of the church of the Subgenius (Church of "Bob" the Subgenuis) after listening to a radio show called "Over the Edge" in the late 80's early 90's. The radio show, done by a group named "Negative Land" was broadcast on KPFA in Berkeley in the late 80's early 90's, and was on around midnight. On the show, the content consisted of storytelling, bizarre audio collages, and listener interaction via call ins. Very "Devoesque". You basically could say whatever you wanted. My friends and I used to often listen and participate during the late 80's and early 90's. Some of the characters on the show were: the Weatherman (useless, seedless) and Metallurgy Man. Sometime in the 2000's I saw that "Over the Edge" was being sold in later years on CD. I don't know if Negative Land is affiliated with LHOHQ. Negative Land was based in in the San Francisco Bay Area to my knowledge, not Milwaukee. LHOHQ seems like an example of Net Art to me, it is exactly the kind of thing someone from Negative Land would pull. Intriguing, and with material that does not make a lot of sense. A former friend of mine, named Mike, worked for KPFA in the mid-nineties. Maybe he was "Mike 84", who knows.
I think people of a certain age see this and think, oh this is the kind of discordian weirdness my friends and I were into in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Now people see it and think it’s a cult or some kind of conspiracy 😆 I almost wish I could time travel back to myself at 18 to say “in 30 years people are going to think this is so deep!” 18 year old me would think that was hilarious.
The internet of the mid nineties was loaded with this stuff. I remember spending many hours between 1996-2000s on these obscure art sites. Then Macromedia Flash got popular and these poorly coded HTML art pages fell away. I miss the internet before social media and smart phones.
Agreed. In the late 90s I made a (very poorly coded and primitive) experimental art webpage with flashing neon lights, hidden text, and links that redirected you to other nonsensical pages. I didn't even know what Church of the Subgenius was, but I think I was picking up on the style of all the other art pages that were popular at that time.
Lol I remember in 96 or 97 spending hours on the net viewing random pages like this and as a middle school aged child was somewhat fascinated by the self made pages thought "if they could do it anyone can" thats around the time before even MySpace came along a bunch of kids from my school were making little personal geocities website pages about themselves with a picture of themselves and talking about themselves and listing all their favorite things to do, music, food...lol we created our own caveman-like social media at the time.. Social media was the downfall of not just the internet but society. But that's for another discussion
it's quite obvious a really nice art project ! with a lot of fucking work! it's so nostalgic and i absolutely love it! did the artist take credit for his work ? :)
I really like that you mentioned the flashing lights on the site. Of course lots of people decide to look on their own, and it’s good to know what might be on it since most channels do edit flashing lights.
Dude this feels like a creepypasta but the comments assuring us it was an art project makes me feel better. Never thought I'd be scared of "creepypastas" again since my teen years. I'm in early 20s now
It is strange to me that your gen can see this type of 'project' with more of a potential life to it. As someone that grew up alongside the internet in the 90's, 'crappy sites' like this would be a commonplace and spawned meme culture basically
Less than five minutes in, as soon as a clip from the site starts playing, it becomes obvious the site is just a subgenius project. It’s impressive though that after forty or so years this stuff is still being produced. There’s still a weekly radio show in my city. I got bored with it in the eighties but it’s comforting somehow to know that others keep this stuff going.
This is a old MTV "Cult of Bob" video. It used to come on at like 1am, it was 30 mins long, constantly telling you that you have been programmed and will be"turned on" at a future date. I never liked it, my friends and I ate a lot of LSD, many of them really got a kick out of it, it just creeped me out.
@@coreycasciano3255 I was beginning to wonder if I was alone in this very clear memory. Thanks for responding!!!! Boy those days were a walk in the park compared to today
@@aperturedroneworks6254 no doubt. Do you remember when this was playing on cable TV, I want to say early mid 90s, but I have been around longer than I care to admit :-) and have trouble remembering time in a linear fashion, I am just terrible at it. Anyway I do remember that it was only one year, it wasn't something I saw after that year, maybe it was shown and I wasn't aware of it, but it always creeped me out, and I am not the type to be superstitious and was completely unaware of how television programming actually worked. It was definitely high strangeness. Take care Friend.
It was made by a parody cult called the Church of the SubGenius who thought, or I guess pretended to think, that a planet called Planet X would crash into Earth and only the believers of J. R. "Bob" Dobbs would survive. There's a lot more to it than I care to explain so research it yourself Edit: Didn't realize that he talked about in the video itself, oh well
13:38 The eye and the Owl are both picto's from Egypt. While you correctly pointed out the Eye of Horus, the owl character at the bottom point of the sexagon is a "M" as it's often used in alphabetical translation. I don't know how much that information helps, however there could be a connection I'm missing.
I have a good mate who does stuff like this, it's kind of a high-concept art project with a deliberately ugly execution. they're deliberately cryptic to give an impression of depth. it's just visual obfuscation with an eye to resemble profundity (and it doxxed some politicians too just for extra edge). Weak sauce.
