My dog always goes for certain types of grass. She'll seek out patches where the blades are extra tall and thick and avoid most other areas. The thicker blades must taste better.
My cat tries to escape the house, solely to eat grass. And then once she gets back in. She proceeds to vomit it all up either on the floor or the bed. wtf
+MichelleAmpora That's probably because of to much tuna being consumed or at least the mercury that's inside the tuna. For some reason cat's know too much is toxic so they try to vomit it back up by eating things like grass.
My cats love to eat grass and they don't vomit nor are they ill. I guess it varies from pet to pet and situation to situation. Some cats and dogs probably just like to do it to do it and others do it for things like fiber and to aid in other things. Either way, let's just let them eat the grass and make sure they have access to it. And this way, no one's eating my homework. l=D
+Chlamydialight Yea my dog does that too. I think it does depend on the individual animal to a degree. My dog does seem to eat a lot of grass before he throws up. I think a decent amount do in fact make themselves throw up by eating a lot of grass. If they just eat a little, then that's normal, but if it's over a certain amount then it does seem to be for the purpose of trying to throw up , at least that seems to be the case with my dog at least.
Cats are obligate carnivores. Although I had a cat who stole waffles and donuts and ate them. He lived to the age of 20. I guess it helps to have something to live for.
Ticklishness is a response to foreign hands touching you in vulnerable places. It is believed that it developed to allow children to practice protecting themselves from said places, under arms, souls of feet, back of knee, neck etc. That is why many people grow out of being ticklish.

