    You need to talk with the RUclips channel Craft Computing. He recently reviewed a Synology and tried to compare it to home lab equipment and completely ignored the use case or the origins of synology. Yeah, the hardware isn't amazing, but that's not the point of it. Good review here

      For video surveillance, Synology is a poor solution and unreasonably expensive

    • @TayschrennSedai
      @TayschrennSedai Год назад +1

      Unsure on the ltz bit, and yes on the server side though Syno does have rack units that are not far off from lower end SANs (including HA nodes etc)
      Syno may be somewhat pricy but it's easily on par with Ubiquiti for surveillance, arguably a better overall purchase for an SMB as the unit can do more than just that. Small example would be that it comes with free licensing to backup gcloud and m365, as well as relatively decent performance backups of PCs and vmware/hyper-v all without additional licensing.

    Takes me back to the days I had a swann system, It came with software and pci cards that I just put in a pc and set it to record when motion was detected and it would email me and I could remote into the pc and watch the video.. The cams as had night vision.. I had 8 cams with only 2 pci 4 port cards.. and it was great. I set up my own network security.

    On the other side of the pond, so the entity list does not matter as much here. I find using a dedicated NVR with multiple NIC's allows you to configure one as a dedicated isolated LAN specifically for the cameras is best practice-negating the risk of back doors /exploits etc. from our friends in China. We typically use Tyco VideoEdge, wavestore X/V series at work, but I have a trusty old DS412+ working away with a mix of Hanwah, american dynamics and axis cameras for years, great piece of kit.

  • @XionEternum
    @XionEternum Год назад +2

    While probably not "federal agency" compliant; I used to hobby installing NightOwl kits that were only a few hundred USD. These things had local recording base stations and optional wireless cameras that were decent near lossless 1080p with night-vision. Remote-in was optional in the base station settings if you linked it to the network and enabled it. From there you could E2E encrypt it and view via IP access to the base station. Loved them. Hate all the "cheap" spyware surveillance systems these days, and I warn anyone planning on getting them.

    For home use I've got Duahua and some other strays to include Wyze with a bridge. Security is simple, the IP cams aren't allowed to talk past the firewall. I VPN in for remote viewing with BlueIris. The light gathering ability of the new stuff is amazing, even the cheapie Wyze cams that are now weatherproof work well!

    Been using Surveillance Station for a few years with a few different manufacturer cameras. I was really excited to see these cameras released. I was willing to pay a premium, and be locked in on the platform, for ease of use/management but I am not impressed with the quality of these TC/BC 500 cameras. I've installed four. Two needed to be replaced due to image distortion then one of the replacements died within a week of being installed. I don't have the time to be dealing with quality issues on a camera in this price point. On to something else...

    • @GR3YS0RG4N1CS
      @GR3YS0RG4N1CS Год назад

      Taiwan is China. Even Taiwan claims this. The difference is, the PRC doesn't claim to control Taiwan. They apply the "one government two systems" policy which allows the ROC to govern Taiwan.
      Taiwan on the other hand, claims that they are the legitimate rulers of all of mainland China and island of Taiwan.
      Of course, the US and western countries likes that because Taiwan is subservient to the US and the West while China is subservient to no one and therefore not part of the "rules based order" where US makes the rules and orders everyone else to follow.

    • @andymetzen
      @andymetzen Год назад +1

      @@GR3YS0RG4N1CS Consider that the relationship between the US and the UK is analogous to that of China and Taiwan. In 1776, the United States declared its independence from the UK, marking the culmination of a revolutionary war. Similarly, in 1949, China declared its independence from Taiwan, ending their civil war. In both instances, the larger, younger country-China and the United States-separated from an older, already independent island nation-Taiwan and the UK, respectively.
      The idea of a country already independent-such as the UK or Taiwan-declaring independence again is incongruous. Just as it is accepted that the UK doesn't need to declare independence from the USA, Taiwan should not need to declare independence from China, because both island nations were already recognized as independent entities when the younger countries separated. The scenario of the United States asserting that the UK belongs to it, or the idea of Taiwan "reunifying" with China, appears just as absurd to the Taiwanese. It's akin to the idea of the UK "reunifying" with the USA, a notion most would consider ridiculous.
      This parallelism extends beyond just the political, with linguistic similarities further supporting the analogy. The differences between Taiwanese Mandarin and Chinese Mandarin are reminiscent of the variances between British English and American English. In each case, a local speaker can readily identify whether someone is Chinese or Taiwanese, or British or American, by the initial utterances made.
      By examining these historical, political, and linguistic aspects, we gain a deeper truth, fostering a more comprehensive perspective.

    Call me a purist but an application aware NAS is a cheat. A NAS or a SAN should be dumb network storage - agnostic. If it knows about the data it's holding then it's not a true NAS or SAN, it's an application server (SQL, Email, File & print, etc.)
    So many NAS computers are movie servers or security camera servers and are therefore, not NAS appliances, in my opinion.