There was some guy on 4chan back in 2004 who was really into net art, he claimed to have made tons of ascii arts for scene groups back in the day. He also posted a bunch of similar sites to this one and it's exactly what you describe in general. Edgy art for the sake of being edgy. Some of the artists really do buy into the whole deep-art and think they are changing humanity (somehow) but they're not the norm.
Art is used for expression, communication, and discussion, among so many other things, discounting it as an "edgy teen" is the wrong direction to go, the fact you are talking about it means it is doing it's job, and high-concept art is incredibly intelligent and hard to do well, the ability to mimic a website that looks like a big government conspiracy is a new age form of the ability to paint a tree that looks like a real tree, or intense character work, it is meant to look real, and a government conspiracy website would be a pretty edgy affair. Honestly probs to every single "reddit/internet mystery", they're all usually fake but the artistic merit really can't be disputed
After re-visiting this video after 3 years the website has updated alot and here's what I've found: 1) if you click through the pictures, there's still themes of n^des and g○re but centered around mickey mouse? Along with the 50s-60s-ish. It's hard to describe. 2. There's always a gif in the background and I'm wondering if it's from a movie, I swear I've seen it before. 3. All the information I've seen so far, looks like a court case. 4. Not as many flashing lights but some of them still there
@@miaumeowsi'd say as long as you stay wary it'll be okay, maybe turn your audio off to avoid getting jumpscared and if it tries to download something cancel that. if you're just too scared i can relate.
The Mickey art is sort of similar to the original Dmitry Myaskysky work in ways except it’s obvious stable diffusion and a bit more aggressive seeming and some are almost cult or religious like. Have you been able to find the original home page from a few years back?
It’s more likely art students, programmers/coders, and psychology majors doing all that as a form of “expression”. One odd ball decided they couldn’t let go.. here we are.
The Most High Jesus Christ would concur with your thesis. I believe we WILL have to abort these devices to inherit the kingdom. It is written that in the last days knowledge will be increased and men will run to and fro. We are there.
I had a horrible obsession with LHOHQ back in around the time this was posted, I was in virtual school at the time and would spend HOURS going down rabbit holes in the website and watched many videos on it, I think I was so obsessed with it because I like very close to Milwaukee.
You and Fredrick Knudson are the closest I will ever get to listening to podcasts. I honestly love the insane things you find and make feature length videos on and will watch them multiple times and have them on in the background. Thanks so much for the quality and interesting content.
i see this as advanced conceptual art. it's taking the american zeitgeist of the 1990s-2010s and amplifying it to such an extent it becomes believable again. conspiracy is so engrained in american foreign policy and culture that it is no wonder a sarcastically, poorly constructed website that emulated the poorly constructed websites of the time that spouted conspiracy would gain so much traction as a serious and scary website.
oh man, nice work. wow. this could keep someone busy researching for a while, not specifically the site but all the other amazing info in this. dang this is my 3rd post, id better get on to internet comment etiquette, he would love this.
That's the vibe I get, probably hinting at elites involvement in sex trafficking and mind control. This is something my friends in San Francisco would have created.
As an art nerd it's a shame Jorge does not say more about the Dada aspect. While he touches on LHOOQ there is so much that LHOHQ references that is missing from this analysis. Both horses and smoking-pipes are like cult objects with Dada-and-friends, as is nudity and comedic or bizarre nudity and sexuality. The whole project has a Tristan Tzara play feel to it with its lure-in and then subversion of expectations, in this case with deep conspiracy. Including politics like this is Dada too. I remember several ridiculously similar "net-art" rabbit-hole sites from the 2000s and I wonder if any can be recovered. There was a bit of a 'neo-dadaist' wave in a lot of art and music but it was generally so irreverent that it didn't archive itself.
100% an online art instillation. An uncle of a friend did film work and lots of psychedelics with some of the people who formed this club. This was long before the website was created, he hadn’t heard of it before but for sure thought it wasn’t anything super deep and dangerous.
The website doesn't look like a government conspiracy, but rather more of an artistic parody on all government conspiracy theories. They put a lot of work into making it look real, in spite of the fact it's obviously fake. As for the person who found a piece of paper with their logo in Wisconsin, I have no reason to believe that person wasn't involved. They couldn't give a website like that a normal announcement because that would ruin the atmosphere. It had to feel like a cryptic website which people were never meant to find, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch for somebody to make intentionally-broken links with pictures of a piece of paper that never existed and give a story that makes it sound mysterious.
idk man im from milwaukee too and im almost positive i found the website from literally just a picture that had the url on a white backround and looked it up cuz it weirded me out. definitely dont remember any other way i wouldve found the site at 13 years old