Before we made the oasis, the older cats were just laying around, getting fat, weren't interested in toys, etc, and I tried so many things. I had gotten just grass for them before, and they liked it, but it didn't change anything. I didn't think the oasis would change that, but it did. They have more energy, are more playful, and have lost a lot of weight. Cats may be carnivores, but it would seem that they need something from the plants, even when they don't eat them.
I think if you ask this question to National Geographics people, they will relate this case to their research on Jaguar, the big cat of the Amazon forest which also eat some specific plant and then suddenly go high, the effect of N,N- Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in that plant which also exist in human brain in the area of pineal gland.
I heard on a Veterinary Program on the local PBS TV channel 12 back in 1993 the reason(or one) reason why cats may eat grass occasionally. Felines are obligate carnivores. Feliformes can't digest anything other than meat, if they eat something else they throw it up. So cats will eat grass to throw up something bad that they ate. Canines are carnivores, but NOT obligate carnivores (so caniformes can eat berries, grass, etc). So unless they eat A LOT of grass, dogs won't throw up, its just extra roughage/fibre.
Both my labs preferred the wide blades grass that grew from one stalk. My sister's border collie mix has a preference with branches she picks up to chew on walks through forest preserves... She chooses one that she likes the taste of and carries it home to snack on later.
My dog ONLY eat grass when she feels nauseous or it really seems like that's the reason. She's a French bulldog, and has a tendency to get 'greedy' - she can and will swallow a chunk of meat and bone if she feels the cats get too close ;) - and that is where she will start making a sort of dry heaving sound and salivate and will search for grass - I usually let her out in our garden at this point and she will wander around, and eat grass until she vomits!! I have seen her eat grass ONLY when she has an upset stomach - never for any other reason! FYI de gets a really versatile diet, which contains raw and cooked meat and veggies, bones, raw and dried and BARF inspired kibble - and she has an all you can eat buffet 24/7 so she regulates her diet herself - and she is, according to our vet, one of the healthiest frenchies she's ever seen.... So while it might be true that some dogs do eat grass 'just cause' - I've seen my dog ( and know several others) who will only eat grass to induce vomiting.... explain that ;)
I used to eat grass myself.Lawn grass is too bitter though, grass with clover-like leaves are just a bit bitter but taste good. Biting on a foot-long stem of hay is also nice, but since I live in the city, I don't see much of that, and given the prevalence of insecticides etc, I don't eat grass any more (for the past 50 years or so...).
+Nelson Tomnet I've never been able to find google. I would google it, but that would lead me into a never ending cycle of misery and disappointment. I think it is easier to have someone else do the footwork. Trusting them to verify the information and distill the most important facts. It saves reading through hundreds of documents. Cross checking sources and analyzing information. At the end of the day it is a lot easier and more comforting to be hand fed the truth then to find out how much I am being lied to.
can you do an episode on foods humans can digest fine but dogs/cats can not? for example, the alternative sweetener xylitol which has been known to cause liver failure? it's in a lot of "diet" foods that people might assume are safe for share with dogs. there's also things like chocolate, grapes, etc.
What I found about alimentaion of cats and dogs is that they're both omnivors... NOW. I side on the scinetist who thinks they were carnivors but due to the relatively recent binding of men and cats adn dogs (binding ? I'm french and I'm having trouble finding a better word) they became omnivors. That sounds very logical to me (people try to give all sorts of food to their pets and before the invention of specialized food for pets a lot of pets could have been raised with not only carnivors alimentation) But... As you said there a lot more to learn about that.
Used to have a cat. There was a stray cat that would wander the neighborhood that we'd let in to feed now and then, but instead of going for the food dish it would go straight for our cat's litter box and eat all the poop out of it. The stray would never eat the cat food, only cat poop.
if I pick some grass and show it to my tabby cat, it's as if I've got half strength catnip. He loves the smell and starts purring instantly, and enjoys chasing the blade before chewing it. Seems he likes the taste as opposed to his brother who couldn't care less.
Cats are carnivores , dogs are Omnivores. Cats can't digest carbohydrates , if they eat carbs then they're going to have serious health problems in the long run and it also shortens their life ( cooked food as well ) . Cats who are on a raw meat diet (+supplements ) live longer and don't get health problems compared to those who r on a processed food , grain diet . For example if you put a cat on a vegan diet , they will get sick and die fast . But dogs are omnivores , they can digest carbohydrates and also they make their own taurine ( cats can't and need to get it from food ) , dogs can live on a vegan diet and on meat . There's a dog who lived to be 27 years old on a vegan diet so that proves that dogs are omnivores but cats aren't - they are carnivores . A little bit of fruit however isn't going to harm cats , it can be a little benefit if they take it like as a medicine .. for example cantaloupe and watermelon
I also may have read someplace that carnivores have sandpaper tongues (as anyone who has ever had a cat lick him or her would describe the feeling), while herbivores and omnivores have smooth tongues (like we humans and our dogs do).
There are fruits that dogs must avoid though: for instance, dogs cannot eat grapes (or raisins), because they have a toxin that affects them. I've also heard avocados are poisonous for dogs. Also, dogs should not eat fruit skin or seeds.
When my puppy eat a bunch of grass one time he had to go to the emergency vet. His stomach was extremely bloated and hard and he didn't want to move for 2 days. Luckily he's ok now and back to normal after his medication but it was odd since all the other dogs had done the same thing too but nothing bad has happened to them (???)
My zwölf cats are crazy for grass. Though they don't seem to care for fancy stuff you can buy, if I get them a handful of the lawn they practically climb up my jeans and rip it out of my hands.
When carnivores eat their prey ( usually plant eaters), they often eat the stomach and intestines first and get a lot of vitamins and fiber from the plant material in them. Yet we feed our carnivorous pets mostly on animal muscle, and even use the high meat content of a food as a selling point, which is absurd. We all know that dogs will eat all kinds of vegetables and fruits. My dog, Sandy, when I was growing up, loved raw carrots and apples. My cat, Blue, loved honey dew melon, popcorn and spaghetti So the kinds of food with added plant matter may be a lot better for our pets.
I let my cat go outside and she started eating the grass from the weeds growing around the rocks and so I was legit scared thanks for letting me know it's normal
When my dog Bruce eats grass I notice he usually has upset stomach or haven't had a bowel movement. I'll take him outside later in the day or next day he does his business and back to normal. I ve observed this with most of my dog over the decades.
Cats don't need fiber on their diet . Their digestive track is very short and the meat will come out the very same day (in a few hours ). What causes constipation in cats are grains . Grains cause other problems as well . So their stomach acid is very strong , their saliva is acidic and cats digestive track is very short . Carnivores animals intestine from 1.5 to 3 times body length , omnivore 3 times body length , herbivore 20 times body length and frugivore 9 times body length . Carnivores complete digestion is from 2 to 4 hours , omnivores complete digestion is from 6 to 10 hours and they both don't metabolize cellulose
My boyfriends dog eats grass when her stomach isn't feeling well. She will run around and search for it, eat a looot of it until she vomits and after that, her stomach tends to feel fine quite fast.
I always hear about carnivores eating vegetables and fruits. What about the other way around? Nobody talks about a herbivore eating meats. Can you guys do a segmenton that?
my dog only eats grass when she isn't feeling good. Her belly makes these sounds and she starts acting weird and wanting to go out desperately. She's a shiba inu, breed genetically closets to the wolf... they also say shiba inu's very much have a cat like personality.
I have noticed when one dog eats from a bunch of grass, they all go over and chow down on the same grass. I have wondered if it has a certain concentration of minerals or nutrients that they are lacking in their diet. Maybe it is just extra sweet like you have suggested?
Ive been taking my cat on walks for years and he has always loved eating grass. Its a must every time I take him on a walk but I make sure he does not eat to much since he does throw up every now and than plus idk if he's gonna eat some sort of bad grass or something
One more Prius commercial and I'm gonna go toss my iPad at the wall and put on a farmer's outfit to go live like the old days. WHATEVER I MUST DO TO GET AWAY FROM THAT PRIUS COMMERICAL!!!!
They say that dogs eat grass because it's supposed to help settle their stomachs, but it is true that they vomit afterwards. I have a yorkie and she eats grass, then about ten minutes later, she vomits. We do need more research though
Having a dog is like having a Very Active and hyper 6 year old That Cant Talk but Bark Loudly. While having a Cat is like having a young adult or Grown Adult That Does not talk but meows.
Speaking of digestion troubles. Why did one of my dogs used to fart, look at his butt, look around at me like, "Did you just hear something?,", then it hit him and he would then do a big overly dramatic "fuck that stinks" noise and play faint like a kid throwing a tantrum.
You mention something called the monotony effect. Could this cause a pet to puke on a irregular basis? *** In this house is a cat and a dog. They both eat the same food. Drink from the same bowls. And have a tendency to puke about once a month. They visited the vet recently and we discusses it with her. She stated that she couldn't see any obvious reasons for them to be puking. She also couldn't tell why the back half of the cat has a lot less fur then the front half. I know she chews it off. The vet couldn't find the evidence of a cause. All in all we are at a loss as to what might be the issues. Now for the possible contributing factors : * lazy caretakers, We do take care of them, yet are lazy about it. * we switch food roughly every bag. We have never stuck to one flavor or even brand of food. We are trying to give them a nutritional variety, and just variety in general. * The cat is ten years old * The dog is four years old Any help or paths of research would be appreciated.
My dog has allergies, and from time to time, she'll get these "swallow fits" where she starts swallowing over and over, and then she sorta panics, and goes outside to eat grass. Less than ten minutes later, she's fine. I've heard its because of sinus drainage, and dogs don't know how to get rid of it, so eating grass helps for some odd reason.
when I walk my cow he stops and eats grass, I don't know what's wrong with him.
***** thanks hah 😂

