Really immersed you into the disturbing persona that was John Doe. Excellent mise-en-scene. The minute they stepped into the apartment, they were in John Doe's head
Mills should have been off the case the moment they found that photo of him... it was a clear indicator that he might be a potential target. He & his wife should've packed up and left town for a few weeks, or at least until the case was solved.
Maybe they just thought doe was interested in them following him and didn't really consider them targets probably what they thought until it was too late.
@Jonathan Birch Yeah, and his plan for the film was sabotaged at every turn by the studio. They'd already gone through two directors and something like four writers, they brought Fincher on and threw money at him and said "turn this sinking ship into something we can put on screen, for the love of god."
@@maloperverso8118 Well actually I don't remember what else 😅 I guess they should take clue when he let Mills live, then he announced that his plans had changed. I mean, it was kinda obvious, for a detective at least.
I love the musical ambience from 0:41 onward -- as if the detectives were walking through unhallowed ground. John Doe's apartment is a place reeking with obsession and misery.
I always remember certain films where people go into the homes of crazy people. There's this one Se7en, and some others I recall being deplorable are the trailer park home in Zodiac, the room for the killer in 8mm, the house for David Ferry in JFK, and then of course Buffalo Bill's basement...
Mills as a detective should have realized and remembered every interaction he had with the photographer, including the "M-I-L-L-S, f*ck off!" the second he saw his pict. He literally gave his death sentence to John Doe
In the first third of the film, both policemen investigate separately. Mills inspects some photos, while Sommerset reads some books. At the end of the second third of the film, both policemen do the exact same thing in Doe's apartment.

@3:12 I remember as soon I saw the photos soaking in the chemicals I was shocked from finally knowing they had him but didn’t even notice or think about it like Mills and Somerset, great scene btw
You’d think after seeing photos of himself developing in the bathtub Mills would have taken precautions and perhaps moved his wife somewhere safe as the killer was clearly interested in him 🤷🏻♂️
Well his character is brash and kinda stupid, besides he thought those photos were from the random journalist that he shooed out of the stairwell. So Im assuming he believed that the journo was the killer, not that he was being stalked. I could be wrong but those photos looked exactly like the time he yelled at that guy in the stairwell. Or at least the first picture was anyway.
I just realized we see the aftermath of many brutal murders in this movie but we never once SEE the killer show even a HINT of aggression besides running and shooting behind him. Can you even imagine Kevin committing these ultra violent crimes? 😂
@@vksasdgaming9472 I mean Spacey sells it well he did great. But they never show it for a reason, he would look out of place overpowering all those victims. Buffalo Bill actually looked like he could overpower and torture some people.

A masterpiece of set design.

Gabriel Idusogie Same thing with Nicholas Van Orton’s mansion in The Game. Fincher is a detail freak.
Yeah it didn’t feel cheap at all. It was creepy that everything was obviously used for ill intent yet it was all meticulously arranged and organized.

Half the places they visit in True Detective.