Hey, I think you missed something, but maybe you did cover it and I wasn't paying attention. I went onto the website to check things out and when i clicked on the page that should have taken me to a video, I instead went to a page called "The Powell Memo". The background is of people (what i can only assume to be) rioting. There is a link in it that takes you to a new page called "De-Calculated Terror Monopoly" with clickable text that reads "Prepared Statement of Admiral Stansfield Turner, Director of Central Intelligence Mr. Chairman: In my letter to you of July 15, 1977, I reported our". There is also a gif on the Powell Memo site that takes you to a page of a woman with an Atari controller. Just commenting in case you didn't cover this.
They're anti-mainstream. Most people think of art to be a medium of peace. My thoughts are they're politically charging their art, possibly culturally weaponizing it.
LHOHQ is a reference to a piece of Dadaist art from the origins of the movement, where Marcel Duchamp scribbled a moustache on a postcard of the Mona Lisa and titled it "L.H.O.O.Q", which sounds like "elle a chaud au cul" which roughly translates to "she's DTF", a masterful shitpost. LHOHQ is connected to the Church of the Subgenius, which is a surrealist art movement. It's the L.H.O. HeadQuarters, or the Centre of Dadaism, basically. It is without a doubt run of the mill art student goofiness, Church of the Subgenius is worth diving into if you're not familiar.
One of my favorite parts of Nick's videos is his interesting pronunciation interpretations. When discussing Duchamp's "Dadaism", he goes with "duh-DAY-ism", instead of the proper pronunciation of "DAH-dah-ism". Again, not a complaint, as I genuinely find them entertaining, merely an observation.