I hate it when my cow does that wtf
Jarom Sosa ikr and my cow if refusing to eat the beef chunks that I bought just for him

lol
makes me wish I could eat grass, too. oh well.
My two pug mixes do the same lol
+Melissa0774 or they are easier to eat, just like its hard to eat hair, but if it was thicker it would be easier i imagine.

My older doggy eats grass but doesn't like other veggies
Hit you’re not a good dog owner. They’re not like us they NEED meat

+MichelleAmpora That's probably because of to much tuna being consumed or at least the mercury that's inside the tuna. For some reason cat's know too much is toxic so they try to vomit it back up by eating things like grass.
Maybe try to give her cat grass. The plant (oats) might help their digestion.
YOU'RE CAT'S A TROLL!

Why are we ticklish?
Why do we get itchy?
Ticklishness is a response to foreign hands touching you in vulnerable places. It is believed that it developed to allow children to practice protecting themselves from said places, under arms, souls of feet, back of knee, neck etc. That is why many people grow out of being ticklish.
Tickle is a response to weak/sensitive joints or areas like the arm pit outer elbow joint, stomach, neck, behind the knee
Lewis Wright basically it is safety mechanism so that if some insect crawls above your at night, that ticket will help you notice it and you can remove it before it bites you and make you sick and all.
itchness is same, it itches at places we ade stung or something alegic is there...so we can wash whatever is there away or scratch it out..it can be insect sucking our blood or some other substance.
both are safety mechanisms

Yeah, but can you tell me why my cat SMOKES grass?
+watcherjohnny
I've found that pets usually take on habits and tendencies of there owners.
The question is do you mind it smoking? If so would it be worth changing your own habits to encourage the pet to change its.

