The checkered past of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) catches up to him when he encounters Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a beautiful pirate that Jack once loved then left. Angelica forces him to accompany her to the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the notorious Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Accompanied by a zombie crew, the trio sets sail to find the legendary Fountain of Youth. However, Jack's rival, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), also seeks the fountain, as does a ship from Spain.

Blackbeard was one of if not the most infamous pirate in history. Edward "Blackbeard" Teach (1680-1718) was a legend in his own time. Born in England, he plundered ships traveling to and from the American colonies-as well as vessels in the Caribbean Sea. Although his reign of terror lasted only two years, he became one of the best-known sea robbers in all of history. *He's a real pirate, this film made him supernatural*

Blackbeard was a real pirate who was known for practicing witchcraft and voodoo. The sword he uses is the Sword of Triton.
Mermaids of legend are not how they were in The Little Mermaid. They were vicious and known for abducting sailors for food or to take them as mates. They can grow legs on land, but that's only so they can get back into the water; they're like whales in that sense.

Folklore about women (mostly) called selfies, they're seals in water but shed their skin on land and become women, dance on the beach at night and then put their skin back on in the morning and return to the sea. Mostly in those stories we're told about a human man who saw them, stole and hid one of the skins leaving the selfie it be unable to return to the sea, and so was then forced to marry that man since he's hidden her skin, usually ending though with their children (who in some versions of the stories have webbed hands and feet to show that they're tied to the sea as well) finding the skin and giving it to her so she escapes and leaves her husband and children behind. In the first version of the story I heard whenever she did come back it was only ever to visit her children, never to her husband.

In one of the trailers we see what happens (and this isn't in the deleted scenes) after Jack jumps off the fiery tower into mermaid infested water. He finds himself next to one of the ones that surrounded the boat, says 'Marina!', she stares at him, he says 'Please don't -' and then she slaps him across the face with an extremely tearful expression on her own face and swims off (can just hear her afterwards crying and saying to her fellow mermaids 'he promise...he said...' and the other mermaids consoling her 'he's not worth it'.

Blackbeard was a real pirate, minus all the magic and such. He was the most feared and famous pirate. He would tie cannon fuses in his beard and light them, the fuses burned slowly and caused lots of smoke so his face was surrounded by the smoke making him look terrifying. The sight of his Jolly Roger (pirate flag, each captain had their own personal flag) would make merchant ships surrender out of fear without a fight. Can’t look up the specifics on my phone right now but eventually his ship got raided by some British navy soldiers and during the fight he suffered multiple gunshot and sword wounds until they finally cut his head off. The navy captain returned to base with Blackbeards head tied and hanging to the front of the ship.

It's just that in this film, that amount of farce and delirium is inappropriate within the framework of one film and not the entire franchise. Captain Jack Sparrow dream is to sail the seas forever. He fear death. So he been trying multiple tries to become immortal. One way to enjoy the sea forever. Like in the first movie, he tries to become cursed like Barbossa so he can live forever. In 2nd and 3rd movies he tried to become the new captain of the Flying Dutchman to serve the sea for eternity. And in this movie he wanted the fountain of youth to gain eternal life.
But every time he so close to reach that goal there always something ruins his plans. Like if he would taking the coin he wouldnt be able to feel the taste of rum, food even the air of the sea and noone would want to be with him at night times.
When Will Turner got stabbed by Davy Jones, Jack had to let Will to stab Davy's heart to save Will's life. And in the 4th movie when Jack was about to drink the water of the fountain of youth, Angelica became wounded and poisoned so Jack had to save her.
So yeah Jack doesn't get what he truly want. All he ever wanted is his Black Pearl and sail to the sea forever.

I don't know if the real Blackbeard was ever involved in 'magic', but I do know that he suffered at some point from syphillus, so he started working to buy mercury because back then the only cure for syphillus was to have liquified mercury injected into the tip of your........
Apparently this was incredibly painful, but syphillus was even more painful.