I just get that vibe from looking at it and laughed a bunch of times which I normally don't do while watching your content.

Their motto was "If Jim Jones could get 800 people to drink cyanide, we can get 800 people to give us a dollar."
From what I remember they rented a building in Texas? and started their services which were actually "bring your own bottle/beer" affairs.

The film that the clip was taken from also had an appearance by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, himself a subgenius member.

He also posted a bunch of similar sites to this one and it's exactly what you describe in general.
Edgy art for the sake of being edgy.
Some of the artists really do buy into the whole deep-art and think they are changing humanity (somehow) but they're not the norm.
Sounds about right.

@@tanyat1896 None of this is more "messed up" than a typical art project, and there's literally no other reasonable explanation.
Yeah the one guy who couldn't hack it out of the bunch: still maintaining the Clockwork Orange.
I'm only a couple minutes in and I've officially decided that the internet was a mistake.
It’s truly wild... sometimes it’s straight up bizarre
Whoever created the internet had a death wish coming
i guess art was a mistake too because this is clearly all that this is
The Most High Jesus Christ would concur with your thesis. I believe we WILL have to abort these devices to inherit the kingdom. It is written that in the last days knowledge will be increased and men will run to and fro. We are there.
@@Manwichman whatever you say bro lmao
I had a horrible obsession with LHOHQ back in around the time this was posted, I was in virtual school at the time and would spend HOURS going down rabbit holes in the website and watched many videos on it, I think I was so obsessed with it because I like very close to Milwaukee.
You and Fredrick Knudson are the closest I will ever get to listening to podcasts.
I honestly love the insane things you find and make feature length videos on and will watch them multiple times and have them on in the background.
Thanks so much for the quality and interesting content.
Nexpo and Night Mind are worth checking out if you like this format
These guys and Nexpo 🙌🙌🙌
Barely Sociable too
Just watched a Nexpo video and definitely loving it.
Thanks for the suggestions guys 👍

Shrine it just gave me really bad anxiety. I feel like, a shiver down my spine
Yeah, it's most likely just an edgy art project.
Mr. E loves you
yeah, nah
Was the website made in 1993 or 1999?
Thats just all contemporary art
Extraordinary Being Series SIMP
i see this as advanced conceptual art. it's taking the american zeitgeist of the 1990s-2010s and amplifying it to such an extent it becomes believable again. conspiracy is so engrained in american foreign policy and culture that it is no wonder a sarcastically, poorly constructed website that emulated the poorly constructed websites of the time that spouted conspiracy would gain so much traction as a serious and scary website.
I feel pretty confident that it’s some obscure, avant-garde art project that was intended to disturb and confuse people who think too much about stuff
Great. That's me. I think too much about stuff. 🤦🏼😂
Yea of course. "Don't think too much. Nothing to see here."
I'd like an actual rabbit hole that obviously isn't an art project or an ARG.
A art project thats 1000+ pages long.. alr bro 😂
Yeah, stay blue pilled buddy.

Nah, not dangerous. Just a deliberately weird art project.
Probably
Agreed.
It had to feel like a cryptic website which people were never meant to find, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch for somebody to make intentionally-broken links with pictures of a piece of paper that never existed and give a story that makes it sound mysterious.
idk man im from milwaukee too and im almost positive i found the website from literally just a picture that had the url on a white backround and looked it up cuz it weirded me out. definitely dont remember any other way i wouldve found the site at 13 years old
This is nothing special. Just some random bs slapped together by wanna be artists.

Have y’all seen the interview with Derek Chauvins neighbors??
It was all a massive HOAX to produce EXACTLY the chaos we now have from these BLM RACIST fuckwads.
here’s an interview w/ Derek Chauvins' next door neighbors.
They NEVER once saw him in a police uniform...EVER.
No neighbors talked to him or even knew him since he never interacted. In fact they thought he was a Realtor.

Awesome
Or maybe King Crimson skipped through the video

They're anti-mainstream. Most people think of art to be a medium of peace. My thoughts are they're politically charging their art, possibly culturally weaponizing it.
I am very confused and the replies are not helping at all

LHOHQ is a reference to a piece of Dadaist art from the origins of the movement, where Marcel Duchamp scribbled a moustache on a postcard of the Mona Lisa and titled it "L.H.O.O.Q", which sounds like "elle a chaud au cul" which roughly translates to "she's DTF", a masterful shitpost.
LHOHQ is connected to the Church of the Subgenius, which is a surrealist art movement. It's the L.H.O. HeadQuarters, or the Centre of Dadaism, basically.
It is without a doubt run of the mill art student goofiness, Church of the Subgenius is worth diving into if you're not familiar.
it’s still cool, though.
whats dangerous about it? whenever you see someone post "hey guys look at this creepy website I found" its just them promoting their own cringe ARG
SHINJI GETS GROUNDED exactly
Yeah, I was confused at the “dangerous” descriptor too. I think Jorge means the page with the contact info and addresses of public officials.
Rose Kennedy it’s not dangerous for you, it’s dangerous for the people who’s locations they leaked. That’s bad :(
Probably meant the flashing lights
@A.C G Exactly