Dog eats grass

Dog vomits crap
Trace is a fantastic host and I'm glad to see him continue to work.
We live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We take 3 of our 4 cats for walks in the late spring and summer (on a leash). Our oldest is almost 19, and she doesn't care for it. But we make up for it by having a little oasis in the corner of the living room. There are cat grasses, ferns, roses (with taped thorns), mint, etc. and a water fountain, with a big cat tree and some kitty beds on the floor. They absolutely love it. They mostly only eat the grass, but our youngest will nibble any plant, so we always make sure that the plants are non-toxic (there's a whole index of things that can be bad for dogs and cats at the ASPCA's website).

It,s because the cat,s prehistoric ancestors millions of years ago preyed on grass eating animals. So,they're just retracing what their ancestors did, only without the intermediary of another animal,s stomach.Since the cat,s animal isn,t really designed to digress the grass material, after a while it just vomits the grass up.
I meant the " cat,s stomach isn,t really designed to digress the grass material".
I guess that this reason might also possibly apply to dogs, since their ancestors probably also preyed on grass eating animals as well, friends.

What our body needs, it takes. Same with dogs...
The staple diet of our dogs and cats are rice mixed with some leftovers like most dogs and cats from the Philippines.

no, sometimes cats eats other specific plant after snack bite or ate after something toxic foods for neutralize.
When my dog Bruce eats grass I notice he usually has upset stomach or haven't had a bowel movement. I'll take him outside later in the day or next day he does his business and back to normal. I ve observed this with most of my dog over the decades.
The real question is why dont we? Is such an abundant food source and easy to grow for agriculture? Is is just not favorable for trade and selling?

My cat eats grass and then listens to Phish while watching a Cheech and Chong movie....Should i be worried?

Got four dogs. All eat grass occasionally and they all puke it back up all over my clean floor. My theory? Dogs are jerks. Big fluffy cute jerks!
Not only does my dog graze but she loves apples, blueberries, raspberries, sweet potatoes and other fruits and veggies.

my dog only eats grass when she isn't feeling good.
All in favor of shipping Trace and Amy upon seeing them in this video press LIKE!!
My bulldog has a very selective diet:
Anything that smells like food, any food, all food.

Grass is having Swedish flavour? 2:52 Interesting
They say that dogs eat grass because it's supposed to help settle their stomachs, but it is true that they vomit afterwards. I have a yorkie and she eats grass, then about ten minutes later, she vomits. We do need more research though
Well that's good to know, i thought my cat was broken.
My cat eats grass, and then barfs it up. It's like whats the point?
Having a dog is like having a Very Active and hyper 6 year old That Cant Talk but Bark Loudly. While having a Cat is like having a young adult or Grown Adult That Does not talk but meows.
Cellulose!
I heard that whilst cats do not have "sweet" receptors, they can taste glucose.
Canis mesomelus*
My dog loves fruit, apples, grapes, pears, peaches, Ect. Only if it's cut up though.
Speaking of digestion troubles.
Why did one of my dogs used to fart, look at his butt, look around at me like,
"Did you just hear something?,", then it hit him and he would then do a big overly dramatic "fuck that stinks" noise and play faint like a kid throwing a tantrum.
2:55 it tastes like green paprika (I know it from experience but it actually tastes good)
Amy I seen you on some documentaries on the TV. Movin up in the world aren't ya??
I got a bit of trivia for you all
Why am I still single
My dogs love fruits and veggies so every now and then i share some of mine with them :)
I grew up on a farm. And the dogs that we owned ate grass, but specific type of grass. So they are doing it to self medicate or get high?
You mention something called the monotony effect. Could this cause a pet to puke on a irregular basis?
***
In this house is a cat and a dog.
Now for the possible contributing factors :
* lazy caretakers, We do take care of them, yet are lazy about it.
* we switch food roughly every bag. We have never stuck to one flavor or even brand of food. We are trying to give them a nutritional variety, and just variety in general.
* The cat is ten years old
* The dog is four years old
Any help or paths of research would be appreciated.
