This song is part of the band's Fear Series.
Witch Hunt was designated Part Three of Fear, but came out first (on 1981's Moving Pictures album).
Part Two, which came out second (on the Signals album) was The Weapon.
Part one, which came out third, was The Enemy Within, from 1984's Grace Under Pressure.
They added part four, Freeze, over a decade later. It appears on their Vapor Trails album.

In case you were unaware, both Alex and Geddy's parents were affected by WW2. In fact, Geddy's mother and father were both in Nazi concentration camps, survived and married when the war ended. So they are *VERY* serious about freedom, rights, civil rights, autonomy, personal agency, anti-war, and anything to do with humanity not creating more oppression, suffering and death.

These 3 guys even with out a single lyric can paint a picture of exactly what is before us… then you throw in the deepest of lyrics that if your truly listening will give you chills…
This song hits harder on the mentality of man in 2024 than it even did in 1980 when released

True today as it was in 1981, sadly. I thought we had made some progress, but sometimes it feels the pendulum is swinging back. “Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand.” I know too many people like that. Great reaction Dame. Cheers!

A song written over 40 years ago and absolutely relevant in 2024. Neil Peart wrote the fear trilogy, when asking himself the question of, How many of my daily decisions are based on fear? When you think about it, you'll scare yourself.

    • @Scottracine68
      @Scottracine68 Месяц назад

A little sad at the fact that it's actually more relevant now honestly. Seems like no one was listening to the warning that history will repeat itself if given the opportunity. We are still struggling to get past hate and divisions, within ourselves and our communities, no matter the struggle the "cause" needs resolution. The philosophy is sound but our execution as a society sucks!

It’s a little played song but so powerful. And so relevant. It’s not the times that are hard, it’s the fact that we are always just beasts at heart. It’s only knowledge and understanding the elevated us from being just animals that tear each other apart.

Rush never played wallflowers. They would never shrink from telling us what we needed to hear. That's why I loved them. Everything about them was amazing. From the lyrics to each of them as individual musicians, and even as humans, they're all exceptional. They are exceptional human beings. RIP Neil Peart.

RIP Neil.🤘🎸This song is part of the “Fear” series. The series spans multiple albums and consists of Witch Hunt from Moving Pictures (part3), The Weapon from Signals (part2), The Enemy Within from Grace Under Pressure (part1) and Freeze from Vapor Trails (part4).🤘🎸

You sort of got the message of the "Those who know what's best for us..." backwards. Neil Peart was sort of saying those words from the point of view of those who follow and/or agree with the hate-mongers. Spoken as if one were in the crowd at a KKK rally listening to the leader speak: "HE knows what's best for us! HE must save us from our critical thinking and tolerance of those unlike us! HE must save us from OURSELVES!" It's not wishful thinking that some leader will come along and save us from thinking those bad things, rather the exact opposite.
That said, your RUSH reactions are great. I always love seeing someone who totally "gets" them, both musically and lyrically. Keep up the good work.

Such a powerful song! That riff is 🔥🔥🔥
The crowd scene at the beginning were the guys from Rush and their recording crew yelling goofy things at each out in the middle of a cold winter night after a number of alcoholic beverages. LOL
The whole fear series is fantastic.
I suggest The weapon (Count Floyd intro) 1984 Presto tour.
I am also recommending Geddy Lee's new book My Effin Life. It is really well written and a very interesting read.
    Cheers

This song is beyond relevant any year but so damn true in 2024. Let's hope the citizens of the USA reject such hate in November. Rush did thus over 4 decades ago, yet another timeless song and a lyrical masterpiece by Neil Peart. This song needs a Billion views, everyone needs to see and hear it. Just more evidence on how great this band was.Enjoy! 💙

This is one deep piece. I'm sure you will find yourself listening to this again and again.
Many, many people will be drawn in by the musical complexities of this song and will miss the message. I'm glad you caught depth of the lyrics and understand just how impactful they are and can be.
As you continue to explore the Rush rabbit-hole, allow yourself to enjoy the entire "Fear" trilogy, which like so many things they do, is more than a trilogy (actually four songs).
Well done, young man. Well done!
Grace and peace be with you now and always.

Excellent reaction, DAME. I thought you'd like the song, but I hoped, and was sure, you'd know the real message - the subtext. You said it: "Only You, Can Save You." As always: Thank You, brother.

You did it right, lad… I remember being in your shoes the first time I heard it, and am more than a little disgusted that it’s more relevant now than when it was written. It’s ironic that the term witch-hunt is one of Mr. Dumbass’s favorite sayings, when you consider that this song was written about people just like him.
    Another great reaction…

This is such a powerful song, even today. I work in a bookstore, so Neil's lyrics about how some people find the books on bookstore shelves 'dangerous' and that these people feel they must 'save us from ourselves' especially resonate with me. Additionally, here in Iowa, there is a legislation attempting to remove books from school and public libraries. (I used to work at a public library, as well). I suggest checking out the live version of this song from Toronto in 1984.

This song is part of a 3 (well... 4) part epic titled 'Fear'. This song is actually Part III. Part I. Is 'The Enemy Within' on the 'Grace Under Pressure' album, and Part II. is 'The Weapon' from 'Signals'... Part IV. came many years later on Rush's 2002 album 'Vapor Trails', but I'm so used to this as a three parter that I still see it that way...
P.S.- I loved what you said in regards to the CONTENT of the Lyrics. Both of my all time favorite bands embraced a POSITIVE STANCE as Role-Models... the other band is the Beatles...

One thing I love about Rush's lyrics, is that they tend to sing about eternal truths, which makes their music timeless. But they also don't wallow in negativity. Most of their material is about the triumph and optimism of the human spirit. Not coincidentally, both Geddy and Alex's parents are immigrants from WW2 Poland and Yugoslavia under Nazi occupation. Geddy's parents were actually imprisoned in Auschwitz and it was nothing short of a miracle that they both managed to survive. 'Red Sector A' off of their Grace Under Pressure album is a tribute to Geddy's parents.