2:49 In case you're wondering, yes, hangings were a public affair, and could often be used for entertainment. Either way a large crowd usually assembled to watch, and chances are at least half of the crowd would be cheering for the trapdoor to drop.
And yes, though we don't see it here but did see it in the third movie, children could be hanged as well.

This is a very underrated film.
I really loved the new direction the film went in, as well as the cinematography and look of this film. Especially considering it was filmed in Hawaii. I also loved the action sequences as well.
Is it the best of the series? No but I don’t think it deserves all the disdain it’s gotten.
PS I also love the acoustic version of the theme that plays during the credits.

The moral of Blackbeards s story and Angelicas own story is that unfortunately they were both too stubborn to understand there were things out of their control. In Blackbeards case, he didnt understand his time has come and was uncapable of repenting considering he proved himself to be an egotistical individual even in his last moments. Angelica started off as a sympathetic character, willing to sacrifice her own life to save her fathers. In the end, she never understood her father couldnt be saved. As Blackbeard was evil enough to sacrifice/kill her so he could go on living as a thief and a murderer. Tnat s the reason Jack abandoned her on that island. Despite the fact the he saved angelica, he knew she would kill him even though Blackbeard was a lost cause.

2:09 Little tip for storytelling, especially ones set around this time. you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes.
The two fisherman, their shoes are threadbare and worn, they're shoes that you wear to work, and that you work long hours with, and seem old not only because you work for long hours but because you can't always afford new shoes. They shuffle because they're for work not show and because they're simple anonymous fishermen
The kings shoes - those are boots. Those are well made, expensive, shiny, and clearly not designed to get dirty, and have been cleaned because he can afford to hire someone to clean his shoes. They made to make a noise when he enters because he is the king, when he enters everyone turns and bows to him because he is above them all.

Reason why the Spanish didn't get attacked by the mermaids? Weren't looking for the tear - because they had no intention of using the fountain.
Either no one on either of the two other crews thought of that or they just figured 'doesn't stop us in our mission'.
Reason why the Spanish didn't attack the British fleet? They knew they'd win easily having more men and more ships, so they figured there was no reason to fight.
The British thought there was a reason to fight and assumed the Spanish would attack, so they took their mind off sailing their ships to prepare for battle, and so fell behind on their timing.

From what I've heard, that kiss at the end was supposed to happen; Depp had other ideas. Also, I never cared for the love story between Jack and Angelica, and between Philip and Syrena. Blackbeard was a great villain, though.

44:34 greek fire, a secret mixture which very few ingredients are known (pine resin, naphtha, quicklime, calcium phosphide, sulfur, or niter) was used for the first time by byzantines aka Eastern Roman empire . What makes this weapons almost unstoppable is that the fire unleashed my this mixture couldn't be set off with water, instead, water light it up more. Even by jumping into the sea the cook wouldn't be safe

5:43 Perhaps unsurprisingly, many countries (including but not limited to England) hired pirates under the name of 'Privateers' to get treasure from other countries 'for the crown'. Most famous pirates who docked at the Pirate Republic of Nassau were former privateers now out of work so they decided to do what they'd been paid to do before (seeing as how they'd been trained to do nothing else) except this time they get to keep the money they stole and did so without a letter giving them permission to do so and naming them 'privateers'.

For a second, thought the header was referring to the fact that the story was based on an unrelated book about the supporting character, the mermaid and Blackbeard, and Disney shoehorned Jack and Barbossa into the story. (Which is why they don't really seem to be in the same scenes as where most of the action is going on.)
So, yeah, the movie's "Fake Sparrow" as much as Angelica is.

In a strange way I found the whole storyline with the Spanish almost funny. All that work by the British, getting ship and crew together, sailing out and facing so many dangers they weren't even prepared for, all for the sake of stopping a 'melancholy Spanish monarch, a catholic (!), gaining eternal life' and then it turns out it was all for nothing because the Spanish had no intention of using the fountain of youth, but to destroy it.
    All that fuss over nothing.....
And another reason why I feel that the British Empire in this franchise has a very bloated view of its worth and importance.
