    I worked in IT for 40 years. Thankfully never had anything like this happen. We did, however, have a constant battle with employees introducing viruses. People would straight up lie to you that they had not done something when, you can look at what they've done and see it.

      You'll love this. They came around our office with an antivirus program on a disk. I said, you aren't putting that in my pc, it might have a virus. They said don't be stupid it's an antivirus program. No I said. They infected 152 desktop computers with a virus including all the accounts department. The internet wasn't a thing then.

      It's familiar to H.P Lovecraft even if Lovecraft doesn't have anything to do with Cthulhu it's common for writers to include it in sequels. His novel Weird Tales is translated in countries as Cthulu Awakens. I can tell you that this was a H.P Lovecraft story since they go down to a person in such debt that they do anything to escape the claws of their nightmare and many times the main person is punished for reaching beyond what they weren't supposed to see. They speak about an ancient alien race commonly seen as fish people of giants and eventually the nightmares catches up and their fears become a reality.

  • @txbluesguy
    @txbluesguy 2 года назад +203

    Great concepts:
    1. The idea that summoning Cthulu would be buried in software.
    2. Excellent special effects
    3. The storyline and 'internal dialogue' of the main character help build the tension
    4. Love the ending
    My only complaint is you should have talked to someone who actually understands computers because the whole idea of building a supercomputer from spare parts and having it run Windows to seek out 'malware' just doesn't fly.

      This is pretty much the best overarching plot of The Laundry Files by Charles Stross. Magic is real, but rots your brain if you run it on your “wetware” brain. However, you can cast spells using a computer, so programmers end up being the modern day sorcerers. This unfortunately opens a door that should’ve remained closed.

    A former coworker... we had just had an hours long course in computer security and business security. Lots of great info about things like phishing and spearphishing.
    Later that same day, he took a phone call when it was just the two of us there. I listened to him go on for about 45 minutes about specific procedures in great detail.
    He hung up, I said "Who was that?"
    He looked at me and said.... "I don't know." He had not bothered to even ask who was asking him all those specific questions. Much less confirm they were who they said they were. In fact, proper procedure would have been for him to only tell the caller that this is above his paygrade, and he'll have our boss call him back.
    I was the new guy. How was it I knew more about security?
    I brought this up with the boss when he got back from lunch. He called around and confirmed that it was indeed someone with permission to talk about such things. But my coworker got a bit of a roast by the boss for doing what he did.

    Imagine if the Code was merely an AI, remnant of an ancient race, going from planet to planet simply trying to self repair, by harvesting and searching through the DNA for its source code fragments; The same ancient race being responsible for seeding the Universe, with life; The ultimate technocratic dream/nightmare.

    Interesting. The IT parts could be better, but the atmosphere, music, scenario, and mixing Cthulu with modern technology makes it unique, interesting and overall really good.

    I was a C programmer for the Brit Army back in the '70's mainly on satellite and security stuff, no huge problem back then. Fast Forward to the late '90's and early '10's as the group IT Manager of a multi national we bought PC's and removed the floppy Disk drives and just before I retired we were removing the USB ports too. We always had the most up to date Internet Internet protection software but even then we had to fight virus infections. We found one bloke trying to load stuff onto his PC via Bluetooth from his iPhone, luckily it wasn't cooperative, round about that time I decided I was to old and retired.

    "We live on a placid instance of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the Internet, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.
    The programmers, each straining in their own direction, have hitherto harmed us little;
    but some day the piecing together of dissociated code will open up such terrifying vistas of reality,
    and of our frightful position therein,
    that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly build into the peace and safety of a new dark web."
